+Joe Cole she seems more concerned about her hair than about watching the films from the guy she´s interviewing. don´t get me wrong, no mysoginy here -they´ve just hired the wrong woman-; there´s nothing wrong with her fixing her hair. but, as a journalist, you can´t be fixing your hair and doing your nails if you didn´t put together the good questions first. END OF.
As an up and coming filmmaker, Spike Lee is doing more help than harm to Kickstarter and other filmmakers. I can't tell you how many times a film comes up short of their goal simply because the artist couldn't get enough people to back it. This exposes Kickstarter to the masses and hopefully gets people to help artists. Critics who say Lee is taking money from other artists don't understand how Kickstarter works. A person can donate to whatever project they want to.
She acted as if he personally came to her house BEGGING for a donation. Her cutting that man off before he can finish his every thought has me angry right now.
So let me get this straight. It's a problem when a famous director ask for funding from his audience, but it's not a problem when a famous director ask for LOANS from big companies such as Universal, Paramount, and Interscope? I totally understand his frustration, especially since she kept cutting him off. Spike Lee has been 'doing the right thing' for years. (pun intended)
She was rude, condescending and blatantly DISRESPECTFUL! The nerve! 😡. Would she ask the same question of Spielberg? Clearly not. They were trying to score points at Spike’s expense.
I don't know anything about the film he made, but seems to me his anger was justified. The very first words out of her mouth had the effect of derailing Spike's ongoing fundraising effort. She's sitting next to a legend and that's how she starts?
I just gained immense respect for Spike Lee. It's good to know someone with as big name recognition as him is sticking it to Hollywood and going directly to who matters- the consumers/ audience/ base.
I don't usually like Spike Lee as a director, with an exception of Malcolm X, Do the right thing, and the 25th hour, but this video gives me a much bigger respect towards him.
I'm not a Spike Lee film. But, if he wants contributions to make a film...why not??? Who cares if he has a lot of money! It's NOT A STUDIO FILM!! So he uses Kick Starter to get the contributions, SO WHAT???? I usually can't stand Spike Lee, but HE'S RIGHT HERE!!!
Exactly. In actuality this Kickstarter is a broader version of what Spike has had to do in his career. He got funds from family, friends and others to produce "She's Gotta Have It". Then years later he got funds from Oprah, Magic Johnson, Bill Cosby, Michael Jordan to name a few so he could complete "Malcolm X".
If you're passionate about something you can't let haters like this women belittle your goal with negativity. Keep pushing Spike, and make the greatest movie ever. I will support by buying the bluray.
Actually, I think that Kickstarter should be used to kickstart something. Spike Lee is very famous and, I'd say, quite much "kickstarted" already. I think that Mr Lee is a little abusing the system, but everybody does. Who am I to blame?
You cant play Spike Trish, he saw right through your BS. I Love It. Her body language at 1:10 and ESPECIALLY at 2:04 is PRICELESS!!! Spike is a media vet, he knows how the mind control apparatus of the media works to discourage certain projects and encourage others. Trish got owned.
Spike's been struggling to make all those movies for years because he won't make stupid stereotypical movies. Kickstarter is for people like him as much as the people who are just started out. He's established but he's still very independent from the corporate movie industry.
The thing here is Spike spends millions on Knicks tickets and has been in the game making since the mid 80s. He has reportedly spent over 10 million dollars on Knicks tickets in 3 decades. I have seen him on the floor since the early 90s screaming at Reggie Miller. I mean I wouldn't give Spike a dime!
Well when it's investors or a studio backing him they get part of the money made by the film launching in theaters and going to DVD. Doing this through kickstarter, means that he can keep all the profit from this movie. And now that he has a well known name backing this movie, which is his own. A ton a people will pay to watch it. And he will get 100% of the profit while not investing his own money into the project. That's the controversy.
The thing that concerns some people and I is that many of us are not getting enough backers on to our independent projects but people are quick to back a celebrity on their project. With some much money that they have they can fund their own projects and even back us independent artists but they are not. That's what the whole issue is now with kick starter and indiegogo
THANK YOU SPIKE! For telling it the way it REALLY is and for busting the bubble of those that assume they know what the industry is like. Also, thanks for your continuation in making movies!
Each film is a different project and something that needs to be kickstarted. No one is forcing people to donate. His fans or those who desire to see a certain film made will contribute. It's no different than giving to a cause you believe in.
Totally with Lee on this one, even though I find it him a bit abrasive. He was treated outrageously. Difficult to imagine a white guy getting treated like that.
It IS true what he says, about being Kickstarter before there was a Kickstarter. He raised money independently for his first couple of films; when Warner Bros. shut down "Malcolm X" midway through production, he went around and raised the rest of the moeny through donors and finished the film; and he financed "Get on the Bus" completely through 22 donors. This is nothing new to him. And, yes, he's not taking away from anyone on there. People won't know those people exist. But because he has a Kickstarter and he is famous, people come there, and THEN they may notice other little guys' Kickstarters. He's right, he's bringing people in.
