I always appreciated how they went about making Kabru's party threatening despite being a joke up until now. Specifically I mean that I like that it was never a matter of incompetence, it was just a difference in skill-set. Like Kabru says, killing people is MUCH easier for him that monsters because he knows how to fight people. Monsters are all varied in behaviour and biology, so he has no idea what to really be doing against them.
Basically, we've been seeing them get party-wiped because they AREN'T a PvE party. They're a goddamn PvP party.

"They are a PVP party" is a really nice summation of what I was thinking on commenting.
And it is linked to the fact that Kabru acts as the people's person foil to Laios' monster nerd. Kabru loves people in kind of the same way Laios loves monsters: he likes observing their behaviour and dissecting how they work (but is more into politics, history and social interactions than anatomy per se, though he is not too shabby at that too as you can see in his fight).

lmao I like how Kabru is so clever about reading people, but he also just completely misses how Laios was clearly getting shafted by others because he's too kind and generous for his own good. Kabru can't fathom someone being just a genuinely good person who has trouble noticing when they're being taken advantage of.

I believe Kabru simply correctly identifies that Laios has no interest in seeing through other peoples lies. Something a king certainly should be able to do. Therefore deeming him unfit to be King as long as he is unable or uninterested in deducing peoples motives behind the honeyed words they speak.

    • @Storse

I mean that's why kabru doesn't think laios is fit to be the Lord, he's too easy to be taken advantage of and doesn't care about or particularly like humans.

what i really like too is that kabru doesnt just kill these guys and lay them somewhere, he kills them and then the party DUMPS THEM IN THE WATER. tonsu specifically said earlier that they'd be fish food if they stayed in the water. so they're killing these people with the intent of them staying dead permanently.
Also, i think kabru still sort of gets laios. but its exactly that laios' inability to deal with people that makes kabru believe he's not fit.

my interpretation is that Laios' group is unusually good at killing monsters for such a small group, getting very far into the dungeon due to foraging and hunting along the way, whereas Kabru's group - while they view the dangers of the dungeon almost as a distraction and get constantly blindsided and cut down for it- is much better against human opponents. it reflects the outlook of the two group's leaders very well.

Kabru really is a splendid foil for Laios.
Obsessed about people instead of monsters, and completely lacking in interest (and consequentially knowledge) about monsters. A socialite who can communicate so smoothly with people it's a legitimate weapon and pays such close attention that he can identify them hiding under monster forms.
Honestly, he isn't wrong about Laios being a poor king either. My guy could be conned by children, and that's real bad for a leader of a country. Kabru might be a bit too stone cold for the job as well, but maybe he would make an ideal minister or advisor position.

  • @U.Inferno

When I watched this episode with my friends we were genuinely shocked at how callous Kabru's slaughter of the corpse runners were. Like there were many parts where we'd think "Okay, you've made your point, you can stop now" and they kept going. Like just killing them? Sure. They'd to restrain them I guess and with the immortality spell on the dungeon, they'll be fine. They then execute the last guy even when they have the numbers advantage? Jesus. Bit much, but maybe they can't feasibly keep him alive for long without constant watching. Then dumping their corpses in the water to be irretrievable was where we all got "What's your fucking goal here?"
It's not a criticism of the narrative, but that was our train of thought regarding the extra-judicial retribution that could have feasibly been resolved far more peacefully. Especially watching the party feel heroic for the entire endeavor when those of us watching saw what we considered a sensible resolution that could have resulted in 0 deaths while still punishing corpse runners. It was just one of those "Jesus fucking christ" moments for us.

What I like about Dungeon Meshi characters is how much they can contradict each other and it's so human, and it's everybody, from the obvious like Kabru and Chilchuck, Marcille and to even sweet baby Falin. It doesn't demonize them because that's just what it means to be human, to survive and to desperately care for someone.

i also like how kabru makes for an excellent foil when it comes to monster fights. with the sea serpent, his first train of thought was hitting the carotid artery, but when he realized he doesn’t know where it is, he is left absolutely vulnerable. kabru prob treats every fight as he would a human, on the other hand our autistic boy is knowledgable and versatile, but he sucks at reading humans -p-
    kabru does pvp
    laios does pve
interestingly i also learned recently that kabru is using something called the half sword technique by holding his blade at the half point, it was really awesome having someone point this out to me, ive never seen this anywhere else i think??

  • @DainnGreywall
    @DainnGreywall 5 месяцев назад +11

Kabru works as a really good opposite to Laios in how where Laios is awful with people but excels at monsters, Kabru is the complete opposite in that he is a master manipulator and a good judge of people through his own albeit pessimistic point of view (Not to mention he's possibly even autistic and hyper-focused on people as a straight foil to Laios and learned how to mask it where Laios is...well... not that good at masking it). Where Laios in ways loves the dungeon and wants to explore the monsters within it to understand (and taste them) Kabru thinks of the dungeon as a problem to be solved and utterly removed immediately. Not to mention the way that the two move and fight. Laios is a big, armored, stocky and frankly lumbering goofy oaf whereas Kabru is cold, calculated, agile and fast.
Also Chilchuck being an old-guard union representative and Mickbell being a pissy little scab is absolutely hilarious to me.

