  • The discovery at Sutton Hoo unlocked the darkest medieval age in Europe. The 1400 year old helmet was discovered in 1939 by Basil Brown on the estate of Edith Pretty in Suffolk, England. The helmet was buried in a vast Anglo Saxon grave from the 7th century.
This art history video discusses the impact the Sutton Hoo discovery had on our understanding of Anglo Saxon culture and provides a description of the helmet’s construction and symbolism.

The music in the background is nostalgic! It reminds me of the game RuneScape.

Interesting, that is pretty old. Yeah the music is vaguely medieval. Instruments were pretty limited back then -like lutes and drums, so it's not period correct.

Such an interesting video - I saw the helmet (and the reconstruction) at the British Museum. Is it possible to share the credits of the music?

Imagine getting one of these made for you as an Anglo Saxon noble and you wear it just to get cooked 5 minutes into a battle

Reminded me of Taliesin by Frank Lloyd Wright, which means “shining brow” or “radiant brow” in Welsh. Apparently Taliesin was a poet In the 6th century, the century immediately preceding the date of this helmet. He was known to be “twice-born”, borrowed mythology from the Christ story maybe? I wonder if there was some admixture of the symbolism between the Christian wales and Pagans residing in other parts of England during these centuries.