The great thing about Kickstarter is that it takes the power away from the traditional funders of movies who tend to screw over directors big and small. In this case Spike Lee retains his power by going to the common person. I say, let him.
Honestly, I would hate to be in her position, but she did really underplay the man's directorial career. "Why are you on Kickstarter?" is a pretty limp question for an entertainment reporter to ask a celebrity in 2013. It's just a natural extension of what filmmakers have done for decades. I am not saying that I have never disagreed w/ Mr. Lee, but let's not express so much damn negativity about the man over nothing.
***** ***** the main point of the feud here, is that Spike Lee came on the show to discuss and promote HIS BRAND. Whether he was invited or not, the start of this clip is much like slander. Tell me you would not defend yourself in his shoes...
Alex Young You're right man, I think that people think celebrities are just supposed to sit there and allow someone to make them look bad. What she was doing was not journalism, she was trying to shape the viewer's opinion before they even got to watch the interview.
askchazzellis I thought maybe he got so offended because he dislikes white women. After all it's Spike Lee... Well, didn't bash on the guy though, but he hardly said anything
askchazzellis And he handled it... in the worst fucking way possible. He could've played it cool and just talked about his project and ignored the smearing in passing. It would've gotten people to pay attention to what the segment SHOULD'VE BEEN ABOUT in the first place. Instead, Spike got mad (which is gold for the studio), and now he looks bad to the public. Hey, if Louis CK can do it, so can he.
There actually was heavy criticism about the Veronica Mars and Zac Braff's Kickstarter projects. Whenever any famous Hollywood people try to do something on a crowd-funding service, it gets people annoyed. So it's not only Spike Lee who has this problem.
The truth is a lot of people cant stand to see a black american male do good for his self. If its not something hes doing that's mentally wrong its something hes doing physically wrong. I mean damn can we get a 10 year break.
While that lady was a bit "all knowing" when it came to speaking about Spike's kickstarter...I despise Spike Lee. He's a douche at best and a criminal at worst. Of course everyone forgets how he shared in tweeting an elderly couples address in the wake of the Trayvon shooting and forced them to leave their house because of death threats. The name in of itself should be enough evidence that Spike Lee does not need help. The lady was right in the fact that this mofo has more than enough money for his movie.
I mean, Spike Lee is a loudmouth, but I'm actually on this side. This chick is so loud and disrespectful. He had to yell here just to get his point across.
Just shows that you didn't listen to what he was saying. You just saw a Black face and automatically want him leave. But if you did listen, others in the entertainment industry THAT HAS MONEY have used Kickstarter to FUND WHAT THEY WANT and have received no backlash. And the other people? They happen to be white.
I'm on Spike's side on this one. He's not being egotistic in this interview at all. I found this to be a very interesting interview as he explained how the hollywood system has changed. I'm a fan of Spike's film but not of his often annoying public behavior. I respect the man for standing his ground and refuting the aggressive opening of the segment. Unfortunately, controversy and scandalous openings and unfair biased media coverage have become a norm for media at the expense of the guest where they are often portrayed as "guilty" or a "villain" of something sorts and left to defend themselves. (this is often disguised as backhanded compliments) Kudos to Spike! She had one point to make "Why go to Kickstarter?" and he explained himself logically and clearly,
A movie isn't an act of charity. They're a lot of hard work and they're made to be seen by people. Spike's making a film that'll be funded by the people that want it to exist. I see no contradiction in Spike using the money he's earned to live however he wants, while using other peoples money to make films. That's how it's always done, whether it's funded by a studio or your own audience. Since most films don't make money, funding his own film would be a total loss.
She started off the segment negatively with a bias, even before he spoke, and she expected him to let her getaway with it? Come on now. He put her in her place, and I loved it.
I thought what he said at the end was pretty funny. "Since 1989 I've given away 300k to students through the spike lee production fund." Wooooooooow... really? A whole 300k? So in the past 20 years he's given each kid that's gone through the Spike Lee Production Fund a couple of dollars? That's mighty generous of him. *rolls eyes*
Just to clarify, I said I don't care what Braff, etc is doing as a response to Lee using them as an example of other celebs raising money for films using Kickstarter. Meaning, I lump them all in together. Sorry if that wasn't clear for you. And while no one is obligated to fund these celebrity projects, it's just the audacity of those with means to ask for a handout. But hey- if you like it I love it. Just giving my metaphoric 2-cents, which is all Lee gets from me.
Independent filmmaker my ASS. What indie filmmaker begs for $30,000,000 to do a shitty remake of a classic film? Shane Carruth directed/wrote/produced/composed/shot/funded/etc. both Primer and Upstream Color. Primer, now one of the most well known indie films of the last decade cost $7,000. Upstream Color, a brilliant and beautiful film far better than any garbage Spike Lee has done is rumored to have had a budget well under $100,000. THAT is indie filmmaking. Not mansions in Beverly Hills with fountains and a fortune of $40,000,000+, not counting the money he got from Kickstarter.
