This is a great car, but you must to do maintenance correctly to avoid any serious problem. Hi mate. Nice video. I just love this car. In fact, the 20v Turbo is one of my dream cars. That one only came out to Brazil. The dash dials in the Marea came out like that on all versions until the very beginning of the year 2000. After that all Mareas and Bravas came out with the round dials like all Bravo's came with. There is even the 2.4cc petrol that came out in Brazil and I think Poland too. All Mareas came out with AC. They were made world wide until 2004. The Stilo came to replace them. Fiat estate cars maybe did not have had that big success in Britain but worldwide that had. Brazil probably is one of the places where you see more Fiat estate cars. They even have the Elba that is an estate Fiat Uno. I drove one a lot in Brazil when on holidays there years ago. If I had the money for that, I would import many models from Brazil that didnt make it to Europe. Regards.
Had a 1.6 16v Marea weekend ELX as well. Put in a mouse grey leather interior and rear HLX subframe with solid subframe bushes. Had many many fond memories and miles with it. Tons of space, cargo room and just an overall joy to drive. It had rust on the floorpan around the sills, which is a very common area for this type of chassis (the Type C, also shared with a lot of Alfa Romeo's) but a few weekends with the angle grinder and welder she was sorted out again. Another common and notorious area for rust is behind the front strut tower panel. What strikes me the most is that this 20v HLX didn't come with AC. Not sure if this was an option or not. Shame it's not near me or else I'd get it and put back on the road again.
Drove my mate down from Lancashire to Basingstoke to collect this very car yesterday. It will be saved, and by the way it ran like a dream on the 240 mile trip back up North.
In 2005, I bought a 1999 Weekend 100 ELX in dark green. Even at only 6 years old the roof had to be fixed because there were rust holes underneath the plastic strips. The floor was still OK back then. I drove it for another 5 years and had lots of electronic and other issues with it, but I did love the huge booth and the fold down rear bumper, especially on holidays. And it did 191 kmh on the GPS on the German Autobahn 😁🇮🇹
My uncle had one of these in the same color but the JTD 105 engine. He previously had a Tempra and loved it, but he wasn't very pleased with this one so he replaced it with an Accord. Now he owns a Volvo SUV.
You said servicing was no problem at all but the reason there are so few left of the 20v (not that there so many sold to start with) is the cambelt change on them was officially an engine out job due to lack of space and that came in (circa 2003) at over £1000 and two days work. The market price at the time was about £1500 for a 4 year old example so most people just dumped them on the market for whatever they could get. A non-franchise workshop would do the belt in-situ by dropping the gearbox end to make space but that damaged other parts in many cases leading to more repair bills. The front wishbones were made of butter (nothing new for Fiats) but at least those were easy to swap and not too expensive... Putting all that to one side though the 20v estate was a stealth rocket at a time when your average 2.0l family saloon struggled to make 130bhp let alone the 155bhp the 20v developed. It wouldn't set the world alight in terms of handling but it did more than a passingly good job. I bought mine as a tow car for racing (in Auto Italia), the best (interesting) alternative was the 156 estate but the load space in that was terrible even if you could have the wonderful v6 up front... in the end I gave it away to my father - I could have got more scrapping it than selling it which would have been a real crime
A friend of mine had one back in the 2000s, also an HLX, in factory black with the optional air conditioning, which was very useful in a black car with quite a lot of glass area. It looked properly sinister in black. The Marea Weekend was a very good looking estate car in my eyes, and there were quite a few around in my area. His had a taste for head gaskets, it used to pop them every 10,000 miles, but he loved the car and had a good FIAT mechanic so it wasn't really an issue for him. Power steering racks were another issue with it, only lasting about 50,000 miles before becoming very clunky with visible lost movement in them. That one had over 200,000 miles on it when it went to the scrap yard, mainly due to being rear ended by a Transit and partly due to the need for a larger car having had an extra surprise baby...
At first I thought you was going to say youve been tasked with sorting the rust out but agree thats more than just a couple of sills or floor pans. The GT is bad but is much more desirable in good condition I think than these pretty unloved Mareas. Always thought the name was odd for a car too. Great sounding 5 pot.
