And explore Tommy’s Universe:
thetommywestphall.wordpress.c...
Fictional universes and crossovers have been around long before the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The Green Hornet radio show had a crossover with the Lone Ranger that kicked off the trend. In comics, the Marvel Universe started long before Stan Lee was at the helm.
But these crossovers have a problem: They can privilege business relationships ahead of storytelling immersion and really interesting universes. As the Tommy Westphall Universe shows, crossovers often become a map of business decisions rather than of integrated fictional stories, and that leads to worse stories.
This problem plagues the MCU as well. When Marvel engineers crossovers, they aren’t thinking about a universe transformed by superheroes - they just want more quips, explosions, and cash. Or at least that’s Edwards’s argument - do you think the MCU works?
Overrated is a series that takes a look at the things we all know - the books, the trends, and the ideas that have become iconic - and answers the question: “Why is this so famous"?

Oh my... Thats hilarious

Its not even controversial. The only people that dislike this franchise are either are against comic book movies, or DC fans.
There's no evidence to assume that people who dislike the movies either hate comic book movies or are DC fans.

There's like half of ONE good point....spread throughout the whole video.....probably. Idk I couldn't find it either. Playing devil's advocate here lol
Is not only there's isn't a good point... there's negative good points (which is different then bad points). The guy complain about the universe not feeling real and dealing with consequences of previous movies at the same time complaining the events of one movie affects the other. IT DOESN'T MALE SENSE.
The like ratio is obviously from the DC fans
This is how comics work too. Just because Batman goes to some planet with the JLA in one issue, it doesn't really effect the continuity in any of his solo books. You can pick up next weeks Detective Comics, and not have to explain how Batman got back from where-ever so fast, and you can just assume this is "some other time in the same universe."
It's also kind of the easiest way to do it in a medium that employs more than a writer, an artist, and an inker, like movies do. You can't just draw Chris Evens in something, you have to schedule him and pay him. Or... Agent Coulson can say he knows Captain America, and he taught him this neat trick, and everything is connected. *tada!*
I honestly thought they were going to bring up the lack of extras in a lot of scenes, making them feel kind of empty(i.e. CA:CW Airport Scene -- while amazing, no civies were saved). It's not a huge deal, but it's kind of a thing...
This tho, was emptier than the airport concourse.

@@jinpayne he references "continuity" which can be roughly defined as the flow of plots and character development over a time period graded upon how smoothly these events unfold, and how well they respect the rules of the universe they create. ikr lmao, they're basically making a video on how the connections between the films are weak in some aspects, which AFAIK is supposed to be the point since that way they can be watched independantly without needing to know too much about prior films. Ofc, there are some films that go against this, such as avengers or civil war, and maybe spiderman but even that had a sort of 'previously on' montage at the start

So this dude doesn't like crossovers and he thinks the movies are too popular.
Literally didn't explain why they "feel empty".
Swifty Unknown they’re completely soulless films, created not to entertain but to generate an income for the rich CEOs and filmmakers at the very top of the media chain
Like every movie ever. Movies are made to make money newsflash
TR3YW3Y - if they were so soulless then why is it’s fan base so massive and so loyal? The fact is that the movie is made by nerds who actually have a passion for marvel... sure upper management only cares about money, but the people actually crafting the movie actually care about the property they are working on... if you want to look at soulless movies then go watch any of the DC films LOL
Truth!!
the explanation for why they feel empty is because each crossover only creates the same thing on a larger scale and not a deeper world. in essence it is a cash grab to make the roster of characters larger. the characters themselves don't really matter so long as they have someone to fight. And because they have someone to fight, they sell merch.

I thought the argument was that it's empty and bad because they do crossovers for the sake of crossovers with no real meaning behind them other than to bring audiences together and make more money.
Either way they're so off base smh.
@@g0tst1ngs I think the main point is that he’s trying to make is that they don’t make crossovers a lot and when they do it’s either just a reference to another character just for Easter eggs which makes no sense because when they used ant man to help his point he said that they mentioned iron man for just a money grab which makes no sense because the whole plot revolves around preventing the pym particle technology from getting into the wrong hands including stark
The dude is claiming that the crossovers are financial and says solo movies don't feel like they're part of the universe. But his claims ignore ironman being in homecoming, falcon in ant-man, hulk in ragnarok, and so much more.

