In the spring of 1968, I saw the Iron Butterfly 2 times at a 14+ teen club called "The Blue Law" in Carson CA. It was in a warehouse near the 110 Fwy and Torrance Blvd. Doug Ingle, Ron Bushy, Lee Doorman and Eric Braun were members at that point. They played songs from the first "Heavy" Album. They were really spectacular, with swirling light show and pyrotechnics. The venue was somewhat small with a small "stage". My buddy and I were 16 and 17, we sat on the floor about 20-25 feet near the band on stage. The warehouse was painted all black inside. Young folks sat on the floor everywhere. They could and paint with florescent paint anywhere they wanted. One time Steppenwolf sat right next to us on the floor watching the Butterfly, then played on stage.
It is astounding how a group of revolving door ,what?, occupants? visitors? pulled off fleeting moments of unity - even greatness - such as this effort - especially in such close proximity of each other on such a small stage. There is a video out - with a drunken girl getting on stage - at some biker bar - at the guys? band?... playing their last show. Yet, I just saw some video advertised as 2019 - with the biker bar spectacle being over a decade ago! Bad acid trip. Anyhow - This is a very concise and comprehensive briefing or updating on/of (an) everchanging group(s) - Iron "Butterflies" Butterfly.
Ball was a great album which I wish listened to constantly when it first came out. OK it sounds a little dated now but for the time it was just so innovative.
Agreed. The biggest misconception about I B was that it was a metal band, Doug Ingle made it crystal clear back then that that was not what they were about. As you allude to they more proto-progressive oriented. Would have been something to see what might have been if Atco hadn't worked them to death and instead gave them the time they needed to fully flesh out their ideas. Cheers!
They are still touring today with no original members as Ron Bushy passed away a few years ago but gave them his blessing to continue I believe. In 2000 I saw them at VetRock in Willow Groove, PA with Bushy and Lee Dorman and two replacements for the others. I enjoyed it immensely.
I had literally woke up with inagaddadavida stuck in my head and I listened to three live performances of the song today and now two hours ago ya post this. Freaky
The song is legendary, but I'm extremely skeptical of the 30 million sales figure. Yes, Wikipedia's article mentions 30 million, but 30 million would place it near the all-time top 10. It's not on lists of the top-selling albums I could find, and those lists were up to 50 albums long.

I may have served with Doug Ingle's son in the Navy 1988. He claimed to be and was vetted by one of our instructors who knew quite a bit about Iron Butteryfly. So I assumed it was true.
I remember hearing Captain Beyond in the seventies, the band was founded by former Deep Purple front man Rod Evens, somebody at school had thier debut album,it was good, and I remember looking everywhere for it and had a hard time finding it,but good as they were,Captain Beyond never quite made it into the made it into the main stream,I dont remember ever hearing about them touring.
Captain Beyond toured...from what I read (Circus mag), they were LOUD. My cousin saw CB at the Spectrum. Maybe as the opening act for Alice Cooper, 1972-73?
They played in El Paso when In A Gadda Da Vide was on the air, I worked at KELP as they sponsored the show. I hung with Eric Braun as we were the same age, 17
They had 4 really descent albums. The two they put out in 1975 were pretty bad. They had other stuff other than Inna gadda davita. Ball in my opinion was their best album.
NICE that they are getting some attention as to me {Gen X btw} they were GREAT ! Even the two 1975 LP's fronted by Eric Brauun. Those being Scorching Beauty and Sun and Steel. There is more to them than "Inagaddadavida" for sure good people.
I wonder, was the band named after the popular options strategy? Or was the options strategy named after the popular band. Since the band was formed before the CBOE, I am going to go with the latter.
Well ya didn't bassist mention Philip Taylor Kramer, He went on to work in aerospace and in February of 95 had talked to his wife in a weird phone call then disappeared. Sometime later his SUV I think Ford was found in the desert.
He came later in the ignored period that had no Doug Ingle ya see ? Just like how Thin Lizzy pretty much get's ignored except for Boys are Back in Town and Jailbreak so does The Mighty Butterfly...SADLY !
Ya since they mentioned all these other members how could they not mention the disappearance of Philip Kramer? Huge story. Although the two albums he appeared on weren't very good.
I'm going to go out on a limb here and say that if they would have limited the alcohol and drug use down to almost nothing, they would not have had to hire every musician alive just to fail. Just a guess. . .
@@Bigchet1223 he was in Captain Beyond however he left and went to Iron Butterfly shortly thereafter and before he went to Armageddon.. Armageddon was 1975 I'm just not sure what year he was in Iron Butterfly. Remember he also played drums for Johnny Winter.
He was never a member of Vanilla Fudge. Jeff Beck formed a group with two former of Vanilla Fudge Called Beck, Bogart and Appice. They only made one album.

Nice research on the photos/vids and presentation of a band that will always be a part of MUSIC history.

No way it sold 30m. They were not popular outside the U.S.
Worldwide sales are about 6 million tops.

Rod Evan's revenge on Deep Purple for giving him the boot in favour of Ian Gillan---"See, I got Iron Butterfly guys to play with me!"