@@ItaliaAutos same here I went on auto show with my father to buy my self a brand new Stilo station wagon, and when i saw it in flesh up close, i decided against it , it didnt look Italian to me at all it was so Germanic and unappealing , that was 2001 or something as my first new car. I bought second hand Marea slightly damaged fixed it up with 1.6 engine and heavily modified it, lowered the car and tuned it from 106 hp to 180 hp on TNG - it didnt even had a rev limiter , was hitting 10-11k rpm like mad. barely any issues with it, except few oil leaks - as my late father used to say "Fuck Fiat if it doesn't leak the oil" to this day i miss that car.
Worked for fiat main dealer for over 20 year's had about every model made..had a 1990 croma turbo in white with blue velour interior, what a car. Had a Uno 45 start in early days last car was a stilo 2.4 Barth Michael Schumacher ltd etd
I learned to drive in a 2000 Marea ELX 115 (1.8) saloon, I like the styling, the rarity and it was a great car to drive, engine was very flexible, you could pull away in 4th without too much trouble (my dad showed me this, so I had to try it in 5th - and managed it, although it was a bit tricky!). Being a saloon it looked bigger than it was, and with L-plates it looked slow, but drop a couple of gears and put your foot down and it went. I agree, the interior is cheap and nasty, and being in the passenger seat you would look at the completely useless parcel space in lieu of an airbag. The only bad thing about the engine was that the cambelt needed changing twice as often as Fiat stated, unfortunately, my dad only found this out after the car mysteriously stopped one day. Amazingly, depstie it being not worth much he did get it repaired, and it was an MOT failure due to non-parking wipers that caused it to be traded in for a Citroen C3. I would so love another.
After they are discontinued in the continent, it was kept being produced in Brasil and Turkey. (In Turkey with only 1.6 16v engine). New trim included SX (as base model), Liberty (middle trim) and the Exclusive (you know what that would mean). When they are produced within the borders, it's actually much cheaper to both buy and run. And in my opinion, the facelift (or "bootlift" if you will) looks that much better with Lancia Lybra taillights. Shame, we don't get 5 cylinders after the facelift... Good car and I hope someone had the courage to save it.
I got the next step up, the Stilo Multiwagon, Love my stilo's and they have been all 115 Jtd's. Ok they have their quirks but I would take mine on a road trip and not even think about it. I did 800 miles in a day last year and it didn't miss a beat.
NO! Mareas NEVER can die ( the face of them on the marea, brava and bravo i adore ) i have a green brava 1.2 sx 2001 AND i love him more than any thing my granddad had a silver 1.6 sx marea
It rains a lot in the UK. Probably these cars are in better condition in southern Europe. I own a 147 and I bet it's not so rusted, but climate in eastern Spain isn't that extreme.
I had a Marea 1.8 ELX in sedan form. It was very reliable, even the electrics. Nice design, it was like no other car on the road. The only issues were rattles on the dashboard, and the poor quality factory stereo.
I used to drive quite a few of these both saloon & Weekend when I used to drive down the docks at Portbury Nr Bristol when they were new off the ship , I found them ok cars .. I will admit I preferred the 2.4 JTD even tho it was on 6hp reduced that in a Alfa Romeo 156 it was so marginal .
Where does the 166 pre-facelift rust? I have one from 2001, and im too affraid to take off the side skirts and look. But the bottom of the car looks perfectly fine and rust-free
What happened to all of them, did they all rot? My dad used to have a 1.8 elx and I loved it as a kid my grandma used to have a 1.6 sx too... such pretty cars.
I remember the regatta weekend It’s a shame not many people buy fiats now Iv owned 5 unos And a dht croma If the rust had been treated at the time it wouldn’t be as bad
Fiat's do hide their rust/rot well from the outside. I had a 2001 Punto Mia from new as my "workhorse"/daily driver keeping my Porsche for the weekend. At 83K it looked immaculate but for the 2018 & 2019 MOT's it needed welding to the floor which shocked me as it looked so well. The prospect of further welding for the October 2020 MOT & the usual electric power steering ( 4th in 17 years) meant it was uneconomical to repair. Was so sad to see it go to scrap.
It really is beyond me why people bother bodging up rust with filler/newspaper/expanding foam etc just to hide it. It only gets worse and hiding it from the mot man won't fix anything. If they are that worried about it then get it treated/welded in the early stages and nip it in the bud. I guess the person who did it had a tame mot tester as I don't think one worth their salt would pass it when bodged up like it once was
Generally theyre not bodging with the intention of keeping the car though. I reckon they just want 12 months ticket on it to sell on so no longer their problem then.
