In this video I go over the compass calibration procedure of the Phantom 2. I noticed a video on this was not readily available online and want to show just how it is done with a few tips for a successful calibration.

Thanks buddy! finally, finally, a video that makes this process easy to understand.
I've seen people almost doing gymnastics trying to calibrate their phantoms and not providing clarity as to when and (properly) how.
Cheers!
Thanks so much for creating this video. The Phantom 2 is a remarkable gadget and a true work of genius, but DJI's manuals and instruction on how to run the thing is abysmal.
Thanks again!
Thanks. The best tutorial I have found on compass calibration.
Skip to 1:35 What you need to know starts there. Thanks for the video, very helpful.
+Ted Mackel the other tips are very important if you want the procedure to be done right.
Certainly but it can be handled in less than 1:35.
Ted Mackel
Yes I agree! Maybe like 1 second 🙄😜
Hands down EXCELLENT tutorial. Straight, easy and to the point. Subscribed.

Thanks for the tips! I've seen other calibrating videos where the demonstrator holds the Phantom by the landing gear and turns his body in a complete 360 instead of turning the Phantom around and around and it worked just as well. Just food for thought. Thanks again!
Tim Sembach I too have but I like this method better personally.
Tim Sembach I think the turning on the spot the way he does is better just because in theory it should give a more accurate calibration point on the compass. The otherway works but the more accurate the better with these things.
when i do the first turn it goes green, when I do the second turn when puttin the dron sideways it never goes green, it always flashes red. any suggestions?
Straight forward and easy to understand. Thanks...
Excellent video. My dumba** was inside when i was trying to calibrate. Once I went outside, I was golden.
Great demonstration and very helpful!
I just opened my vision 2 today and I can't get the compass calibration to work. I've done this in 3 locations in open fields. After the lights turn from yellow to green when i complete both rotations it slowly blinks green four times followed by a burst of red flashing, then repeats. I don't see this specific pattern in the reference guide. No matter where and how often i do the calibration this happens. Is there something wrong with my phantom or am I just not doing it right? I even gave it a low altitude close range test flight and it seems to work fine. However, even when it flies it has the four slow green flashes followed by the burst of red. What's going on?
If you just opened it I would contact dji sounds faulty to me
That's what I was thinking... I also dug deeper into the manual and I'm thinking it might have to do with being in a restricted altitude flight zone. I live in a large city with a major airport downtown and a military base. I will try again outside these restricted zones and see if it goes away. If it doesn't, then it def has a problem
Interesting thought but I would assume trhe calibration would still take though.
Just to follow up, first time taking it outside the restricted flight zone and all green! No flashing red. I think it's just the altitude restricted warning. A bit of a confusing sequence of lights.
Good to hear. Sounds like they need to be packaging new cards for the error lights.
Hei.I bouth Dji Phantom vision+ and drive it today fore first time. I callibrate it and had 2 green light like on Your video. Fantastic to drive. I was not sure about callibrateing and se manual now and look at Your video. Thanks Your video was helpfull fore me. Nice drone this Phantom.
***** Yes I just bought one too.
Hi...i have a question ,i have a dji phantom 1st version my problem is it wont stable to fly if i flew it ,it wont stay it and it look the gps not working what iam gonna do..thanks
DRAKE A. You have to have that gps lock, I know I tried it without it and didnt seem stable either. Yours never goes to blinking green gps lock?
Thank you so much, this has helped me understand , top man.
Thumbs up for you my friend and thanks for taking the time to upload this video.
Sincerely
JF ( UK )
naybobdenod No problem.
The manual says clockwise, why do you recommend counter clockwise?
Counter clockwise seems to work best every time where as clockwise seems to have issues. Check other videos out there they do the same.
you could have saved us the first 2 minutes ;)
Extreme Central Everyone says this but you have to realize the precautions before doing the calibration or what's the point of doing the calibration? In other words I don't mention anything and just show the calibration, then some guy does the calibration in a concrete parking lot with lots of rebar next to a cell tower and 5min later has a fly away. Now what was the point of all that plus on youtube it is very easy to skip ahead to the meat an potato's of the video unlike the old days when we had tape.
FordTechMakuloco, good video. Thank you. I agree that the warnings may be beneficial to some. They are worth including. Thanks for making a simple, straight forward video.
great vids keep it up. just began my videos again getting some inspiration.
