    When I was 18, I was diagnosed with cancer. After an experience that made a PBS fundraising telethon seem fun and brief, I went in remission. But I had this idea that college had passed me by. I was 20 and I kind of was under this mistaken impression that if you didn't start the year after high school, then you missed it.
    I began Piedmont Virginia CC and was able to transfer to UVA in 3 semesters and I graduated with honors and even got into a great grad school.

    As a former CC student, it was the perfect experience for me at the time.

    Went to a CC when i needed a career change 10 yrs after graduating from a university. My teachers at the CC were so much mmore engaged and in touch with their field of study. It was golden. Thank you CC instructors!

    Interested in your take on the culture of academia at both. I've attended both and worked at a university (not teaching).
    My experience as a student fully aligns with what you are saying. There are aholes teaching at both, but far fewer at CC. They cared and were far more flexible than Uni profs.
    I guess the overall takeaway was that Uni profs expected uni to be your entire existence and CC profs recognized it as a part of your life, not the whole.

    My father was an AP US history teacher and recommended that all his students go to a CC and then transfer to a state school. The classes are smaller so you can still get individualized attention and you can save a lot of money.

    I'm in college to be a middle school teacher and honestly in the eventual future I would love to be a professor at a community College I love the environment of being in a college so much and teaching is something I hold so close to my heart. It is a matter of finding what I would want to teach in a college 😅

    100% agree. I started out in a community college where I had a sense of community, where professors were very active and involved with student clubs and would go out of their way to give us opportunities that would not be available to an R1.
    I transfered to an R1 for my BA and the only thing good there were the community college transfer kids I hung out with.
    For a background, I went to a community college because my mom couldn't afford to put me in extracurricular activities in high school or get me tutoring or classes for SAT. Also, it was confusing to figure out college admissions- we're immigrants and my mom only got an MBA in the US and the undergrad system is different than an MBA. My mom moved to the US in 2000 but I got here in 2005-8th grade. Secondly, my mom is a single mom who could have never afforded 4 years at a university-she had trouble affording rent to keep me in a good public high school, let alone afford 4 years of college.

    I do want to teach at a community college... I love teaching! However, this is more of something I want to do after I burn out chasing a fellowship position with my current occupation 🤔

    Thank you for posting this topic, but really thank you for your voice. One of your videos popped in my feed and I got good vibes from your thinking, approach and realness... all of it just refreshing. After seeing a second video I subscribed and now in the middle of a page binge of all of your videos. Great content! You inspire me to share my voice possibly on YT and to look into finally teaching officially as I have been doing it off-cuff and not apart of an institution. Again, thank you 😊

    My Dad made a career change back when I was in middle school. Worked as one of the Accoutants for the Capital. He decided to teach, started at a CC level and switched to a University by the time I was I was in high school. I'm in my 30s and no matter how I tried to stay away from teaching k-12, I ended up back at University. I did my first semester of teaching Collegiate in the Fall. My Dad keeps tossing out that I should just twach full time. But the CC seems like a good idea, but also as an Academic Advisor, those students on BOTH ends need help but won't ask. As the teacher they don't tell you, but as an Advisor they do.

    I’m 29 now and I wish I’d taken this advice when I graduated high school. I had an undiagnosed disability that caused me to drop out, but if I was at a CC I would have wasted SO much less money. One or two compassionate professors wouldn’t have gone amiss either.

    I think what you're saying is true of a lot of positions at a CC. I'm an Academic Advisor and SCO for veteran and military connected students at a CC. I knew when I left my job working for active duty military that I wanted to work at a CC because it is a place where the population needs a lot of support and I feel it's where I belong. I see people at the school not enjoy the work because of the "neediness" of the students. Like so much of education, it has to be your calling, you are not going to get rich off this job. But I make a good living doing something that fills my heart. I had taken a position in standardized testing for a couple years and I'll take fulfillment over money every day.

    I spent yrs in academia and have a
    PhD/my sister is an MFA and tenured at a CC: There are few CC jobs to be had, at least in the places people want to live. This isn't a sure thing. I wouldn't advise anyone to go this route without letting them know how many years of adjunct teaching will likely be involved before there is even a job to apply for! My sister did five yrs. I didn't even try because I have health problems and I need health insurance!
    If your current financial security is important to you, this isn't the route for you. Good luck, everyone!

    My local community college saved me when I had left a bad marriage. Thanks to the professors there, I was able to get a degree, two IT certificates and eventually land a great paying job with a fantastic company. I still pinch myself on the regular that I got this fortunate.
    A lot of community colleges also have trade schools if that's your interest.

    What are your thoughts on going to CC later in life? I have a diploma, but that's it, I've never looked into college, but my options right now are so limited that I'm considering CC or tradeschool, so I'd like a second thought from a teacher.

      Hi there! Perhaps I can answer your question. I went to community college at the tender age of 40, graduated at 42. I've now landed a great entry level position with a company who not only saw my worth a a human, but were impressed that I went back to school as an adult and showed willingness to learn.

    I’m thinking about doing this in my retirement. Public school teacher for 30 years with a masters degree should be able to get some part time for at a CC, right?

    I tried to get hired to teach full time at CC level and was told I was "a generalist", which was apparently a bad thing. They want people who are specialists.

    You get to TEACH w/o the pressure of research. I didn't attend Community College until I already had my teaching credential and graduate degree because I was an idiot. I completely missed out. I should have done my first 2 years at Community College... It's such high quality (I'm in Northern California) and the teaches are so INTERESTED in what they teach.
    I still went to very humble CSUs, and managed to have wonderful teachers, but I still think Community College is the best option and preach it to my high school students 🤍🐻❤️

    "At a therapeutic level""away from their parents"?? It might just be me but this guy comes off as a predator. He's ready to guide(groom) the next generation, well not kids who are well off or anything and definitely none of those pesky parents.

    • @drunk_penguin

      Are you insane? He is obviously talking about helping students that need help (i.e lower income with absent parents, adults like me who are returning from the military). At the university level the professors spend an insane amount of time dealing with entitled helicopter parents of spoiled entitled students. Why would you try to imply something so negative about a person who obviously has a passion for helping others.

    • @williamrobb143
      @williamrobb143 2 года назад

      @@drunk_penguin I'm perfectly sane. What's insane is a teacher playing therapist. There are resources in public universities for underprivileged people. I don't believe his interests are for the good of young people because he can't be as "free" in an environment with more accountability. Predators don't like supervision, opposing opinions(probably one of his greater fears), or accountability.

      Yes....as in "we don't have to deal with parents" and with smaller classes, we do tend to build eggnog rapport with out students to figuratively lend them our ear or shoulder sometimes. I work at a university but teach mostly Gen Eds and training courses, so I do get a lot that want to talk. I'm more approachable than their profs who have 200+ students

    • @TheRealSpeechProf

      @@williamrobb143 I can’t imagine what kind of a mind would come to that conclusion from this video. You are clearly dealing with something, so this is as far as I’m going to engage with you. Wishing you healing and I’m sorry you had to go through whatever you have gone through to be in such a mindset.

    • @williamrobb143
      @williamrobb143 2 года назад

      @@TheRealSpeechProf trying to gaslight me won't work, I called out what I see and explained how I came to the conclusion that I did. Now as for why I would look at a college professor with a suspicious eye, all you have to do is look at what is coming out of these institutions, it's not about education anymore and a "professor" whose job benefits include something not related to teaching is just more evidence.
