Sparks (the Mael brothers) have just released a new album, are touring Europe, and are as catchy as ever. You would never guess they were in their seventies!
Sparks are a total phenomenon in pop/rock history. Their work in the early to mid 70s completely paved the way for post-punk new wave in the 80s. Check out both of the albums they put out in 1974, Kimono My House and Propaganda. At the time, there was nothing like what they were doing!
Sparks. Just the right amount of weird for sure. My favorite band. Ever. Going to see them in NYC at the end of June. They hooked me when I was just 15 years old. Fifty years later I love them even more. The Mael Brothers = Sarcastic musical geniuses.
Great reaction to this brilliant tune Britt. I was 14 in '74 when it came out & was a huge hit in the UK. I had a similar reaction cos this was like nothing I'd ever heard before. Too strange for some but for me strange is good. Still going strong, releasing album 26 just last year too, even though the Mael brothers are in their 70s now. My all time favourite tracks are 'In the future' & 'Dick around' which I think you would absolutely go bonkers over!
I always liked weird music and remember this back when it first was released, the singer and keyboard player are brothers and still make music together today, oddball genius stuff, love them, anew genius is REN, try the tale of Jenny and screech, the full trilogy, 13 minutes of genius story telling it’s like Shakespeare set to modern rap, you’ll love it
Another unusual band of the day you could try is Sailor they use a big old Nickelodeon in a lot of their songs a type of hybrid piano/organ Panama being one of my faves from them
You should definitely watch the documentary film on The Sparks Brothers, both for more than a sprinkle of weird across their long career, and the number of very different artists who were all influenced by them
2 of the most talented brothers the pop/rock scene has ever seen: Russel Mael sings and brother Ron on keyboards. they've been on the music scene for 50 years - and still writes new music. good one at that 😄. Disco is prob the name of the tv-show they were on in this clip. they do mostly rock and/or pop although they did some disco or dance music, later on though. If u like quirky this is your new FAVOURITE band!😃
dont know how much of carrie underwood you've listened to, but would love to see some more of you reacting to her. you did her live performance of how great thou art. incredible talent and great songs there! She has so many the list is too long "Something in the water" video a must. her lives are always incredible too. one from a while ago is "blown away medley" where she does a few of her hits in the performance. other great choices: Love wins, little toy guns, the champion (great uplifter), temporary home(get you in the feels), see you again(another feels), heartbeat(good love song), church bells, cry pretty.... just endless lol
Just found your channel today and loving it. Love your reactions to great voices. Would like to suggest Marc Cohn's Walking in Memphis. Keep up the great content.
Brilliant as this is, it ain't disco! 🙄 You want disco (who doesn't?) try Native New Yorker (extended version) - Odyssey or I'm Every Women - Chaka Khan or Rock Your Baby - George McCrae. Three disco nuggets of gold right there. Enjoy
Disco is the name of the show in Germany. That's where there is the mix up. Living in the UK, our weekly music show was called 'Top of the Pops' which featured artists & songs that were big in the Charts at the time. It embraced Sparks & Disco artists as they were emerging at the same time in '74. I loved both but I never heard this song played in any discos,(although I'd be quite happy if they did). Sparks were the first rock band to go down the disco route with their '79 LP 'Number one song in heaven'. They teamed up with producer Giorgio Moroder having been blown away by Donna Summer's mega hit 'I Feel Love'. Its singles saw Sparks comeback to the UK top 10 again 5 years after 'This town' was a no 2 hit for 2 weeks. They've made numerous other wonderful dance tracks, but watch the movie 'The Sparks Brothers' for a history catch up.
Especially two albums from the 70s holds many good songs: " Kimono my house" and "Indiscreet" but their latest song released this month (!) is quite OK: The girl is crying in her latte. Keeping to their unique style. The group has been consisted by the brothers Ron & Russel Mael since the start in California in 1968. To understand the background you need to listen to some Frank Zappa, Beach Boys and Doors from the same time. Although they were more popular in Europe.