Stop talking about film? Funny, I think I have more of a right to talk about film, considering I'm receiving a Bachelor's degree in film production/studies and I actually understand how the industry works and how cash flow within the film world works. I'm not toting my education, I'm just saying I know what I'm talking about. And in my honest opinion I think Upstream Color and Carruth are 10,000 buggering times better than Lee, the fraud. And Steven Soderbergh was the one who spearheaded the indie film burst in the 90s with "Sex, Lies, and Videotape," not Lee. Lee simply tagged along in Soderbergh's shadow, using the race card over and over again. I'm not denying that Malcom X and Do The Right Thing are great films, I'm denying Lee the right to call himself an indie filmmaker when he begs for money on Kickstarter to create a massive, bloated budget to make a film that should cost half of what his goal was set at, and then get a pathetic return on his failed film. Another thing, Lee is worth $40+ million, has a mansion in hollywood with a fucking fountain out front, and yet he begs for money because "putting my own money in my film is ludacris." He's a self-righteous, entitled bastard who's entire demeanor drips with "I'm Spike Lee, I'm fucking awesome, you should pay for my film because I'm awesome enough to give them to you. By the way, I'm just taking your money and putting out a shit film to make it look like I'm doing something. Bye now!" He used to fight "the man," now he IS "the man."
You do know he was only asking for $1.25 million dollars, right? And you mentioned "Sex, Lies, and Videotapes", a film that premiere at the same time as "Do The Right Thing" at the Cannes Film Festival in 1989, so I'm pretty sure Spike Lee and Steven Soderberg spearheaded this movement together. And Soderberg has publicly stated that he thinks "Do The Right Thing" was the better movie. One last thing; since you were so eager to mention your bachelor's degree in film, I think the number one lesson that any filmmaker with a camera and a sack of bananas has learned or been taught (or any film professor would teach) at any point in his life is this: NEVER Self-finance. It's not a good investment and it's too stressful on the filmmaker himself. So yeah, I think your argument is a bit misguided.
People like Bill Cosby, Oprah Winfrey, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Janet Jackson, Prince all contributed financially to the making of Malcolm X. So this is nothing new.
Do the right thing as a reporter and do not disrespect your guest. This is Spike Lee your talking to. That was a low blow intro. So a proper way to introduce as most others have been introduced in the past is one, talk about his accomplishments first and then dive into your questions that tear down his name. Give respect you get respect. Now you know better so you should do better. However it was all in the plan to get you some ratings..
people should try to think for a sec, the guy is basically trying to say the right thing here, there was no need for this unnecessary hate towards him, no one gave a damn about veronica mars on kickstarter
You got to defend your work, but I am not going to lie, when I saw Spike Lee doing a kickstarter, I did ask, "Why is someone like Spike Lee doing a kickstarter???"
Way to stand up for yourself, Spike. She didn't intend to give him a chance. She started her segment in a biased and unnecessary way that put Spike Lee down from the get-go.
The business community doesn't like this trend because it cuts the financial industry out of the film industry. This isn't the only area where the business community is trying to make crowd funding look bad.
as a reporter she did her job, but spike lost his cool and because of that he fked up lol. he could of said marketing to fan and people and on the side extra cash to finance his film.
Spike Lee should not have to raise funds for his projects. PERIOD. In any case, Kickstarter is a space for artists with an established base, much more so than for young start-up filmmakers or musicians whose kickstarter bids look more like lottery tickets than serious attempts to get work made.
Spike Lee is a prickly character.. almost like the Kanye of directors, but he's not as egotistical as Kanye, but not like Kanye in the sense that he doesn't demand to be loved the way Kanye does. I respect that about him. As a black man in Hollywood, he doesn't seek to live up to the stereotypical image of black people that Hollywood betrays, nor does he suck up to anyone.. He's just not always the most diplomatic guy.. but the black community needs that. There are plenty of yes men, plenty of good cops in Hollywood, he's the necessary bad cop. He survives on his intelligence and his enormous talent.
She was disrespectful, she wouldn't let him make his point.
The girl has no idea what he's talking about or the industry, she's gone by in life with her looks and now tries to act like an expert on television.
Who cares how she opens though. She also knows what she's talking about because she is on a gossip show
Andrew Quigley hahahahahaha alright, whatever you say.
+Andrew Quigley terrible counter point
+Owen Guy to your claim that she "knows what she's talking about because she's on a gossip show?" lol what?
+Joe Cole she seems more concerned about her hair than about watching the films from the guy she´s interviewing. don´t get me wrong, no mysoginy here -they´ve just hired the wrong woman-; there´s nothing wrong with her fixing her hair. but, as a journalist, you can´t be fixing your hair and doing your nails if you didn´t put together the good questions first. The guest is entitled to have an attitude. But the host is not entitled to interrupt constantly.
She's not used to men standing up to her

