    Tired dogs are definitely good dogs, and just now, I've returned from a walk by the river, where of course, I got my rubber boots flooded by the dogs jumping around. BEFORE watching Stonnie's videos, I would have gotten annoyed, but NOT NOW, I embraced it :-)

    My comment is for your cameraman. George you did an excellent job-I could see everything your Dad was talking about - what an amazing reflex along with great training!
    My husband and I do not even have a dog yet!! We plan to get a wire haired fox terrier when I’m well again & when we retire. Of course we’ll have to finish & study all your videos first! Thank you for all you do for those of us who are all deficient in puppy knowledge. God bless you and your lovely family.

    Stonnie, I just discovered your channel by chance and I am glad I did. I am a lab lover and have really enjoyed your videos. You have such a calm demeanor that is wonderful to watch. Watching the way the dogs interact with you is as wonderful as how you interact with them. Very few people have the knack to relate with animals the way you do. I can see you are much more than just a dog trainer.

I'm working on making my young boxer/lab mix a well mannered girl and your help is SO appreciated! Thanks again!

    I would love to have a kayak like that! There are nice lakes here in Sweden to use them in.
    And ofc the dog has to go with me. My mission for this summer is for him to get use to the water. He is 1 year on June 21st.

    Hey Stonnie, love your videos I'm having a problem with my retriever I have done everything with your obedience program, he is very obedient. The dog is 6 months old and was retrieving everything I was throwing but now he won't do anything that involves retrieving. When I throw a bumper he goes to it looks at it and turns away from it and comes back to me and sits beside me. I try to do it again and he does nothing I tried force fetch when he was retrieving and now he doesn't want anything to do with it. I talked to some trainers around where I live and they're telling me to get a new dog. Is there anything you could suggest? Thank you

    Thanks for the video!!! My lab puppy loves to jump out and swim while we're out on the kayak. While this is okay since she's only about 40 lbs, I'm worried about her jumping out when she's full grown! I won't be able to pull her in. Any more recommendations? Should I do more of the initial in the shallow water acclimations? She never swims towards shore, just right around the kayak. Loved this video!!!!

    • @jessica6967
      @jessica6967 6 лет назад +1

      Court maybe allow her to jump from a dock for fun, so that she can still enjoy playing in the water, but also learn that kayak time is not swimming time. Try using treats at first and reward her for every time she makes the decision to remain in the kayak when you ask her to.

    Love your videos! Could you share your opinion on getting 2 pups from the same litter. The general consensus out there seems to be "Don't do it". I am an experienced dog owner and former groomer. I have 2 months off to devote to working with them. Would be brother and sister Goldendoodles. They will be spayed/neutered at 6 months of age. Would love to hear your thoughts and any tips you might have.

    Hey Stonnie! First of all I'd like to thank you for your videos. They're really informative and help me a lot.
    Two days ago I got an 8 week old Mali and I'm not sure how to make him stop biting. There are people who say distracting them with commands like sit and rewarding them with food is they way to achieve it. And there are people who say that being more firm and "punishing" the dog is more effective (such as saying loud "NO" and grabbing them by the back of their neck)
    What's your opinion on this topic?
    Thanks again and keep up the good work!

    • @jessica6967
      @jessica6967 6 лет назад +1

      Gorilla Fighting please don't use aversive method son a puppy! Malinois bite for their whole lives, puppies bite until their new teeth all come in. You can't teach them not to, only prevent it. If a puppy is biting, provide a teething toy. Still not working? Put then behind a dog gate so they can't chew on you or furniture, only their toys. Praise them for making the right decisions and help redirect unwanted behavior, by teaching a mutually exclusive behaviour eg. you dog can't bite you if they're in a stay on their place. When your puppy has all it's new teeth, you will need to find a professional trainer to do bitework/protection work with. Mals were bred to do this, they are high energy dogs and need HOURS of mental and physical stimulation per day. They also excel at tracking. It is a working breed and won't cope with being the average pet dog. A mal is much more demanding than say a gernan shepard or collie, which are also working dogs. If you don't get professional advice for a trainer thta works with this breed, your pup will develop behavioural problems. You local weekly dog training club is not sufficient. Stuff you can do yourself is socialisation, but you must be careful not to flood/over expose a pup. Always keep them below thresold/as soon as it's not a fun game you get the puppy back to a safer environment eg. if you take them to a fair to "people and dog watch" but the loud fair music spooks them, your puppy is not ready for that intense of an environment yet. Build up slowly. I'm sure it'll be very rewarding.