@@FreakieFan if they MCU is that bad what does that make the DCEU then ?
Always_ Swishing I agree
this entire video is basicly him saying that big universes are confusing and he prefers winking at other movies instead of uniting them in a universe.
The title schould be "cinematic universes don't work" instead of "Why the Marvel Cinematic Universe feels empty" because all the "problems" he said count for all big universes.
The only reason they added marvel in the title because it is the most populair and well known at this moment.
That and in the end he says he likes xmen a lot more then marvel saying a weak point that being in a xmen movie is more meaningfull then being in a marvel movie, which is just not true.
It's funny to me how:
1. This guy values having a connected superhero universe over a decent movie
2. The whole point of this video was proven wrong in less than two years, as infinity war, endgame and far from home revolve around the consequences of living in that universe
Also WandaVision and Falcon and Winter soldier deal with effects of endgame(the blip/snap)
Also, Antman and the Wasp already was dealing with events of the universe even before infinity war, scott was under arrest bc of Civil war
I feel disturbed.
@ra al Except in the movies they do try deepen the characters and make them related to each other somehow. I could argue that Captain America's existence lead to the birth of Hulk; Captain Marvel is inspiring the creation of Avengers; Thor met the Avengers because of Loki; Iron Man took his latest form because of Thanos (power supply inspired by the Tesseract) and Black Phanter (the nanotech suit); etc. They're not just mashing and mushing the characters to fit a storyline.
And The Eternals kinda deal with consequences of living in MCU. The emergence couldn’t have happened without the second snap
And now the cracks are starting to show
Yes. Everyone would be mad if Disney made StarVengers. Now you're just condescending.

People would be surprised, and outraged. Especially because Star Wars happened "A Long, Long Time Ago"

The only crossover that would make sense would be someone from the mcu meting an alien from a distant galaxy who mentioned the plot of Star Wars as something from the history of his galaxy.

I meant that it wouldn't make sense, that being a part of it, but yeah it would be a stupid business decision and it was a terrible argument for the people at Vox to come up with and somehow fail to realize the fault behind it.
I wouldn't mind seeing it as a comic book (Marvel actually did a crossover with the X-men and Star Trek a long time ago) but not as a movie.

@@swng314 That's a weak argument because there is no evidence to suggest Marvel doesn't care about anything but making money.
Easter eggs don't add content. . Seeing little shout outs in these movies has never been for narrative benefit. They are there simply for the type of fans that are looking for them. But if you want to look at effective cross over content, look at Iron Man 3. Tell me another movie you've seen where the events of a previous movie (outside of their solo franchise even) impacts the character at a severe level. The attack on New York in Avengers is brought up countless times in Iron Man 3, and you even see him experiencing PTSD in direct result of his experiences in that previous movie. That does something very important to the narrative. Something that this Vox article glossed over and instead focused on Bruce Banner's picture appearing in Spider-Man Homecoming. Its an extremely weak argument.

I'm a big Vox fan, but this was a mess and made no sense. There's a lot you can say about the MCU, but feeling empty is not what it does. Too bad you didn't really lay out a case for that in the video. Sure crossovers feel strained and the stakes in this universe aren't really that good, but that doesn't mean it feels empty, or is even overrated. It's impressive that you gave it that title, barely addressed that idea, and then had the self-delusion to explicitly say that you thought you addressed the clickbaitiness after not remotely addressing it. Poor work all around. Do better next time.

Just cuz they are crowded doesn't mean they arent empty.
flyingdics1 it’s a pretty well formatted video I’d say and it does make some notable points. It’s just that those points are completely opinionated. Why is it objectively better for a connected universe to tell a cohesive story? Why can’t it just include separate self contained stories and have allusions to other movies along the way? It’s not just a corporate decision, it’s something audiences love to see and filmmakers love to play with. Why is it necessary that being someone in this world alter our state of being? How is it empty to set the baseline of your world on the actual world? I’d say if anything that this is the most fleshed out universe in all of filmmaking thanks to the countless different perspectives given by the differently styled movies and shows that don’t all revolve around the same idea.

They even had to use time travel to fix the mess.
Yeah, right ? I really laughed when I heard him say that. And then I threw up a bit in my mouth.
Ya know, saying that doesn't really make it true. The X-Men movies make perfect sense, and they have far fewer continuity errors than the MCU. And a lot of the errors in the MCU are unforced errors, like when they screw up simple things like how long Tony Stark's been Iron Man. The bigger errors, like whether magic is actually magic or some form of advanced science, or whether the World Council has any kind of authority to launch nuclear missiles at an American city or why no one got pissed about that, are things they just don't give a damn about explaining. X-Men movies really have done a better job than the MCU in their worldbuilding.
I'm high and i still don't believe xmen is good
Brilliant retort. Your logic is unassailable.
I agree. Most of the younger audiences are interested in Marvel only because of what they see over in the internet, which then creates more internet posts and turns into a cycle. To me, these films are incredibly overrated and there isn't any other way around. Yes, I love the Dr. Strange films, but I'm not going to force myself to re-watch the spider-man movies that I didn't like at all just because at their release, literally everyone was making their advertisement instead of letting Marvel and Disney do that.
I love the darker style of humour that DC films have, but I am not going to let that be a personality trait of mine as some people do with marvel, or worse, I will not go on the internet and make their advertisement, rather than letting the DC team do it.