I think Spike Lee is occasionally a jerk, but his reaction was spot on. No one shat on the Veronica Mars kickstarter.
She acted as if he personally came to her house BEGGING for a donation. Her cutting that man off before he can finish his every thought has me angry right now.
this woman needs to let people speak, holy damn

He seems to defend himself with logic she seemed to be out to get him
Meno Yuno agreed
"Oldboy...is a studio film, this is an independent film...I AM AN INDEPENDENT FILMMAKER"
She was rude, condescending and blatantly DISRESPECTFUL! The nerve! 😡. Would she ask the same question of Spielberg? Clearly not. They were trying to score points at Spike’s expense.
I agree she was very rude.
Ya'll tried to play Spike Lee that was dirty, but he caught ya'll with your hands in the cookie jar with that B/S opening!!
Jamie Sanders right?
I pledged my $5 because of this video. He put that reporter right in her place. How do you have a guest on your show and introduce them that way?!
We're behind you Spike. We need another Spike Lee joint (classic)
Thanks Spike for recognizing and correcting the hate from the jump.
Spike's 100% right, media tried to paint him a villain.
King Jay He is a villain. And a jerk.
King Jay Being a villain generally requires a bit of intellect.....Acosta is less a villain than a fool, but regardless, he is a fuckin tool.
Because he's real and not fake.
I don't usually like Spike Lee as a director, with an exception of Malcolm X, Do the right thing, and the 25th hour, but this video gives me a much bigger respect towards him.
The moral of this story is ... you can't trust devils !

