Anyone who can put themselves through trying food's when you suffer from texture/taste aversion gets a 10/10 from me. You can see the struggle. I'm an adhd kid and can 100% relate to all of this! Steak is still a block for me.
not 2 sound corny but i'm glad that someone else shares my absolute terror of trying new food, i also had the "always have to leave before dinner" at friends houses as a kid
Nice to meet a fellow previous dinner leaver, if you’re still similar, just doing bit by bit of small things and you’ll get there, I feel 1000x more open to it now it’s so much better
Same and everyone judges you for eating plain things like goddamn I’m so sorry I have the tastebuds of a 17th century orphan but that does not affect you
Honestly mate I grew up similar to yourself. Our family was poor and we were literally raised on potato and chicken for literally 90% of our childhood. Finally at the age of 16 having a girlfriend and have a group of mates I finally had the opportunity to try new foods. I tried pizza for the first time, Mc Donald's, pasta, burgers, Chinese. Its crazy to think about it now, but there's still a lot of pretty normal foods that I refuse to eat from having such a flavourless upbringing.
You said you never tried foods then listed junk food. Try out some more healthy foods. I hated veg but once I got over what I thought I didn't like eating it more I genuinely felt different and healthier
@@UK_Paranormalz69 dude they said they grew up on chicken and POTATOES (a vegetable) and in the other 10% of the time probably ate other vegetables. be so fr the minute you have the opportunity to pay for your own foods to try new things you’re not gonna run straight to vegetables. also they wouldn’t have solely ate at take out places-
McDonald's burgers are trash. Go to somewhere where they make really solid burgers and it'll change your view on burgers. McDonalds is just additive shit that tricks your brain into thinking it's good.
watching this series honestly makes me so happy, I’m still in the phase of bad sensory issues with food, and having to leave anywhere when food gets mentioned. Particular textures, smells and things touching is too much and I can’t eat it, and there’s specific stuff I haven’t tried once cause I can predict that It’s gonna give me anxiety. Seeing someone else go through a similar thing is really cool to see, I hope it’s better for you, or anyone reading this who is experiencing similar stuff :))
This is a highly relatable video honestly! I’m 28, grew up exactly the same and have the same food issues! “You’ll grow out of it” babes I’m 28, that ships sailed 😂
I was usually pushed to try new foods as a kid, which, fine, I understand why even though sometimes I thought there's no way my tastebuds would evolve to like something I previously hated in a week.... I'm 27 now and I still hate a lot of those foods!!
I genuinely lovely this series. I have issues with food mentally and due to sensory issues. Im sincerely proud of Ciaran for trying new food. I know how hard it is. But also make me realise im not as fussy as i thought i was.
this made me kinda emotional?? well done my man! food fear is so difficult to get over, even if you end up never having this stuff again, it must be refreshing to feel like "i did it anyway!"
I just want to know who gave you the recipe for a spag bol with peas in it.... other than that, good job on trying out a whole bunch of potential sensory nightmare foods!
I've always had food aversions and am also now in my 20s pushing myself to try new things Feels good to hear someone talking about it and the anxiety surrounding it!
You did amazing Ciaran! I love those videos, seeing you try to get out of your comfort zone helps me and others do the same☺️ more of this please! And thank you for the great content each time
this video is very comforting in a way. i have many memories of my family getting frustrated and insisting i eat different foods, and getting laughed at for gagging or feeling sick. this kind of thing isn’t as easy as people make it, and it’s very nice, at least, to see other people have the same issues and be able to face them slowly.
I’ve never seen a more relatable video, I used to hate so much food as a kid but now I’ve been trying new stuff and the gagging, the shock at something being good, and the overcoming of the reflexes were all things I went through too 😆 mad respect man goodluck on the rest of your journey!
I'm in a similar boat myself with eating new foods so this vid has gave me alot of confidence to not be as scared of things, i'm slowly making improvements which is giving me more faith i'll improve.
