I'm 61 and have worked from home since the beginning of the pandemic. After having gone totally barefoot since this spring in the house and yard and only wearing flip flops to go out, as the weather cooled, I couldn't stand putting my old sneakers on. My feet literally felt squeezed in them because they had begun to revert to a healthy natural state. I had unknowingly begun my barefoot journey. I realized that my wide feet and high instep had suffered for years in conventional shoes.
I began learning about the barefoot movement and barefoot shoes and eventually discovered Dr. Emily and bought her book. I found Freet barefoot shoes that fit my wide high volume feet and transitioned to wearing them anytime I go outside in the cooler weather. I still go totally barefoot in the house throughout the year.
I also learned how to strengthen my feet and adapt them to the barefoot lifestyle. I walk on 2-3 miles of mixed surface trails everyday. I include balance walking, soft trails, and hills in my daily walk.
Over the last two months, I've added foot and leg strengthening and balancing exercises and stretches and Dr. Emily's exercises including short foot and one-footed balancing and core work. I can now balance on one foot and balance beam walk on 4x4 trail edge posts and walk over small boulders.
I'm learning from Dr. Emily's videos as well as others on RUclips who are engaged in the barefoot and natural strength movements. I'm reversing pronation and foot weakness that used to cause me to duck walk and am now walking straight and my feet and legs and hips have straightened. I love feeling the ground now. And my overall health has improved greatly.
As you suggested, I'm doing foot exercises and balancing and stretches all day and I give myself a foot massage and toe stretch before bed. And I'm wearing Injinji toe socks with my shoes to maximimize my toe freedom. I have mild bunions, but am doing my best to reverse them with exercises and toe separators. I can't wait to see where I am in 6 months.
When I started this journey at the beginning of the pandemic, I was very overweight, out of shape, and could hardly walk. I started just by walking and going barefoot in the summer. Now, I gleefully do my daily trail walks and exercises all year long and am loving the barefoot life and my feet and entire body are much happier. If I can do it, you can too!!!

I couldn't walk due to severe neuropathy in my feet. 10 doctors told me that there isn't anything that can be done. So as before I decided to listen to the pain and although at this point I've had 15 years of personal training experience and 8 of nutrition and wanting to become a rolfer so having a understanding of fascia. After my first gross lab disection everything became clear. I can now run 20 miles no neuropathy. I am a massage therapist and have applied this to my practice as well as an incredible protocol for hands. "Putting on socks is like taking the wind away from the trees" - Joshua Moore
