A Liquid That Pours Itself! The Self-Siphoning Fluid: Polyethylene Glycol

- In this video I showcase a really neat high-molecular weight polymer that can self-siphon and pour itself our of a beaker. The reason it can do this is because it can be made to have a very high molecular weight. The solution I used had a MW of 1,000,000. The solution is basically like a molecular sized bowl of string or beads that pull each other out of the beaker once the initial pour has started. Polythylene Glycol is also used as a laxative. It is very slippery feeling like mucus and once it is on your hand it is tough to get off!

According to OozingGoo, polyethylene glycol(AKA PEG) is what's used in making of water based mixture inside lava lamps :) Chlorinated wax flows in it. Speaking of which, it can be found in different forms depending on the volume.

Thanks for your effort, it helped me get a "real world" feel for polyethylene glycol. It's a fascinating substance with so many uses, can thicken or thin fluids, disperse or conglomerate, stick things together or lubricate. Crazy wonderful stuff.
Would be interesting to mix with feromagnetic particles to create ferofluid with this properties. Or use ferofluid nanofibers instead of nanoparticles to achieve similar effects as this have.

Add silica powder and it makes a damn near bullet proof Non-Newtonian fluid.
There are literally 100's of uses of PEG. This is what was in the paint balls early in the paint ball era. But then to make them cheaper, they switched to a oil based liquid filler. The polymers in the PEG made the balls rounder and truer. Now the balls can be odd shapes on cheaper ones. It all effects accuracy.

I would bet it is likely J-lube. Its a PEG powder mixed with 75% dextrin (prollly corn starch) as a dispersant (decreases-clumping). It is stirred in with water. Marketed for veterinarians but is used for bubble-making/etc...