    • @jessica6967
      @jessica6967 6 лет назад

      Biting is natural for dogs and punishment is not a science-based dog training method. You will only produce an unconfident puppy. Redirect biting to teething toys and puppy safe bones and remove items you don't want chewed. Don't create bad habits by not allowing them to occur in the first place.

    • @deenkay236
      @deenkay236 6 лет назад

      Hello Jessica, thanks for your answer.
      Regarding the biting: I personally have no problem with the puppy biting. The breeder told me that I need to prevent this since he is going to bite other people, too. And this could be a problem. I don't know the exact term in English but the puppy needs to learn "bite inhibition" or "bite impediment"? I have several toys for biting/chewing as well as a chew bone and chewing sticks. But he still wants to bite everything and everybody he comes close to. What helped is making the little guy "tired". I'm taking him for a walk every 2-3 hours. I've heard and read that 5-10 minutes each time would be good at this age. And we stick to this. But today we went to a close-by park and I let him off leash in a fenced area and he played with me for like 15 minutes or more. Of course I didn't let him play for the whole duration. We had 2-3 breaks after short periods of "activity" where I put him on my lap or let him drink water. When we went home he was calmer and didn't feel the need to bite me or the couch/carpet/clothes/etc. But this is too much for a puppy, right? Or is it ok for us to stick to the 5-10 minutes each walk + one trip to the park per day where I can let him play a little bit longer?
      Regarding the rest: Yes, I am aware that Mals are so-called high drive dogs and that they need way more stimulation than other dogs. That's why I'm interested in IPO/AGI/OBI. Tbh I look forward to spend hours with my dog outside since I'm very active myself.

    Hey Stonnie...I've got a Belgian malinois who weighs in at 65lbs. He's a male and I feed him 3.5 cups twice a day and he's not to active as far as family pet goes. But he turns it on like a lightning bolt when ever I work him..should try feeding him more...his ribs show a little bit but he is muscular and about three years old..should I be worried or just let him be...? I would appreciate your opinion when you get some free time.

    What age should you introduce them to water

    • @jessica6967
      @jessica6967 6 лет назад +1

      rodencr I assume any time after vaccinations. You can buy life vests, so that they feel safer in the water. Try to get then to chose to go in themselves. Maybe try a dog friendly beach, so the other dogs there can act as mentors and the pup will be having fun. Let them leave when they want, but provide all of the rewards (praise/food/toys) at the water. If they are shy of the water, just reward them fot making baby steps, until they gain confidence. Forcing them in might get then accustomed to water, but the pup won't be as trusting of you and it would be a good opportunity to build a bond.

    • @digs1223
      @digs1223 6 лет назад

      So you think he'll struggle more to train dogs that are generally easier to train?

    • @jessica6967
      @jessica6967 6 лет назад

      Digs 1 I don't think those dogs are easier to train. Imo rotties are pretty laid back and pit bull varieties have a lot of energy. Thats a dog that is unmotivated and a dog that is easily distracted and getting into trouble.

    • @digs1223
      @digs1223 6 лет назад

      Bulldogs aren't easily distracted they're usually naturally very handler focused,they also have a lot of food and prey drive which makes them easy to train and Rottweilers are intelligent,stable and usually very food driven,again easy to train and very hard to go wrong with.
      I've trained quite a few of both breeds,give me the typical Rottweiler or bulldog over a nervy collie or shepherd any day.