@@fatwalletboy2 That's right, but it doesn't make it right and no decent tester should pass a vehicle bodged up with filler and newspaper in the first place. Tapping it with a screwdriver usually gives a good idea if it's innocently undersealed or filler, newspaper and underseal!!
my next dooor neighbour had the 2.4 HLX with full leather interior. I made him promise to sell it to me when he came to change it. The one day i came home and there was a brand new Honda Jazz on his drive. When i asked where the Marea was he told me the Honda salesman said no one wants them and he offered him 400 quid for it. I nearly throttled him. It was one owner, 50000 miles with a full dealer history. He thought he got a great deal...
That rust damage looks severe and the strucural integrity of the car is affected by it. If there is no emotional value connected to it, get the parts out of it and give it to the junkyard.
I had one and loved it. Engine (2.0 20v) was smooth and powerful, but the handling was a bit woolly for a car that invited you to be a bit of a speed demon. Can still feel the buzz of redlining that engine. Overtaking was a dream, it just took off when asked. Well over the ton top speed.

It rains a lot in the UK. Probably these cars are in better condition in southern Europe. I own a 147 and I bet it's not so rusted, but climate in eastern Spain isn't that extreme.
@@jonpeley I live in Italy and "modern cars" haven't rust (or so much as those) but obviously rain and salt makes life much more difficult
Would be nice to save it. Very rare car in the U.K. Shame our climate accelerates rust so badly
In Brazil we had the Turbo 2.0 by Fiat
Awesome
I had a Marea 1.8 ELX in sedan form. It was very reliable, even the electrics. Nice design, it was like no other car on the road. The only issues were rattles on the dashboard, and the poor quality factory stereo.
I used to drive quite a few of these both saloon & Weekend when I used to drive down the docks at Portbury Nr Bristol when they were new off the ship , I found them ok cars ..
I will admit I preferred the 2.4 JTD even tho it was on 6hp reduced that in a Alfa Romeo 156 it was so marginal .
Had a 2.0HLX, sounded wonderful
The clocks/dials look like they are from a Daewoo Tacuma! Even though they came along a few years after the marea.
they may well be old stock sold to daewoo
@@ItaliaAutos That's a good point 👍 Thinking about it I believe Daewoo even got Vauxhall to supply them some parts, Zafira engines I believe
The dials reminded me of my -99 Opel Vectra
Most interesting feature-rear bumper was not showed...what a pity...
great cardesign to these days.
Yeah ment to feature it but I forgot.
@@ItaliaAutos a small video should make it..
Where does the 166 pre-facelift rust? I have one from 2001, and im too affraid to take off the side skirts and look. But the bottom of the car looks perfectly fine and rust-free
sills/inner and outter and rad support
@@ItaliaAutos sorry I don't know what that means.
Notice the Missing CD Player, you could get a Sony, JVC Alpine etc with CD Aux USB and even Bluetooth on some models
think they did a standard cd player too.
Italia Autos I’m on about it you were to fancy an audio upgrade
@@Busandtrainluvr2k oh yeah thats easy one to sort as standard iso stuff.
Had one til 2011, drove it over 350000km, never went down. Not a single spot of rust...
bet it wasnt in the uk lol
@@ItaliaAutos mostly driven in the alps and black forest. Some winters also slot in CZ and SK....
my fiat is a tank, it s holding up pretty good for a car this old
What happened to all of them, did they all rot? My dad used to have a 1.8 elx and I loved it as a kid my grandma used to have a 1.6 sx too... such pretty cars.
They just became expendable like most cars do after 10 years old
I love fiat
me too.
This could be a great car.
I dont understand how it got through its last MOT a car doesn't deteriorated that quickly.
As I said in the video it was all bodged to pass with metal plates abs silicone
I remember the regatta weekend
It’s a shame not many people buy fiats now
Iv owned 5 unos
And a dht croma
If the rust had been treated at the time it wouldn’t be as bad
this cars is very famous in brazil as a meme
meme/ disrespeck
Fiat's do hide their rust/rot well from the outside. I had a 2001 Punto Mia from new as my "workhorse"/daily driver keeping my Porsche for the weekend. At 83K it looked immaculate but for the 2018 & 2019 MOT's it needed welding to the floor which shocked me as it looked so well. The prospect of further welding for the October 2020 MOT & the usual electric power steering ( 4th in 17 years) meant it was uneconomical to repair. Was so sad to see it go to scrap.
linda cor não teve no brazil essa cor
it is a nice colour.
