mind blown, did not even consider getting seedlings started in late fall with the intention of over-wintering. Always figured they'd be stunted plants. Also a great not about extending the strawberry season, I had no idea you could get that much of heads start. Beautiful work, and thank you as always
I just discovered your chanel. In a few months my dream comes true of having a house with a lot of space and a greenhouse. So looking forward of starting my veg garden. Learning a lot of your video's.
I can't believe you start all your seedlings in that small space! Thats amazing. Farms are putting up large greenhouses for propergation purposes only in the market garden scale around here.
Thanks, and I must admit I am a little envious sometimes of the huge space people have for propagation because I have to manage mine very tightly. However, it keeps the process super efficient and is a good example for other people, that you do not need massive space to do this!
I have several trays designed by Charles, as well as some others from Containerwise. I love them, they are very strong and really help the seedlings get a good start. And I'm happy to support Charles' efforts! No more floppy, flimsy seed trays for me 😃!
We have just taken on our first ever plot. All your resources have been invaluable with getting some idea together of how we want to proceed. We will be using your no dig principles, and just hope we get a small fraction of your success. Congrats on a fantastic set-up at Homeacres!
Thank you so much for sharing. I have been propagating strawberry runners in small pots, I will do some more in bigger pots and keep them in the greenhouse until I get early strawberries next year. I will get yours trays as well 🥰
I had some bog plants that I needed to keep with a set level of water 3 inch below the surface. The plants were outside and with all the rain they were flooding. So I joined all the tubs with hoses that siphoned between each tub. Then from the final tub I connected a hose to siphon over to a empty yogurt pot who’s rim was just the right level for water . Now when it rains the the level stays the same. I’m going to try to make an automatic watering system in the poly for my tomatoes using the same system next spring.
The past 3 years I have sown 2packs of alpine strawberry seeds in mid-Jan into seed trays, transplant the whole tray into a mushroom crate around May, & in Oct I divide into 4 clumps & plant out round the garden. I have masses of fruit on them this year.
Thank you! We will have a new tunnel house for our winter. Im thinking now of set ups for it. No dig ground, room for compost bin, seedlings shelves, lines. What else should i think of?
Always so beautiful there. Here the bugs don't mind. 1 1/2 inches of more rain again and gnats having too much fun. So we let garden surface dry out and applied dry used coffee grounds that are supposed to discourage egg laying.
Trying something new is good. Seeds were up in one week. Wow. Strawberries home grown from runners so it's free. Keeping us updated must be a chore. Thanks to all. We picked 17, I'm counting, bush beans today. Even the few over grown are sweet and delicious. 60 and 70 degrees here. Bushes are healthy and expecting more. There's just the two of us so no one is crying. lol. Zone 6b USA. Charles we are expecting 80 degrees so would you cover yours?
Yes! Time to pot up strawberry plants for winter into the greenhouse and pull out frost cover for fig tree, tall salad planters by kitchen door and pull August planted carrots. I love that you’re trying the mini greenhouse planters. I use them over winter to early spring to start seeds, but I’m considering laying frost fabric over plants inside the greenhouse on cold winter nights. Do you use frost covers inside the greenhouse to help give winter hardy plants a little protection? 😊
Hi Charles, I was wondering if you ever did one of your experiments on containers. I'm a balcony gardener. 😅 I was wondering if I could just add some compost to my containers and follow the no dig approach in such a small scale. Thank you!
Fantastic video. I love my CD trays, I have all sizes. They really are the best trays ever. Now I need to get some of those green .. what did you call them ... trays for setting them in, and a dibbler :-)
Just bought a set of these trays Charles. When seedlings are ready to be put in the ground, what is the best way to get the seedlings out of the CD60 without damaging roots please? Apologies if a daft question, novice gardener here ! Thank you
Hi Steve, thanks and I use my little finger to push from the bottom in each hole, and the rootballs pop up cleanly. However, if perhaps you did not push the compost in firmly before sowing, or the plants are still less than say three weeks old, the roots might not hold the compost together. So when you fill these trays, push the compost in really firmly.
I am in zone 4 in USA…i have some nice healthy strawberry plants…can i keep them over the winter in a cold frame? It would definitely freeze in there but??
Hi, just an idea, if the module trays had a lip on the top, you would have the option to overfill so they could double up as trays with the extra drainage?
This is the link you need, and I had understood they would be available now and they assure me they are shipping soon containerwise.co.uk/product/charles-dowding-new-base-tray-polycarbonate-lid/
Great video Charles! You are such an inspiration to watch and learn from! I was planning to grow some winter greens in a tray indoors, however, I missed the recommended sowing date (so much so that I started sowing the day this video was recorded). Needless to say, my seedlings are very leggy and some are already falling over 😔Would it be a good idea to start over and keep them under a grow light? I am planning to keep them indoors throughout winter even after transplanting into trays. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
Thank you that's nice. If you are planning indoor growth then sowing date is less critical because you have the extra light. It might be simplest to start over, best of luck!
Oooh only if you use row cover in the tunnel - check the work of Eliot Coleman @fourseasonsfarm in Maine - but they are I think zone 5, and succeed a lot through winter
Need to know something Mr Dowding, maybe a bit away from the video, but does the amount or frequency of compost on your no dig garden matter when you are planting heavy feeding plants like pumpkins?
Given up strawberries. I am over run with voles and mice and no matter what I do I can't keep up with their control. Beetroot is almost a no, and they give the onions a pasting every spring. This is since next door farmer has a couple of blocks shooting every fox they can. He spends a fortune now on poison and he is over run as well.

if you leave one cell empty you can see water level and use that cell to pour water in
Good thinking
Lovely plan!
Nifty! Love this!
Neat idea, thanks!

Wow, using a Charles Dowding tray as a seed tray, great idea, thanks for sharing this! Makes sense to me, Im going to give it a try.

I found having a reflector behind seedlings placed on a windowsill is a huge advantage. The foil coated bubble wrap type is the easiest to use.

Love your experiments. Hope you can bring some of your products to Chile when you come in December 🤩
I hope so but it's unlikely!

Oh yes Samantha, when it's -6C outside or colder
I wish we your trays here in the US, I have struggled to find enough drainage that's does not bend and break.

They survive freezing, go dormant so it just delays spring growth
What is white lining in mushroom crates that holds in soil
Two sheets of newspaper
@CharlesDowding1nodig thank you

Interesting thought but I don't get this idea

Do you use everbearing, or summer bearing strawberries for growing undercover? Thanks!
I don't because I want the space for summer vegetables. I guess that it should work, worth a try if you want that
Charles do you think I could grow lettuce in winter in the poly tunnel.
I'm in zone 4b in the US
Oooh only if you use row cover in the tunnel - check the work of Eliot Coleman @fourseasonsfarm in Maine - but they are I think zone 5, and succeed a lot through winter
Need to know something Mr Dowding, maybe a bit away from the video, but does the amount or frequency of compost on your no dig garden matter when you are planting heavy feeding plants like pumpkins?
No, I give the same amount of compost to all beds, because I am feeding soil life with it. Those organisms sort the feeding :)

What’s your views on Polycrub? Will you ever purchase one?
Not for here because a normal polytunnel is way cheaper. They are best suited for high-wind climates, as I understand it
