I lived in Madison for 13 years, from 97 to 2010. vote is all the way on east side, near east side and northeast. Airport, East town mall, MATC Truax, Atwood, Willy street,,Jenifer street, B B Clark Beach, and more on the north east side, the Sherman neighborhood, and Yahara river boat landing. In my last four years there, I lived in the Camelot apartments. My mode of transportation was bus or walking.
Your videos brings back a lot of memories of being in Madison. And… There’s nothing like spotted cow! thank you. PS. I will give credit to the near west side as I had a job there for a little while. Really liked the Monroe Street area.

Great breakdown of the east vs. west side of Madison! Both areas have unique perks, making it tough to choose the best fit. For anyone moving here, getting settled in the right neighborhood is key - finding local movers who know Madison inside and out can make the transition a lot smoother!

We lived on the East side for 20 years. Raised our kids there and lived in an awesome neighborhood. Our kids did great in high school and off to college. Now we are on the West side. Currently, I prefer this because my job is in Middleton. My favorite thing is the accessibility to the bike paths. I do agree with you both, though, it's personal preference. The best way to decide is to visit this beautiful city and see what suits your lifestyle the best!

Yes for sure Amy! Awesome amenities on both sides, everyone has to determine what works best for them. Also agree on the bike paths, so many of them and you can bike across town and not have to ride on roads at all!

I agree after living downtown for 5 years. I would say while the differences are small, the East side fairs better for young adults/couples, and the West side fairs better for families. The airport may be harder to get to from the West side, but if you aren't living downtown (or outside Madison in Middleton, Sun Prairie, Monona, etc. then the West side holds more residential space and residential, as opposed to urban, parks. Monona Beach, Tenney Park, and James Madison Park do feel more urban than the West's smaller neighborhood parks. The East side holds more to do, but the West side wins if you are settling down. I have heard anecdotal stories of West's high school producing great college applicants, but these stories were biased and purely anecdotal. Commuting into the hospitals or Epic becomes far easier from the West. I enjoy living downtown and using the bus system, so I vote for downtown, but you can't lose either way!

This was a great discription of the two. My wife and I ultimately choose the East side because we are kidless beer loving young adults that prefer being closer to popping spots like Willy St. There is just way more things happening on the east side. The biggest farmers market is easier to get to from the east side. If you are a quiet more conservative family person, then west side is for you.

Great introduction to Madison. Can you do a follow up video with more in-depth neighborhood profiles? It would be nice to know about school ratings, crime, population demographics, median home prices, walkability score, type/age of inventory, and access to grocery stores, restaurants, hospitals, etc. Video foot of the neighborhoods would be awesome. :) Thanks.

East side, no question, if you care about the culture of the city. West Side is more bougie and “new money.”

Karben4, Ale Asylum, Next Door and One Barrel are apparently too many to name for the East.
He doesn’t even name Vintage on University for the West.

Willy street neighborhood is 420 friendly. Monona is in the same area. And only fine 1$ or given a warning for holding less then 2-1 ounces. Besides that east side has less traffic for going home after 4pm. Good luck getting on the beltline to the westside. Not as bad as chicago or los angeles traffic. But its still a 1- 2 hours possible delay.

Joe I could have predicted what side of Madison is preferred by you. It's always the real estate location. You both live in Fitchburg. Joe I have a difficult time understanding how a home on Mason St. near West Highschool and UW hospital could sell for $89,000 in 1984 and be worth over $475,000 in today's market. There aren't many cities in the USA that had that rate of appreciation.

  • @artboymoy

Been living on the south west side of Madison in the Fitchrona area for the past 20 years. Love it as it's easy for me to get in and out of the downtown area having multiple ways to go to avoid traffic. Also the streets open up the parking lane along Monroe St going in and then going out in the after noon, which helps make that an excellent plus for commuters. Also near the Military Ridge and Badger State trails and just down the road from the AMC Imax. But this area has seen a lot of new building with tons of condos and even a retirement building. Crazy. Just keeps making my taxes go up. :p But if people wanted something more affordable in the area, they can check out some of the burbs like Sun Prairie , Cottage Grove, Windsor, Middleton, Fitchburg, Oregon, Cross Plans, Stoughton and even Mt. Horeb for something more affordable...

You totally forgot to talk about the North side neighborhoods. Cherokee is a higher end neighborhood as well as the north side of Mendota. Love the Noth Side and the sense of community. Raised our daughter here and love the feel of the neighborhood.

Agree they should have talked about Madison's North (and South) sides. Lived on the northeast side, in the Brentwood (?) neighborhood for a number of years. It's bordered on the east by N. Sherman Avenue, and on the north by Warner Park. The street I lived on (Calypso Rd.) is short, having mostly Apartment buildings. I remember it as being noisy (especially at night).

Hello, I just subscribed to guys. And I just had to like your video because I love the positive things you say about my 5th favorite city ( Madison wi ) Madison is the only city in Wisconsin that i love. I lived in Madison WI twice. And i was more of a Eastsider. So many memories in the east side because that's where I would hangout. I really started to love school when I went to East high school. I trained at the Ford's Gym by Bob Ford. And most movies I watched was in East Gate. I use to cruise through East Washington with all the home boyz. No disrespect to the West. I like the West but I got much more love to the East. Madison wi is a beautiful city. Especially in the summer. Maybe later in the future you guys tell us about the top 15 things to do in the summer in Madison WI.

Upon an isthmus hard to reach,
the East Beast sits upon their beach.
Upon the west beach sits the West Beast.
Each beach beast thinks they're the best beast.
Which beast is best?...Well, I thought at first
that the East was best and the West was worst.
Then I looked again from the west to the east
and I liked the beast on the east beach least.

Several places you guys mentioned are technically on the North side (airport, mallard games), and others on the south side. Not really fair to omit these neighborhoods entirely as it paints an incomplete picture for your viewers and potential new residents. They all have their own unique vibe and charm apart from west and east Madison.