Already figured out from the previous video that it sounded like you didn’t have the best upbringing. Well done for overcoming the anxiety when it comes to food. Over time you’ll get better. My bf (25). Myself (24) Been together 5 years now. When we met he was like you when it came to food. Extremely picky. He grew up with parents who didn’t like or knew how to cook. So grew up eating nothing but fast food and takeaways. He didn’t know what fruit and veg was and many other kinds of dishes. Me and my family has educated him on how to cook and try all different foods that he would regularly turn his nose up. He has gotten better eating and being more healthy. He’s grown and realised how amazing my mums cooking is. He was 17 stone when we met and now he’s 11 stone. I also grew up with a single mum looking after me and my brother. But, she still managed to cook healthy meals from scratch every single night. I’m a picky eater myself but I have tried all varieties of food. My mother is South African, so it was either I eat the food I’m given or I get a beating 😂
I have to admit your first video made me feel some type of way. I appreciate the insight into your personal life and it makes it much easier to empathise with you.
@@asherbryant2553 no of course not, but I guess it came more from a bitter feeling. I was much like him growing up with very limited eating range and I had a real issue with textures and if someone had touched my food or sometimes even just got too close to it. Then at 16 I was made homeless and to start with found it very hard and long story short I ended up getting over my issue with food. There's my tragic backstory, not that you need it to empathise with me 😅
man, i had no idea people had issues with trying new foods. I personally have always loved all sorts if foods and to see lots of other people in the same situation as ciarán is eye opening in a way, hope everyone is doing well! ps : big props to ciarán + any others trying new things! you have my respect
It's refreshing to see someone who has the same problem I've had my entire life. I'm currently 30 years old and have the same condition as you. It's an absolute nightmare going through this. Luckily I met my girlfriend years ago and both her and her family understand my problem and are completely understanding. It's frustrating though. I've ended up crying at the dinner table as I physically cannot eat a lot of food no matter how much I try. I'm going to give it a good go now though as I have a 1 year old and don't wanna be a bad influence to him growing up. Appreciate the vid man
Nothing wrong at all with being a picky eater! We all have preferences! I've been one for most of my life too and only recently got into trying new foods.
Technically there is something nutritionally wrong with only eating marmite on toast. I would absolutely hang myself if I had to just live on toast for the rest of my life, not that I hate bread or marmite, I like both, but you know....the normal amount to...
Omg this is amazing! I get so scared of trying new food so i genuinally think this is so brave! 💛💛 I also really hate getting juice all over the place when eating fruit so from being young i’ve always prefered slightly underripe fruit like i can’t stand juicy nectarines but i absolutely love them when they are crunchy!
Some people just didn’t get the opportunity to have food variety, and that’s nothing to be ashamed of. I didn’t try curry until I was 19 because the potential spiciness terrified me; it took my partner ordering me a Korma and sitting next to me with water and plain white bread, just in case🤝🏼
Seriously impressed Ciaran. I'm 37 and have almost exactly the same reactions, aversions, fears, anxieties and history with food. Ive never cooked an egg... but like you say, why would I if I don't eat them! Congratulations, it is genuinely inspiring seeing these vids, I totally get it!
Not eating eggs seems so weird to me, then I imagine what a boiled egg having rubbery and mushy parts, inside a shell, usually with little gross bits must be like to a 37 year old....and now I hate eggs too.
im also a 'picky eater' as others have called me my whole life. meat was always one i really struggled with, i can finally enjoy beef and lamb if its cooked low and slow and each fibre just breaks apart effortlessly. none of that endless chewing! YAY
The absolute wave of dread and anxiety at a friend's house when they would mention what they were having for dinner and it was not of the very simple, very plain things my brain would be okay with putting in my mouth is one of the worst feelings i can remember. New textures and tastes were so revolting to me that i rarely strayed from toast, peanut butter sandwiches, grilled cheese, etc. I recently tried asparagus and even covered in seasonings and slightly charred im still on the fence about it. It's nice to see i'm not alone
Thanks for making this Ciaran, I massively relate to the fear of trying new foods with certain textures and smells and things. Especially when you mentioned the dread of childhood meal time, I completely share that feeling. So impressed by your ability to step out the comfort zone and it has massively urged me to do the same
@@ciarancarlin spaghetti is the worst pasta to have with bolognese anyway. its a product of the british not understanding pasta. the pasta you had with it is better than spaghetti. though traditionally its tagliatelle.
the reason im picky is EXACTLY the same i also get anxious still to this day when it comes to eating at fancy restaurants/people's houses who dont understand my situation, thank god my boyfriend's family are so supportive
Steak is my absolute FAVOURITE cus it used to be such a rare occassion i could ever have it but i rate you so highly for trying all these things you dont feel so comfortable with 🙌
I’ve actually found someone just like me! I have the same fear of thinking what it would taste like in my head. I’m 18yrs old and I haven’t had any kind of soup, never had salad in my life and anything that looks gloopy like porridge. In years to come, I might start trying it but the only things I do like is chicken and potatoes.. 😂
Funny how people get annoyed at this, a fear’s a fear, even if it’s irrational it’s not like you can just not have it. Very well done to Ciaran for working so hard towards getting over it!
