    Back in 2004 I was living in Germany with my wife and daughter. We didn't own a car but rented when we needed one. One day they didn't have the usual econobox I rented and substituted a brand new Touareg V10. I didn't even know what a Touareg was. It looked to be a very large SUV, which at least would give us a comfortable ride for our long drive. I let my wife drive it and she liked to go fast on the autobahn, when conditions permitted. So I fell asleep in the front passenger seat. When I work up I saw the speedometer at over 220 km/hr. I said to my wife: "What the hell?!" as we passed high end Benzes and BMWs whose drivers looked at us in astonishment. I finally told my wife that she needed to pull off since I needed to see what was under the hood. Plus I needed to drive this thing. I did and it was amazing how smooth and fast it was. When I came back home to the US I almost bought one. But the VW dealer said that they were difficult to get serviced.

      Glad to see, that I'm not the only one who got triggered because of that. 😂 While the open dash box doesn't bother me too much, the way he's holding on the shifter really bugs me off. What's even the point of that? Like, are you really going to manually change gears on fully automatic gearbox while driving? 😂
      I thought the only thing you'll need to do, is put it into "D" and then just forget about the shifter.

    That engine is pretty healthy doing these times at 354.000km on the odometer. Mine sits at 220.000km and is currently struggling above 180km/h, maybe because of the DPF being clogged and the ecu limiting power. Looking into that but aside from that with 500kg payload and 3/4 of a tank I did a 8s flat from 0-100km/h which is plenty quick for me. The dry weight of mine is 2680kg, so I'm happy with the numbers. If I want to be quicker, I get in my RS6 since I did not buy a V10 Touareg to go racing.

      I'm commenting on the "blindingly fast" section: It's a V10 in a brick car that is not intended to do these speeds. In a sedan, it would have been a different story, however, looking at the 100-200 times, I timed it at around 24 sec which is not blindingly fast. It's just OK and expected for a 750NM engine, OH .. a V10 (a 2.0 NAgas engine was also performing much better than this), however, the 2.0 couldn't pull airplanes.

I had to take it for a spin on a highway every 2 weeks to burn all the soot in the DPF since I drove it mainly in city. I ignored everyone who said it was a bad idea and I should buy some boring Toyota and I'm glad I did since I had no issues with my A5 - just have to take it to a highway every week or two to regenerate the DPF
      Big six cylinder diesel for city? But why? Easy - first I love the design of the first gen A5 and this is probably the only realiable engine in it (and the thirsty V8 gasoline) and second - the torque - I just love how it pushes me into the seat.

      The lights that were flashing in the dash in this Touareg have nothing to do with the engine. They are for other purposes. The little yellow engine light on the side is illuminated but that light merely has to do with emissions. It doesn't automatically indicate a problem with the engine. If this light flashes however, the smart thing to do is to immediately pull over, shut the car off, and get it towed to a workshop. But this light never "flashed" in this Touareg. ("flashes" means blinking on and off. If it is continuously on then it doesn't count as "flashing".)

Но.. с того мотора можно легко нашить сил 360, а если еще надуть чуток, то 400+... это так.. не влезая в железо. И поедет он реальных 250-260 (по спидометру 280)

    • @JasbirSingh-zj1fg
      @JasbirSingh-zj1fg 3 года назад +2

      Yes, you can get fairly good mileage despite going that fast. Remember that it has a diesel engine. Diesels can easily tolerate high loads without getting too inefficient. However, if driven normally (rather than aggressively or at autobahn speeds) the fuel mileage is much higher.
      IMO in North America it is wise to get a V10 Touareg only if it is going to be used for towing fairly often. Otherwise one should get the V8 or V6 version.

      Correct. I bought an E38 740d with a 3.9 V8 diesel for the sole purpose of going very fast between cities a lot. The fuel consumption is alright even at 200km/h, maintaining that speed requires only 11liters per 100km. Same priciple applies here, but scaled up a bit. The V10 Touareg weights over 2.6 tons. Also the AWD and a shed like shape doesn't help the economy.