He should have slapped the bitch...!!!

I wonder how mad will they get when we really start spending our money with our own.
The MAN defined himself. That’s all. He got attacked and put it on check.
Exactly. In actuality this Kickstarter is a broader version of what Spike has had to do in his career. He got funds from family, friends and others to produce "She's Gotta Have It". You got that right.
Tell em' Lee! You put a lot on the map! You help your people! I support you!
If you're passionate about something you can't let haters like this women belittle your goal with negativity.
Keep pushing Spike, and make the greatest movie ever. I will support by buying the bluray.
Haha Spike owned her.. She was like a scolded school girl
Rex Banner Spike ey is a no talent loser who has lost his mind.
Dallas West you are outta your damn mind to say that Spike Lee lacks talent. Have you made any movies? Gtfoh!!!!!
The guy in the suit was trying to hold in his laughter
I'll pledge more to Spike's film for sticking up for himself like this.
Actually, I think that Kickstarter should be used to kickstart something. Spike Lee is very famous and, I'd say, quite much "kickstarted" already. I think that Mr Lee is a little abusing the system, but everybody does. Who am I to blame?

You go Spike! He definitely was Kickstarting before their was even a Kickstarter.
Truth.
I respect spike even more now than I did before. Get em Spike !

And thats WHY I LOVE SPIKE LEE :D
I mean, Spike Lee is a loudmouth, but I'm actually on this side. This chick is so loud and disrespectful. He had to yell here just to get his point across.
Wow, embarrassed for Lee that he can't gracefully respond to a question that the entire startup community has been asking.

This lady's hate just inspired me to go donate to his project! Currently at $1,125,139 and counting with six days to go. He will make it, no doubt!
He put Becky in her place! Go Spike👍👍👍

I think you are the only person on these comments who have sense. Thank you for that.
That lady is very ignorant and needs to educate herself more on how film production works before she speaks to legendary film director.
Kickstarter is the future, it's a way to bring people together to fund the things that we actually want.
She's just hating
She started off the segment negatively with a bias, even before he spoke, and she expected him to let her getaway with it? Come on now. He put her in her place, and I loved it.
Woah woah woah, people actually gave him money to film? Shouldn't the Kickstarter have been for him to stay away from a camera?
where did she say anything hateful ? 3:19
I won't watch Bloomberg, follow Bloomberg West, or consume any other Bloomberg products/services until that woman is fired.

Another thing, Lee is worth $40+ million, has a mansion in hollywood with a fucking fountain out front, and yet he begs for money because "putting my own money in my film is ludacris."
He's a self-righteous, entitled bastard who's entire demeanor drips with "I'm Spike Lee, I'm fucking awesome, you should pay for my film because I'm awesome enough to give them to you. By the way, I'm just taking your money and putting out a shit film to make it look like I'm doing something. Bye now!"
He used to fight "the man," now he IS "the man."
Wrong, he wasn't asking for that amount and you're fanboyism is showing.
People like Bill Cosby, Oprah Winfrey, Michael Jordan, Magic Johnson, Janet Jackson, Prince all contributed financially to the making of Malcolm X. So this is nothing new.
We're with you Spike!
Well said, Spike!
However it was all in the plan to get you some ratings..
they're acting like spike is stealing money. what is wrong with asking people who like your movies to invest in them?
wow spike did do the right thing tell em spike
By the way.....on Kickstarter....you cannot contribute to your own project. It is strictly forbidden and in the rules.
"I refute your opening!" lmaooooo
people should try to think for a sec, the guy is basically trying to say the right thing here, there was no need for this unnecessary hate towards him, no one gave a damn about veronica mars on kickstarter
Spike WHOOPED that A$$
You got to defend your work, but I am not going to lie, when I saw Spike Lee doing a kickstarter, I did ask, "Why is someone like Spike Lee doing a kickstarter???"
Wow, he could have made the same points being positive but chose to be negative
I dont think ive ever heard spike lee say anything positive lol
Can someone please explain the back story to this argument?
first of all...first of all...first of all...first of all...first of all...first of all...first of all... :-D I LOVE HIM :D
Way to stand up for yourself, Spike. She didn't intend to give him a chance. She started her segment in a biased and unnecessary way that put Spike Lee down from the get-go.
spike lees a boss
The business community doesn't like this trend because it cuts the financial industry out of the film industry. This isn't the only area where the business community is trying to make crowd funding look bad.
Spike, chill brother. She asked you a question. Answer it man.
Spike Lee Served Her! People who don't want to support him don't have to, this isn't for them.
as a reporter she did her job, but spike lost his cool and because of that he fked up lol. he could of said marketing to fan and people and on the side extra cash to finance his film.
Spike Lee should not have to raise funds for his projects. PERIOD. In any case, Kickstarter is a space for artists with an established base, much more so than for young start-up filmmakers or musicians whose kickstarter bids look more like lottery tickets than serious attempts to get work made.
A well balanced black man, chip on both shoulders
+djguy100 he had a point!
Thank you Spike for not sitting there and being a good Negro. You receive the respect you command.