Good on you! Doesn't matter your age, doing things outside your norm/comfort zone is hard. Props to you and your mum. Single mums work their butts off for their kids doesnt matter if its toast or spag bowl you were fed and looked after regardless
Also a fussy eater here. Main issue is textures. I never try foods that I’ve deemed gross without trying. Have recently tried multiple foods I’d never dream of trying before (including a sprout🤢). Realised while watching this that I may have been subconsciously influenced to be brave and try things from your series of overcoming food fears on here so thanks!
Hi Ciaran, can I just say how refreshing watching these videos of yours are. I too am a fussy eater 😅 and completely sympathised with your anxiety of trying new foods. I’ve laughed all the way through, mainly because it’s like looking in the mirror and I know the feeling well. Well done!
I can't believe how similar my food phobias are with you and I'm 26. Never tried porridge, kiwi or nectarine until last year and dont mind them. And I am obsessed with bread and hated dinner at friends houses growning up. Its the textures and just telling by looking at it that I won't like it.
Lol I’m a picky eater too , I always wonder how me ordering something basic or plain and people get so flustered when it has zero effect on their lives
Love the vid man. I too am a very fussy eater. Spag bol is the only thing in this video I'd eat and I still couldn't bring myself to try the others like you have. And man it was great to hear you say its the way you imagine foods will taste and what its texture will be that puts you off. That's exactly my problem too. I feel oddly proud of you for trying it
this is my actual nightmare 😭 i have sensory issues to do with food. even if i like the taste, if the texture’s bad, i won’t eat it. if the texture’s REALLY bad, i’ll heave, gag, etc. and if i don’t like the look of it (if it looks like the texture’s bad), i won’t even try it. for example when strawberries look a bit squishy, i won’t eat them, or if orange juice has too many bits, i’ll literally gag. one time my mum made me eat a banana, it was such a bad combination of texture and taste that i almost threw up lmao
I'm so proud of u, it can be so overwhelming to try new flavors (especially when its a weird texture) but ur making progress, u really are an inspiration to me
I've always been a picky eater, still am to this day but when I was in primary school i lived off jam sandwiches, chips and chocolate. didn't try chicken until I was about 10. I don't get people who get angry about it. I am so proud of you for going out of your comfort zone to try new foods, It's actually extremely stressful and people don't seem to realise that. this was really inspirational :)
Watched you for a while Ciarán and this video is great for me as I have EXACTLY the same issues with food. I've never resonated with anything more than I do this.
I think on the topic of making spag bol a more appealing colour I think it depend how much sauce there is sometimes it can look brown but can also look a nice vibrant red sometimes
With streak you definitely need to do it well done for the first time if you’ve not had much beef before then bring it down slowly to find your preferred way of having it
I don’t understand why comments had to be so cruel about it. Many people who have problems trying new foods have anxiety or neurological conditions that cause them to be particularly sensitive or anxious about trying new foods, I don’t see why it bothers people so much. Major kudos to people trying new things in 2023 🎉
youve achieved a lot in these videos and its honestly been really wholesome watching you work to overcome this phobia. its not childish or silly and we are proud of you (-: (i tried paella for the first time this summer and it made me want to die so i know how u feel xo)
Kudos for trying all these foods, double dip recession kiwi got me haha 😅 also, YFood is actually really good, 15mins extra sleep in the morning and no washing up 👌🏻
Genuinely have felt the same way the whole of my life (I could genuinely make a list of all the foods I eat and it wouldn’t be very long), weirdly isn’t the same for drinks though. 100% get the leaving friends houses’ before dinner, also hate when we’re ordering a takeaway and you don’t wanna disappoint other people.
