In this video, Steve Huston delves into the complexities of drawing the human eye, emphasizing the importance of integrating it within the broader structure of the face. He likens the eye to a component of a grander architectural framework, suggesting that without fitting it into the overall head structure, even the most beautifully drawn parts lose their coherence. Steve advocates for starting with big, simple shapes to establish the overall head before focusing on the eye. He introduces the concept of "box logic" to understand how light affects different planes of the face and uses this approach to explain how each part of the eye, including the lids and the eyeball, contributes to the eye's form and function. Through detailed explanations and comparisons to other body parts like the knee, Steve illustrates the layering and stepping back technique that helps create depth and realism in drawing. He emphasizes the importance of symmetry and construction lines in capturing the eye's essence, also acknowledging the natural asymmetry in human features. Huston's approach blends technical skill with an appreciation for the eye's aesthetic and expressive qualities, providing a comprehensive guide to drawing the eye within the context of the face's structure.

Does anyone know how to achieve that amazing speckled texture in many of Fechin’s portrait drawings? I can’t find a single resource anywhere explaining or hinting at it, and haven’t been able to successfully replicate it myself either.
My guess is charcoal, held in its side, on textured paper