This video has kind of aged well as people have liked most of the recent MCU movies a lot less than the movies in Phase 3, for example: Thor Love and Thunder and Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness were both just average and that’s it. I thought Eternals was a mediocre mess and I don’t think a Black Widow movie was necessary and I don’t think it should have started phase 4, the movie should have been made many years before it actually came out, and as much as I enjoyed it, No Way Home kind of felt like fan service at times. The avengers (falcon, mainly) needed to be mentioned in Ant-Man because it became Scott’s tie into Civil War. Just one example of whoever wrote this script probably hasn’t watched much Marvel
I enjoyed endgame but I feel the movies have been going downhill. One or two films post endgame have been good but I don’t get excited for the movies anymore.
Well currently the MCU is feeling empty because ya know...

Guys chill, this video is a joke
I found that when he used literally "x men" to as the ideal universe for continuity
“You were ahead by a centureee”
I'm not Disliking this video because I'm offended by criticism towards the mcu, (because there's definitely valid issues that can and should be fixed), I'm Disliking it because you make such a bold claim and don't actually follow through on any of it and that just makes it seem like you made this for views.
Exactly
Same. And the comparison to the X-Men universe was just confusing. The X-Men movies... I mean some were good, but with the reboots and revisions, it doesn’t feel like a coherent universe the way the MCU does.
He did do this for views
Wow thank you, glad I’m not the only one who thought that
@@tekkara1548 are they real consequences though? If you trash an entire timeline where many of your major heroes die, then all that says is that anything bad that has or can happen can be undone. Logan is one of my favorite super hero films ever made, and even that doesn't have solidified place in the timeline.
I didn't dislike the video because it's criticizing the MCU, I disliked it because it's a terrible video.
Did you really need to spend HALF of the video explaining what a crossover is? HALF???
The other half of the video is talking about how most MCU films are individual stories that don't really share a continuity with the other MCU films, which is outright not true. Then you spent some time talking about how the MCU crossovers are not good without giving a SINGLE reason, and about how the X-Men films are better without giving a SINGLE reason AGAIN.
You didn't analyze the MCU films or gave any constructive criticism in any way. This was just for clickbait.
The Name Yeah Black Panther wouldn’t have gone the same way if it wasn’t for the events of civil war, there’s more examples but the short things is to say that the movies don’t have consequences is objectively wrong, there’s many themes you can see the impact of the past films. He just cherry picked and chose the Easter eggs to solely focus on not giving the complete picture.
@Ray Rivera well. After cilvil war the avengers broke up. And it subtle but a lot of characters are on the run after the sacovia accords
Vox next film: why phoenix saga will blow you away
And he didn't explain it well.
Thanks for this btw, now i don't need to watch the video lol.
Honestly, years ago this would've been a really uh controversial video but seeing how Marvel is doing right now, everyone would agree now, well most people would agree.
Feels like a rant for some reason without much logic.

Just came here from his video and boi oh boi he could have destroyed Vox even more...
Civil War: well known actors line up in front of a green screen and punch each other. Ant Man's biiiiig! Chris Evans and the dude with long hair team up to punch iron man together, and iron man gets punched to exhaustion. This was the movie that made me realize all these movies are garbage.

You can try reporting it

Why this video feels empty: it brings up no valid points and cares more about nitpicking the small details in the films rather than discussing their overall quality

their overall quality is mediocre at best though.

Remember 4 years ago when "the MCU isn't that great" was a controversial take?
No, it's still a controversial take. Phases 1-3 are all solid and generally agreed to be solid. It's just Phase 4 that's dropped the ball.
@@ElvenRaptor Dropped the ball is putting it lightly. I'd say it was way more of a controversial take then than it is now.
@@ZeroSmoke. But he was talking about the movies made during the MCU's prime. This video was made without Phase 4 even existing yet. Therefore, he's wrong within the context of the time this was made and in response to.
Title: Why the MCU feels EMPTY.
0:30 secs later: Half of these people could disappear and it would still be 148 TOO MANY CHARACTERS.
LMAO tripped over yourself.
If all a movie needed to feel "full" is more characters, then I'd agree with you. In this case, less would definitely be more. "Infinity War" had tons of characters in it, and almost none of them had anything to do. In spite of a decade of worldbuilding, they still built up to a giant crossover event that had nothing in it but people randomly running into each other and snarking each other. That's the "emptiness" of the MCU that he's talking about. Pay closer attention next time.
@@PaperbackWizard *hhhhhhhhrgggggggggnnnnnh*
I was expecting a good argument, got nothing. Just like Thor 2.
Ya, and Iron Man 3, and Ant-Man, and Ant-Man 2,and Black Panther, and Age of Ultron, and Thor 3,and Gaurdians of the Galaxy 2,And Captain America 1, ect
To be fair, I think Thor 3 and Black Panther are two of the better Marvel movies
+ThunderCleez66
Iron Man 3 isn't that bad, fight me!
dude i forgot there was a thor 2. that movie cant have been good cuz i've seen it and i dont remember anything. Ragnarök is the 3rd best marvel movie tho right after Logan and infinity war
ThunderCleez66 Iron Man 3, both Ant-man's and Age of Ultron have redeeming qualities about them, especially in the overall MCU. Thor 3, Black Panther, Captain America 1 and Gotg 2 are good, even if they weren't your cup of tea. Come at me.