The Sparks is one of all time favs, and I like you too. Not the weird way, okay just lil' weird, but still. The producer behind boht, Donna Summer and the later disco stuff for this very band, Sparks, was nothing less but Giorgio Moroder. RIP Donna Summer, but the Sparsks still are most very around, check em' out!
I’m a new sub from your reaction to Tom MacDonald, your love of fashion had me. I’m here not only for the reaction to the music, but for the costume and fashion as well.
Hello Brit ! I am a new subscriber and wanted to tell you that I like your reactions all very much... recently I "stumbled" across your reaction to "Texas flood" by Stevie Ray Vaughan and since then I deceided to subscribe and watch some other of your reaction videos regularly. I wanted to recommend a new artist to you, since I saw that you haven't reacted to her yet. Her name is Eivor, she is from the Faroe Islands and a classically trained soprano . I want to higly recommend to react to her song "Falling free - Live at the Old Theatre in Torshavn" ! I am sure you'll be very impressed with her voice and her capabilities. Best wishes from Germany : Gerry
Fantastic song but you should always check the lyrics on Sparks songs they are so clever and funny. Ron Mael is the keyboard and writes all their songs .
Great cult/underground band with a lot of cool songs. "Over The Summer", "Looks, Looks, Looks", "Wonder Girl", "Girl From Germany", "Sexton U.S.A." just to name a few. I wouldn't consider this disco by any means although they have a couple of songs that might be considered dance era.
No this is not Disco, the show is called Disco I believe. This is almost Glam rock although Sparks were a little different. They had a song in the Disco era called Beat the clock although this was at the start of the Electro pop era.
It's all going, nicely, to plan.😁 As one of your first Subscribers, I predicted that with your modern looks, fun personality, and intelligence then you HAD to reach 100,000 Subscribers in, almost, record RUclips time and that is, exactly, what is happening, providing you don't do the Internet equivalent of "Don't Bump Into The Furniture" so well done.
It's disco yes but I call it disco with a teachno twist, an Alice in wonderland twist, fun crazy with a maddening beat, I love it I love it I love it 🖖🖖🖖
"khaki-coloured bombardier", not "bum" Is this disco? This is Sparks. One aspect of Sparks. This was their first hit. Please do their newest song "The Girl is Crying in her Latte" next.
These guys could take the genius of Bohemian Rhapsody and make it last for an album side. They are releasing #25 in July, titled The Girl is Crying in her Latte. Their fan base is rabid about them. Did you catch any of the lyrics here? This is about as far away from DISCO as you can get.
Sparks answer to 'Bohemian Rhapsody' is one of their finest rock tunes, the manic & outstanding 'Dick Around'. I still believe that one day it will be a huge hit for them. If someone uses it properly in a Netflix drama somewhere it'll take off like Kate Bush's 'Running up that hill' or Sophie Ellis Baxter's 'Murder On The Dancefloor' have done, years after their release.
Hi Britt you may care to review this video ruclips.net/video/eLGypYmmweY/видео.html … a very young Andrea Bocelli & Zucchero singing Miserere. Do a little background research about what lead up to this pairing.
Sparks (the Mael brothers) have just released a new album, are touring Europe, and are as catchy as ever. You would never guess they were in their seventies!
I LOVE seeing young people appreciate the genius of Sparks!!! ❤️
Sparks truly is a music lovers hidden band in a way...."All That" is one of theirs that got me through the pandemic tbh
Ron (keyboards) and Russell Mael (vocals) from LA, still at it today releasing new music, Ron still doing the look.
Saw them live in Brisbane Australia, they were fantastic
You also mentioned Donna Summer, check out Sparks No.1 song in Heaven (1979) both done with Giorgio Moroder.
great suggestion, super song, underrated band- very special!
Sparks are a Pop Rock band whose genres include: Art Pop,Art Rock,Glam Rock, electronic, Synth-pop & New wave
Sparks are a total phenomenon in pop/rock history. Their work in the early to mid 70s completely paved the way for post-punk new wave in the 80s. Check out both of the albums they put out in 1974, Kimono My House and Propaganda. At the time, there was nothing like what they were doing!

