    Description
Fischer's lovebird is a small species of Old World Parrot belonging to the lovebird genus Agapornis. It is named after German explorer Gustav Fischer.
Its natural plumage is mostly green with an orange face, yellow nape and breast, olive-green crown, and purple-blue upper tail. It has a bright red bill and bare, white eye rings. Sexes are alike, and juveniles are duller. Several color variations have been developed, most famously, a blue variation.
    Vocalizations: Call and song
The common call is made up of a series of high-pitched, twittery notes.
    Distribution and range
Fischer's lovebirds are native to a small region in East Africa. Populations are known to migrate west in times of drought. Introduced populations have established in Portugal.
    Habitat
They inhabit savannah, woodlands, scrub forests, and cultivated lands.
    Diet and feeding habits
Their diet comprises seeds, berries, and fruit, but they are also known to raid crops such as maize and millet, earning them a reputation as agricultural pests among farmers.
    Nesting and breeding
Like other lovebirds, Fischer's lovebirds are monogamous and mate for life. They nest in tree cavities and construct their nests out of grasses, stems, and bark. Females typically lay four to five eggs.
The incubation period lasts roughly twenty-two days, and the nestlings fledge between 38 and 42 days after hatching.
    Status and conservation
The species is in decline due to trapping for the pet trade. Hybridization with the yellow-collared lovebird also poses a threat. Fisher’s lovebird is evaluated as “near-threatened” by the IUCN.