Now I got a little bit confused...some say that you should turn it clockwise, some say that counterclockwise ... and I can't figure out who is right..I have dji phantom 2 vision in naza M mode...I use clockwise callibration and it always seems to pass correctly...:D
thanks for sharing, although you could cut out the first 2:20 of the video
Good video and that helped me thanks
I crashed my Phantom 2 Vision+ and its constantly blinking yellow. When I flip it right side up on its landing gear, the gimbal moves like a rodeo rider. When I flip it upside down, the gimbal ceases all movement. What is going on with it? What should I do?
So the go pro should be off? Am I still able to retrieve my footage from the SD card? Will I still be able to watch footage on my go pro app?
Nick Patillo, Realtor Go pro off just for this calibration yes, you can use it once you are flying again.
Well explained thank you.
Where do you think I should buy a quad copter ,,or the copter that has 6 rotors
how you liking the phantom so far?
Absolute best quadcopter I have ever owned! I will be doing a full comparison with the Blade 350QX soon to highlight the different flight characteristics between the phantom and the competition.
how you liking the phantom so far?
Best quad I have ever owned.
Thanks man really helped out
Good explanation, thanks!
I tried doing this, but couldnt quite get it to work, but my main concern is the gimbal itself. Its making drastic movements which im not comforable with. Have you had that before?
I disable the gimbal first.
I did know, I just forgot is all....thanks for reminding me :)
guys what would happen if i cover my compass with little bit of tape and foam , to cover from sand and interference going in ? will it still work properly?
Edmundo Andres I would not cover it at all.
ok , so what i do? if it lands on sand at the beach and sand goes inside the compass it can go crazy
***** Always best to take off and land in the hand with these.
Good vid, thank you.
ive turned it clockwise and the same thing happened it calibrated same lights and all.so do it really matter what way its turned?
I am sure it can be but counter clockwise seems to work best every time where as clockwise seems to have issues.
Very helpful video. Just got my Phantom 2 w/ h33d v2 yesterday. Noticed that my GoPro cam is always facing down and yours isn't. Is there something wrong with my gimbal you think?
Yes you need to calibrate the X1 channel as shown towards the end in this video here-
ruclips.net/video/mKpCJhkLZ1Q/видео.html
Thanks!
Thanks man!
During the vertical calibration you said "click that" click what? Your hand was hidden from view and you did not mention what you were clicking.
As far a arclimber, If you have an extra 3500.00 get the 6 rotor. If not get the Phantom 2 Vision or for 500.00 more get the Vison +. It has the gimbal that allow you so shoot straight down and has the gopro camera.
Not sure what clicking you are talking about but as far as the dji vision I wouldn't get that overpriced heap. This one has the 2 axis brushless gimbal that shoots straight down too and use my gopro I already own.
Thanks. I finally figured it out.
Hi! I saw your video and now I have a couple of questions: is that a Phantom Vision 2 or Vision 2 Plus? and If it is a Phantom Vision 2: How did you install a Zenmuse and GoPro under? Thanks!
+Hugo Mercado Coronel No this is a standard Phantom 2
Ok, I have a Phantom 2 Vision and I want to change the camera and add a Zenmuse.
Thanks anyway!!!
good explanation BTW...so I flew today, 45° and a 15 mph head wind(gigady) and I couldn't get above @150'. the LED light went red, then flashed yellow green yellow green and on and on...you seem knowledgeable about these, what's it mean. I've researched it and the explanation sucked...any chance you could break it down for us that are interested in learning?
WOW! Great tutorial. The instructions on the DJI wiki are horrible! I never knew the difference between S1 and S2. I was flipping the switch on the left! I almost had a fly away today. I noticed the the lights change from green to red then it took off!. I managed to get control of it and bring it down safely. What is the switch on the left for anyway? Can't find any info on it.
Chris Pinon Options that can be programmed in.
Ford, thanks for the response. I found some other great tutorials that explained the function of Course Lock and Home Lock. Thanks!
Chris Pinon Do you keep the S2 switch in OFF mode?
Frank,
Yes, it is on the off position and S1 is GPS. I finally found out the proper use for each switch position. Now the Phantom flies like a charm. I have nor had any problems.
Not sure what I was thinking but I did NOT have mine in the off mode and drone went over the house and hit a tree...not a good feeling. Thanks for the tip...I've usually had it off but this confirms I need to double check
nice video.
good video, i just got mine a did the calibration, but when when i do the last part it turns yellow, then green and goes red for a few seconds then back tto the blinking green, does that mean that the calibration is good? or does it have to keep blinking red for it not to have a good gps lock? thanks
Make sure the end position of the right toggle switch is gps mode then it will flashes as shown in the video and you will know the calibration took.