The thing is with a lot of these foods is that they are better within something instead of just on their own. It would also be interesting to see you get a chef to cook them for you so it is done correctly and possibly be able to make it look more appealing to you!
Nice to see people expanding their pallet. I was a fussy eater until i met my ex(I was 21 years old) she was Romanian and introduced me to a lot of new foods. Only good thing i did get from her though lol
i'm absolutely the same with bread, you just can't go wrong; i've experienced being looked down upon for my relationship with food and it sucks good for u trying stuff tho
A fair assessment of porridge. It's a very utilitarian breakfast, warm, cheap, filling and modifiable to tastes (sugar/jam/condensed milk/blueberries etc.) Same with a baked potato. It's just a cooked potato. Baking it for a long time makes it nice and crisp on the outside and fluffy on the inside like a massive brown chip but it's mainly a carby carrier for tastier dressings like butter and cheese. I won't diss your spag bol for neither containing spaghetti or a proper bolognese sauce because all pasta tastes more or less the same and as long as it's got some kind of mince and tomato sauce that's pretty much all of the bases covered. There will be better ones and worse ones but you now know what to expect. Well done champ
im a picky eater and ive been trying to step away from that ive tried a good bit of things for some time and some have become my fav food i used to ONLY eat cheese pizza but i tried pepperoni pizza for the first time and it changed my life and while there are some things i dont like, for example i dont really like tomatoes but theres 2 things im scared and even refuse of trying for a while mushrooms and fish mushrooms scare me because for some reason my brain keeps thinking about the poisonous ones and tricks me and my brain tricks me into thinking that the tiny fish bones will somehow get stuck inside my throat anyways great video and it genuinely helped me a bit
My family havent had the most money growing up, but they genuinely tried to at least give us variety with veggies and stuff. and i cant eat most veggies, i react pretty similar to the clips in the video and felt that. idk if it was the lower quality food, or the way it was prepared, but this video showed me that i should at least try most stuff, and if it is smth ive never eaten im doing that, but with known stuff i avoid them as much as possible, except i cook for my family, then i just prepare my own portion without the stuff i dont like. Some stuff i know i hate so much i dont even know the english name of, since ive never needed it. (native german potato) whats intersting is tho, is that i dont mind the stuff i dont like in non native cuisines, like general asian cuisine. im sure the reason behind that is that its cooked with different stuff, like my all mighty soy sauce. i practically use it as a replacement for salt and msg, even in native cuisine. i always get asked why it tastes so different when i cook it, since my sister hates soy sauce i keep that a secret to me.
As a person who grew up lower income, I still remember when my mom brought home some kiwis for us to try for the first time ever. I felt like a captain of industry the first time I ate it. It's not my favorite fruit, and it has been some years since I've had one, but I didn't hate it. 10/10 would try again.

I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS FOR SO LONG
He’s a broken human, but he knows it… I respect it.
I feel oddly proud of you for trying it
yes i loved the first vid of this. can’t wait 😝😝
Well done for pushing your boundaries, you can always go back to your favourites but at least you've tried some new things!
this is my actual nightmare 😭 i have sensory issues to do with food. even if i like the taste, if the texture’s bad, i won’t eat it. if the texture’s REALLY bad, i’ll heave, gag, etc. and if i don’t like the look of it (if it looks like the texture’s bad), i won’t even try it. for example when strawberries look a bit squishy, i won’t eat them, or if orange juice has too many bits, i’ll literally gag. one time my mum made me eat a banana, it was such a bad combination of texture and taste that i almost threw up lmao
I can only imagine Italians reacting to peas in Ragu 😂
Actually admire this! I struggle so much with certain foods and can actually see this little series helping somewhat :) keep being you dude!
Also, these videos are brilliant for bringing the judgemental pricks out of their shells
I'm so proud of u, it can be so overwhelming to try new flavors (especially when its a weird texture) but ur making progress, u really are an inspiration to me
What a wholesome video, proud of you Ciarán :)
You've managed to make it equally sad with the back story and still sort of annoying. I salute you
Watched you for a while Ciarán and this video is great for me as I have EXACTLY the same issues with food. I've never resonated with anything more than I do this.
this is such a fucking wholesome series
I think on the topic of making spag bol a more appealing colour I think it depend how much sauce there is sometimes it can look brown but can also look a nice vibrant red sometimes
sick vid mate, I have ARFID and what u describes really resonates with me, keep up the sick work x
You're progress since last time is crazy! Killing it!