It really is beyond me why people bother bodging up rust with filler/newspaper/expanding foam etc just to hide it. It only gets worse and hiding it from the mot man won't fix anything. If they are that worried about it then get it treated/welded in the early stages and nip it in the bud. I guess the person who did it had a tame mot tester as I don't think one worth their salt would pass it when bodged up like it once was
it all comes down to £££. most people just dont want to spend it on fixing rust when it stops and does perfectly well.
@@ItaliaAutos I guess, but they clearly value a couple of hundred £ in the early days of the rust than their safety 🤷
Oh well, the mind boggles 😂
He thought he got a great deal...
aw man you missed out on a bargain.
Loved Marea. Don’t know why. Bland. But excellent. 155 2.0 amazing. 5 cyl. Croma mk2 total garbage.
Sad to see extent of corrosion
Fiat's estate cars are a bit of a rarity these days since the latest Croma, you know the so called "comfort wagon". 🤔
Out of curiosity Neil do you think this engine would bolt into an Alfa GT?
That rust damage looks severe and the strucural integrity of the car is affected by it. If there is no emotional value connected to it, get the parts out of it and give it to the junkyard.
Neil, do you know what ended up happening to this car?
It got sold and someone saved it but never seen it since .
Is that a Ford Escorrott rust mobile wagon...estate full of holes ?? With a fiat badge...
Good Morning. I need a part on this car. Can you help me?
Nope sorry I don’t do parts. Thanks for watching
So..... how many have just watched this vid and gone off wondering if a Busso would fit in one?
it would fit straight in its the ecu that would cause trouble.
did u save it?
It got sold on and new owner is saving it. That's all I know know
@@ItaliaAutos Ok! :)
i want to buy one... Marea owners what you have to say about this car? good and bad things
It's a very nice car, drives well, sounds nice, except when you get an electrical fault, you're in trouble... a lot of trouble.
I would love to make this beautiful girl mine what would be the full cost of getting it back to factory new and what would the owner want for it
owner should be along with a price.
This car has a terrible reputation in Brazil, too bad... it's a cool car.
It is for sale?
It is
@@ItaliaAutos seriously is very rare engine this car is 1999? 130 and 20V 155 Cv is very very rare driver lf and driver rg very rare Fiat engine is spettacular
Francesco Lardon it is for sale :) it’s a 1997 car actually, indeed very rare
Dad had one. Comfy back seats for me as a kid back in 2005 but I hated how it looked
The Stilo had an awful driving position which didn’t help. Had a 1.9jtd. Ok motor but made my knees ache driving it.
save the engin for a fiat coupe
Still plenty of these kicking about here where i live in Italy, ugly thing though. My Brother has the Brava, exact same color.
Cmon thats hardly a month of welding. Get yourself a MIG welder, a cutter, some new metal and work away.
What a shame, really...
For the amount of money to repair the rust, you can buy a very decent car, a 159 maybe?
this is more about the customer wanting to save a rare car. he also owns a 156.
@@ItaliaAutos that customer has excellent taste!
@@ItaliaAutos yes rare but I don't think anyone has a poster of this car on their wall, this car doesn't have any heritage or importance. I scrapped mine with out even thinking twice... If this car doesn't have any sentimental value it is destined to be scrapped sadly.
@@FrankishKnight That's not the point. Many people save cars just because it puts a smile on their face when they sit in it. Do people have posters of Rover 200/400/600/800/25/45/75, any Rover for that matter on their wall? Probably not, but many people out there still save them
grommash hellscream my family had a Marea Weekend when I was growing up, that’s why I bought this one. It looked really good and the sills were “bodged” solid so I took a gamble. I love the car and I would daily it happily but I caught it few years too late :(
Wow never seen such a poorly equipped HLX before!
Whip out the engine
death trap in an accident
at the moment it is.
Soo bad condition 👎
Scrapper
had the 1.6, one of the worse cars ever owned was reliable but rubbish to drive
to be honest i didnt like mine when i had it. engine was great just let down by a poor interior and handling
@@ItaliaAutos did yours have Sport pack ???
i have no idea.
i had one and found it great handlig car. imho far superior to golf mk3 for instance
I had a 1.6 Weekend, and it was a brilliant car; far better than the Sierra that replaced it!