basically this video: the mcu is a bad cinematic universe, because we ignored everything that makes it a good one.
...only it doesn’t feel empty, it feels full, interconnected, with an uncanny attention to detail, revealing large over arching stories that slowly develop in the background of fantastic episodic stories.

Oooooof
When you write 40 movies and put them all in the same universe it’s impossible to not have plot holes
I don’t care what people say. Ironman was the best MCU movie to date.
its the most important one anyway
For me it's The winter soldier
I'll fight you
Are you serious? Fox’s X-Men franchise is infamously known for having terrible continuity. They constantly jump ten years without any of the characters aging or progressing. There’s multiple iterations of certain characters in different films because Fox can’t keep track of who they use- For example, the Caliban we see in Apocalypse somehow is the same Caliban in Logan. And the fact that Colossus, and Juggernaut are so different in Deadpool from the way they were portrayed in X-3 it makes it difficult to believe it’s the same universe.
I was confused as well... they want the mcu be like the xmen universe? which has zero continuity ?
It isn't the same universe X-Men days of Future past retcon'd the X 3
I totally agree with you (and I love the X-Men). The continuity in the MCU is there to reward the viewer for watching the previous movies. Like he says in the video they are pretty pointless, but so is any other nod or reference in any other movie. Movies are meant to be fun.
BENJAMIN DEWOLFE
The scene in DOFP where everyone is alive after X-3 was retconned, they show the original Colossus. Yet the Colossus in Deadpool is clearly not the same, but it’s apparently in the same universe since they show the Apocalypse cast in Deadpool 2? They muddy the continuity after trying to fix it.
@@TerranceGreig that would be TERRIBLE and would have ruined everything. Mcu did well because they didn't do it that way
I didn’t really understand what point you were trying to convey here, Vox
This video was very informative and interesting but it just proved what it was trying to disprove and makes the MCU look deeper and better than ever. They are probably the most successful and entertaining movies of the past ten years and in a world where Star Wars, Lord of the Rings and practically every thing else has jumped the shark the MCU still delivers some incredible movies. Infinity War blew every one out of the water and I look forward to the next one. Yes ok there is some capitalism involved but does that mean the whole thing is just a giant money grab? No.
I was raking my brain trying to think of what their point was... and like hawkeye, there was none.
@@sebasrez hey don't be mean. Hawkeye has a point... He has a whole quiver filled with them
Oh boy. You just didn't imagine how empty and bad Marvel MCU is about to be after three years
Agreed.
The fact that they can't even get the simple history of a superhero movie universe right makes concerned about the fact that most of their videos are about recapping real world events.
Yup this is click bait,
He says that the Spiderman fight with the bank robbers is JUST merch. However he skipped over how the villain was made because of the aftermath of Avengers Assemble, the weapons those bank robbers use IN THAT FIGHT is a result of the alien tech they got from the invaders in Avengers Assemble, AND the actions of Spiderman happen because of his experience in Civil War (while also wearing a suit made by Tony Stark)
SomeDudeOtaku not to mention tony stark’s mentorship relationship with peter throughout the WHOLE MOVIE
Irony is caching me so hard on this comments
@@brasilgamer4041 what irony? That this guy hides evidence from his video that goes against what he is actually saying, so that his argument is more convincing? I agree completely that this is total click bait. Waste of time.
I don't know what I'm supposed to watching.
Title says why the mcu feels empty.
But then it's about how the mcu is overrated.
Then it's about the Tommy westphall universe.
Then it's about crossovers and their reason for being.
None of which explains why the mcu feels empty.
It's ok to say you didn't like the films. You don't have to pretend it's because of some pseudo-intellectual reason.
I don't think you listened to it
Exactly!
I dont think if you even watch the whole video
Even if you watch the video it’s wrong, the mcu rewards viewers who follow plot lines, when ant man brings up the avengers it makes sense, but to people who only loosely watch the movies it won’t, to them it will feel forced. To truly appreciate the mcu you have to watch the movies and a couple shows and make a mental note of things that seem important, but people don’t want to catch up on 20 movies so they just watch a few and think the universe feels empty, because they don’t get it. Everyone of us who grew up with the movies get them and they’re a part of our lives honestly, if you don’t get it you simply won’t until you make the effort to.