As a fellow picky eater here, I'm proud of you for making progress!
my sister was like this growing up and still like it today gg to going out of your comfort zone and trying new things man
goes on about making spag bol and proceeds to show pasta bol lol
Describing a kiwi as a kangaroo bollock has completely changed my perception of them
ive been the exact same all my life, so much anxiety around food growing up
Well done on trying new stuff! I get how hard this can be. 💪
Major kudos to people trying new things in 2023 🎉
youve achieved a lot in these videos and its honestly been really wholesome watching you work to overcome this phobia. its not childish or silly and we are proud of you (-:
(i tried paella for the first time this summer and it made me want to die so i know how u feel xo)
As someone who struggles with food seeing you trying new stuff is making me think twice now, never like spag bowl ever tho
The fact that you’re willing to try all these new foods is HUGE! Pat yourself on the back lad; you did really well 👍🏻
Well, Marmite on toast is the greatest food known to humanity.
The "I can tell your a chicken mayo boy " I'm a chicken mayo boy without the mayo
Proud of you Ciarán.
Kudos for trying all these foods, double dip recession kiwi got me haha 😅
also, YFood is actually really good, 15mins extra sleep in the morning and no washing up 👌🏻
Genuinely have felt the same way the whole of my life (I could genuinely make a list of all the foods I eat and it wouldn’t be very long), weirdly isn’t the same for drinks though.
Proud of you mate
this is genuinely impressive, coming from somone with equally as autisitc difficutlies with food
Nice to see people expanding their pallet. I was a fussy eater until i met my ex(I was 21 years old) she was Romanian and introduced me to a lot of new foods. Only good thing i did get from her though lol
been waiting for this one 🐐
i'm absolutely the same with bread, you just can't go wrong; i've experienced being looked down upon for my relationship with food and it sucks good for u trying stuff tho
A fair assessment of porridge. It's a very utilitarian breakfast, warm, cheap, filling and modifiable to tastes (sugar/jam/condensed milk/blueberries etc.)
Same with a baked potato.
All the love to Ciaráns mom❤❤
im a picky eater and ive been trying to step away from that
ive tried a good bit of things for some time and some have become my fav food
i used to ONLY eat cheese pizza but i tried pepperoni pizza for the first time and it changed my life
and while there are some things i dont like, for example i dont really like tomatoes
but theres 2 things im scared and even refuse of trying for a while
mushrooms and fish
mushrooms scare me because for some reason my brain keeps thinking about the poisonous ones and tricks me
and my brain tricks me into thinking that the tiny fish bones will somehow get stuck inside my throat
anyways great video and it genuinely helped me a bit
My family havent had the most money growing up, but they genuinely tried to at least give us variety with veggies and stuff. and i cant eat most veggies, i react pretty similar to the clips in the video and felt that. idk if it was the lower quality food, or the way it was prepared, but this video showed me that i should at least try most stuff, and if it is smth ive never eaten im doing that, but with known stuff i avoid them as much as possible, except i cook for my family, then i just prepare my own portion without the stuff i dont like. Some stuff i know i hate so much i dont even know the english name of, since ive never needed it. (native german potato)
whats intersting is tho, is that i dont mind the stuff i dont like in non native cuisines, like general asian cuisine. im sure the reason behind that is that its cooked with different stuff, like my all mighty soy sauce. i practically use it as a replacement for salt and msg, even in native cuisine. i always get asked why it tastes so different when i cook it, since my sister hates soy sauce i keep that a secret to me.
hahah I'm sorry about the other comment. I'm enjoying watching you try new things nonetheless. Fair play fella
nice to see someone who is also scared of trying new stuff I hope to try as many new things as you 🙏
As a person who grew up lower income, I still remember when my mom brought home some kiwis for us to try for the first time ever. I felt like a captain of industry the first time I ate it. It's not my favorite fruit, and it has been some years since I've had one, but I didn't hate it. 10/10 would try again.
Well Done Ciarán, very good to step out of you comfort zone! I know how hard this must have been but well done😁
Absolutely did not cook that porridge properly lmao but great job on trying it!
