We are so excited to show you our new cabin. Building this was an absolute blast and we are so happy with how it has turned out (and so are mum and dad)! We really hope that you've enjoyed this build series! I think we've created quite a special place here and I'm so thankful for the opportunity to do this project. I'd like to say a massive thank-you to our partners in this video, Trade Tested and Palmako for helping to make this possible, and a huge thank-you to you for watching and supporting our channel! So to place in context for us here is upstate NY, USA. If we were to buy a cabin, already built with similar features let's say in the Foothills of this State you would probably spend upwards of $280- $330 thousand USD, which is insane. And that's for an already lived in cabin. To me clearly you've invested your time and money in all the right places. If your cabin was built here for that cost you've spent, I would consider that well invested, or "a steal" as we say here in the US. Well done! Proud of all you've accomplished over the years.

@@franescadiano I spend an immense amount of time on my 70 acres without plumbing. Beautiful outdoor on demand hot shower, portable compost toilet, foot pump for washing dishes, the list goes on. What’s uncomfortable for me is how people that cannot look outside the box, putting other people down for working hard on their dreams. I guess I don’t even understand why it’s anyone’s business. @@franescadiano would have spent a whole lot more money on the planning and consent from the local planning commission to get the plumbing and bathroom put in. Not as easy as just saying "put a bathroom, toilet, sink, etc in".
And, what's the point? Well, it's to spend more time with his parents and have a place for them to stay that is nearby when they want to visit. Not 3 hours away where they live.

As someone who has studied erosion, soil science, and terrestrial systems, I was not worried about where you built. Those roots are stabilizing the cliffs and they have been there for 100s of years. Then you mentioned rock layers. The only thing that will take out that cabin is some other natural disaster besides a landslide. I hope that NZ does not yet suffer the devastating forest fires they get in Australia or tornados as in the Midwest US, or hurricanes or cyclones, here’s hoping you are well away from the shores here. However, earth quakes are an issue, but I believe you are not building on a fault line. So here to a lovely cabin lasting a century or two if it is well maintained.

If you're looking for ideas for the 'outhouse' perhaps you could create a hybrid utility space that includes bathroom, kitchen, and potentially, laundry elements, set off to the side of the cabin. For your parents' convenience, this new structure could be "connected" to the existing via a timber bridge.

There are a couple of channels that document living in Dry Cabins in Alaska, and how they get around the water issues. The basic reasons are different - to do with the isolation of cabins and the impossibility of connecting to town water, plus the chances of the pipes bursting in the Alaskan winters. The workaround solutions are a bit of hard work, but do-able. Large water dispensers in the kitchen, toilet outhouses, etc. Most people seem to use workplace or gym facilities for daily showers, but they show that you can live in a dry cabin full time if you want to.

Your smile says it all, Bryce, it really does. I did laugh at your comment about not wanting to have them slide down the gully and that it was actually very safe. I am fortunate to have looked after my mum till she died and still have my 94 yo dad with us, and sharing these later years with our folks can be so special. I think an outdoor bathroom will be stunning and I figure initially, your folks will mostly be with you guys, sharing meals and the bathroom and most importantly, your company. Dont worry about any not so nice comments, not everyone understands how important it is to meet council approval and also, that this is a project that is built from a starting point of absolute love, and in stages, will become the most beautiful tree-change for them both. Im in Perth and I really believe tiny homes would be a way to tackle the huge housing crisis we have in Au. I rarely comment on your videos though I always love them but your love for your mum and dad reminded me of how fortunate some of us are to have amazing parents and to really love spending time together. ❤❤❤

Wow Bryce, had to watch twice, just to take in all the beauty. Love the dark kitchen and living room. I can imagine how all doors could be open in Summer, making it really feel super spacious, open and hear the wind through the trees and the birdsong. Great job and enjoy yourselves together with your parents. God bless and cheers from your Swiss fans 💞

If I were to assign one word to this whole project, it would be: Balance. I love the 4 peaked roof; it looks so balanced. I love how you balanced all that warm, 'cabin-y' wood with the sleek, contemporary, black furniture and electrics; pure elegance. Because of the forest backdrop, if I were to have that place, I probably wouldn't put much on the walls....maybe an almost invisible mount for a very special shell, something like that. It's HEAVEN!!!

I'm laughing reading the comments. First it was too close to the ravine and now no bathroom or running water from everyone. Did anyone not think your parents had any say in the building of this cabin meant for them? I am sure, very sure your parents will do just fine in their retirement home you built for them and I would have given up an inside bathroom in order to have more room in my bedroom so I could easily walk around the KING SIZE bed that looks so cozy!!! It's a very great thing you have the parents you do and not the ones in the comments that can not see a rose for what it is. Bravo!!! I am very sure your parents are so proud of you and all you and your wife have accomplished!!

I love it. ❤it is like living in a tree when you are on the balcony.
The unit addition can be built for the bath 🛀🏼 and loo somewhere else near the house, in wood why not with a small sauna or a Japanese bath cube 😊 See how Japanese do for the Spa for instance. They use stones, some wood, but also plants and they use the trees to decorate. It is opened with panels, etc, 😊