FordTechMakuloco Mine is in GPS MODE and no matter what I do it will not do the final GREEN lights : /
What camera is that and will it fit a phantom 2 vision plus thanx
New R/C Channel R/C Addict Makuloco-
ruclips.net/channel/UCyKUMl3gkaLYSxpvQjRgWAQ
thanks for the help bro
My LEDS go yellow after trying to calibrate
What does that mean?
Zegeebwah Is you toggle switch back in the gps location?
Thanks for your vid- haven't flown my phantom 2 vision in quite a few months...I haven't updated the software yet as there are some things in the latest versions I'm not keen on however I remember when I got it last January it took 3 (not 2) steps to calibrate (turning on all 3 axes) but now after the second step turning on the vertical axis the quad isn't calibrating - it starts flickering red instead of a steady green...is this something to with not updating the quad to the latest software or something (I have the latest version of the dji app on my mobile devices)..would appreciate your feedback! Thank you
Have you tried calibrating in a field away from interference? The last guy who said this was happening was in a restricted flight zone, but you said you have not updated yours. He had to goto dji for the new error code flash patterns.
Does it always have to be counter clockwise?
dji says either way but I have found counter clockwise to be more successful. Nose down is the most important part.
Hi, i saw a question of yours elsewhere and was wondering if you had had any success finding a way of altering the return to home height? there are a lot of very tall trees round here and if it returns height at preset value it will crash into them! Thanks Mike
Never looked into it further, it should be a programmable feature for sure just like I wish they would give us control of then decent speed, it just keeps getting slower and slower with each update.
FordTechMakuloco thanks for your reply, will keep looking then!
Michael Williams It'll rise to 60' if it's lower than that. If you have it, let's say flying at 200', it'll stay at that height for the return home. If you think your in trouble, before you set the return to home, go high.
That is my thinking on it because it will stay high until it get to the RTH point which should be a safe clear area to descend.
FordTechMakuloco Not sure if updates are to blame for slow descent. I think a lot of it has to do with propwash slowing it down.
does it matter if you turn it clockwise instead of counterclockwise?
+Jonny Diina not sure but any instruction from dji they always specify counter
+FordTechMakuloco not on my phantom 2 standard. Clearly shows clockwise motion
+Jonny Diina look deeper on their site you will see also all the new ones state counter clockwise
I do mine nose up, because I can't shut the gimbal and it freaks out nose down.
I just disconnect gimbal usually.
To the Drone owners: I just purchased one and it arrived two days ago. I noticed that the joystick to the left (up and down) gets stuck when I move it down. Is it normal or is my controller broken?
Julio Oliveira Which model drone? On the phantom both sticks are supposed to self center.
FordTechMakuloco It's one Phantom 2. I know. it's like all joysticks but I meant that the one to the left gets stuck in the "down" position when I'm bringing the drone down. Is it normal?
I mean, when I release the stick shouldn't it go back to the center? It just doesn't. It's like something holds it in the "down" position.
Julio Oliveira Yes it should goto center.
Did you get the V2 or is it the regular Phantom 2?
all the touch holes that are critiquing the guy that made the video, if you don't like it, there is an option to either fast forward, OR back out. why don't you upload your own vid and do it your way, that way I can bash how much you've wasted my time. it's funny that you've tuned in to watch this particular video,so you don't wreck your drone...
+trusso2614 well said
Good information, great instruction but To be honest with you, a minute and 38 seconds of How great I am is not needed. Most people have about a two minuet attrition span - Just a thought my friend
+Nick Alati How great I am? No no your dead wrong there just relaying the precautions before the procedure, why do the procedure if you are only going to do it wrong? Might as well skip the procedure all together. This is not an entertaining video it is an instructional.
+ok that's fine have a great day
good vid
Nice
Clockwise not counter Clockwise
The direction does not matter, what it needs is a 360. Counter clockwise works best and that is why I use it. Think about it, are we heading it north then turning it to the west first or the east, oh wait there is no North heading first to start procedure like the Blade 350QX, therefore the direction doesn't matter.
No chance in hell this works for my unit. Mine just flashes yellow non stop,
You must retry It works every time.
Why do people insist on talking rubbish and wasting time?just get on with the tutorial! It’s to boring having to listen to pointless chit chat! Almost seems like everyone who puts up tutorials love the sound of their own voice! Yet another 30 seconds of my life wasted, sorry I had to cut my watching time short, I got bored
The beginning of the video talked about where and how to calibrate it properly with some very important information or else the calibration will not be complete. Did you not get that?
Aw come on man!! Really? And I thought it would be ok to calibrate in my bath tub 🤔