I saw them in 1974 when this came out and I saw them again in 2017 and they are playing again this year. They have just never stopped making music.
This is not Disco. This... is SPARKS. 😂
Great reaction to this brilliant tune Britt. I was 14 in '74 when it came out & was a huge hit in the UK. I had a similar reaction cos this was like nothing I'd ever heard before. I think 'Disco' in this case was the German TV show they were appearing on
You are gonna love this band.
Your favorite bands favorite band. Love Sparks since 1975
I always liked weird music and remember this back when it first was released, the singer and keyboard player are brothers and still make music together today, oddball genius stuff, love them, anew genius is REN, try the tale of Jenny and screech, the full trilogy, 13 minutes of genius story telling it’s like Shakespeare set to modern rap, you’ll love it
The video was done for a German pop video program in 1974....I think the audience weren't quite ready for the look....if you know what i mean
So revolutionary,when released.
This is not disco it is progressive glam art pop rock!
Oh it's not disco - it's purely Sparks
It‘s taken from a famous German show called Disco - which played all sorts of pop and rock in the early 70s
Best ever British Band to come out of the U.S.
Thanks for this and nice to hear that you liked it. More information about Sparks can be found on the fanmael site.
Whatever you do, don't try to out-stare Ron on the keyboards. You'll never win lol
This be glam rock. Like Queen, who used to open for Sparks.
YES!! Please react to more Sparks, no two songs of theirs sounds alike, its all unique, interesting music.
BEST group on the world ❤❤❤
Hiya from across the pond in Yorkshire, England. Love ya, lady ! ❤
The one on the keys and singer are actually both brothers and American
I only ever bought one Sparks album, "The number one song in heaven". But I still like the title track, and" Beat the clock", etc.
They are timelessly wonderful. Always thought they were British, as they made their name first in the UK.
Singer and key board player are brothers
It's always a joy seeing people reacting to Ron for the first time. Just as planned.
Not disco. Just the name of the TV show. 1974 UK #2. IIRC two Americans recording in the UK at the time.
Brilliant reaction Britt, to one of my favourite bands of the 70's. Definitely not 'Disco' though
They have an even better track called Dick Around
Another unusual band of the day you could try is Sailor they use a big old Nickelodeon in a lot of their songs a type of hybrid piano/organ Panama being one of my faves from them
In 1974 our local nespaper wrote that this song was the summer's biggest thing after uncle Ben's barn fire 😛
Queen's style !!
No, queen took sparks style. Sparks have been around longer and Queen were a support band for them in 1973. 👍
@@johnwalsh128 All right !
You should definitely watch the documentary film on The Sparks Brothers, both for more than a sprinkle of weird across their long career, and the number of very different artists who were all influenced by them

"Something in the water" video a must.

Brit: Thank you for putting a spotlight on an underrated band. Your comments were on point.
Just found your channel today and loving it. Love your reactions to great voices. Would like to suggest Marc Cohn's Walking in Memphis. Keep up the great content.
Damn..the growth of your channel is insane. Congrats

& still putting out ultra-cool stuff!
You should react to Alyssa lies. It is emotional.
Ahh but there is a cover of this from a British band and it takes this to another level 🙂
Especially two albums from the 70s holds many good songs: " Kimono my house" and "Indiscreet" but their latest song released this month (!) is quite OK: The girl is crying in her latte. Keeping to their unique style.

I’m a new sub from your reaction to Tom MacDonald, your love of fashion had me. I’m here not only for the reaction to the music, but for the costume and fashion as well.
Disco was in the title of the show. This song's style is definitely not disco. More like a quirky early 70's glam/prog rock mixture.
Nice react!

Not disco .... yet, they used Donna Summers producer though in the 80's and did disco type songs. This is a bit early for disco.

I think this recording was done in Germany and the keyboard player does look like Adolf Hitler with that little moustache lol.
No love this is not bloody disco it is art rock
Sparks was never disco
The kind of strangeness and uniqueness so sadly missing from music these days.
