The video always reminded me of a mash-up between Michael Jackson's "Scream" (1995) & TLC's "No Scrubs" (1999), the latter directed by Hype Williams. Love how futuristic the visual is. We need more of this type of creativity in today's scene.
We are brainwashed though because the videos are similar, the group placement, patch over eyes, etc. An this is just one example in one genre. It exists in all genres and sometimes they crossover without notice. Just sayin..
TrendziSco so are you suggesting that people made the trends for videos and music because if I remember it correctly people followed the trend of the videos just as they do today??
I don't think iconic is the right word here. But either way, I think that aside from people who liked this music at the time, it's largely been forgotten. Contrast that with early 90's rap and some r&b, which has proven to have more lasting power and is even enjoyed by people who were too young to listen to it at the time (or maybe not even born yet). Or 70's soul. Late 60's/70's rock, Motown, 80's pop, funk, etc. All still relevant today. In other words, early the 2000's rap and r&b sound will probably be forgotten after the people who listened to it at the time are gone.
Tia,Tamera, Tahj and the casts of their shows, Brandy and the rest of the Moesha cast, these guys, Kenan and Kel, Cousin Skeeter's cast all need together and make a movie or something because those were some fantastic, unforgettable times.
Singers Mila J and Miyoko (both older sisters of Jhene Aiko with Miyoko being Marques' girlfriend for over 19 years and signed to the same label: as well as Alexis Fields, ashar Jackson (Moesha)are in her as well as Brandy B from Love&Hip Hop
I don't hear it. And don't forget: the late MJ was himself influenced by the music from the 50's. I was 38 when this came out; there's for me, personally, a melodic theme that just smoothes my faul moods, when I have one. Can't explain it- don't care much for their other work either. It's something about THIS song. As said in another comment: the production is TIGHT. Incredible.
Like most videos from the 99s to the 2000s, this one has that millenial/Matrix/ end of the year/end of the decade/ end of the century/ end of the world FEEL You can see this in TLC, Nsync, Destiny's Child , Britney Spears, Backstreet Boys, Sisqo and countless others. This song popped in my head out of no where today. It brings back so many memories. Side note, I remember thinking Romeo wore that patch as an esthetic and didnt find out until recently that he had a really bad eye injury that Brandy caused.
I was 11 when this came out. I bought this album on a bootleg cassette from a man outside the grocery store and I listened to this song for hours and hours.

Lmao just like every 90´s video had the white background, random girl singin the chorus and muthafuckas jumpin all up in the air with hammer pants and shit lol
About the clip: is it the same director that did TLC's "No Scrubs"? The style looks the same. Very creative. The suits, the hats- love it. The way the bass kicks in again at approximatically 2,47 sec...wonderful.
Everything at this time had futuristic vibe. It's just the record labels competing and following a trend no different than today with every rapper rapping the same copy cat way.

Hulkitout what does brainwashing have to do with anything? During the 90's people were on the whole futuristic tip , and a Timbaland beat was a must .
TrendziSco so are you suggesting that people made the trends for videos and music because if I remember it correctly people followed the trend of the videos just as they do today??
All I want is for this sound to make a comeback. Even just for a short time. This late 90s early 00s millennium r&b pop sound was iconic.

Marvlus ray No Scrubs was released YEARS after Scream.
@Marcel T Yup like 2 years after - Scream (1997) and TLC's "No Scrubs" (1999).
What he was saying is that the No Scrubs video was released months before this one, not that it was released before Scream.
I dont think it was paying homage as much as ripping it off. Michael Jackson and Janet's video too.