    (SPOILER FREE!) / i think........
Tade - fun fact is an ogre! (somewhat of an onii yes), i personally dont know the reason but her face looks more ''human'' than other ogre's. Usually they have a wide nose bridge and fangs.
Maybe its a detail in Tade's design because it makes her face looks more naive and kind that way / i think/ with big eyes a huge smile :], she also lacks fangs.🤔
They are a human race, so they too have the same weak points as Kabru said.
The reson why Tade was hungry earlier than other might be because ogres have a strong appetite! The said appetite also keeps their strenght.
Tade is 17 years old which makes her a teen in tall-men years ,!but! ogre's age of maturity is 15 years because they are a short lived race like half-foot, whose age of maturity is 14!
They also reside in that world's analog of Japan! They take up a very small amount of population AROUND THE WORLD being only 5%.

There is a small mistranslation in the dub that i dislike very much. Here, Kabru states that "HUMANOIDS" have the same weak points. However he should have stated that "HUMANS" have the same weak points, since in this setting, multiple races are considered human. The Toudens, Kabru, Shuro, and Rin are a race called Tall-men. I find this is a really unique and interesting way to frame fantasy races. Especially since, in some supplementary material, it is questioned who gets to be considered human. Orcs and Kobolds are considered demi-human and in different cultures, only Tall-men are considered human.

    • @ViashinoWizard

I would say Humanoids is fine, Humanoids would include Orcs, Kobolds, Fishmen, which are considered Demi-Humans and its clear Kabru can handle those types of enemies, but within this world they arent what people call human. so him saying Humanoid as a reference to both Demi-Humans and the Major Human races works.

    • @dann4044
      @dann4044 5 месяцев назад +11

      BIG SPOILERS for the manga
Yea, Kabru really is just a friendly little guy. In the manga, he is presented with a situation almost exactly as Skyen makes where the elves come and could capture and imprison or kill Laios's party. Kabru makes the calculation that this would be for the best because the elves at this point have defeated the dungeon lord and would easily clear the dungeon. This way, the monsters could no longer overrun the city. Instead, Kabru chooses to oppose the elves even though this risks the dungeon growing out of control because he is not okay with just letting Laois and his party be destroyed that way. He literally "goes back down the dungeon to save his friend" as Skyen says he wouldn't do. He even eats monsters while doing this.
Everybody hates Kabru when he first shows up, but he really comes out as a great guy and character. The "I'm a Machiavellian genius manipulator" is a mask that he not only puts on, but one he believes himself. My reading is that his own party knows he's just a friendly little guy before he knows himself, which is why they follow him.
Edit: I think it's pretty funny how people are angry at Kabru for judging Laios's party without knowing them yet when that is what is exactly happening to Kabru by the audience.

I think the disappearing sparkles and bubbles represent them breaking the curse and freeing everyone from the dungeon's downward spiral. Because in regards to what you were talking about last episode, I firmly believe that while the dungeon structure can stay just fine.... the immortality spell must be broken. It is only trapping and hurting people. The monsters are getting out more and more, causing more suffering for surrounding villages. This has to end. The Mad Mage's rejection of the march of time is unnatural, and helping no one.
I mean, Kabru's team was said to be one of the better ones still together.
"Stick a fork in him and don't take him back upstairs?" You're getting a lot of good calls this episode.
At first I was disappointed that Kabru didn't hit the guy with the flat of the trident to haul their unconscious selves topside for punishment, but that's a lot of dead weight you have to actively supervise and contain. Still, very harsh frontier vigilante justice.
Yeah, Kabru is right that the curse might end... but looting guys who were trying to off you is fair game in my book.
I'm curious if the Elves taking over would actually be as bad as people think. Or could things get much worse than expected? Only time will tell.
Well Marcille did say that hair is a magical conduit, so the twirling might be helpful for stirring up the magic, which would make sense as a nervous habit. That or it's a more normal habit.
Well... there was that bit with Laios' flashback of Fallin saying it was too dangerous to follow her, so there miiiiggghhhht be something there. Also, I'd say we know Marcille as out of her element more than a goob. But it is very much from Kabru's perspective.
Speaking of perspective, dispatching monsters this efficiently can often be potrayed as cool since we're rooting against abominable animals. But this.... this is going against people. But I'd like to think that sweet pretty boy isn't entirely a mask, so much as a selectively polished and angled facet. Makes the cold blooded side all that much scarier if his affable charm is neither in conflict with his cold efficiency, nor an act.
Not just a rank and file Samurai. He'd need some pull to have an entourage come all this way.
Sounds like Laios and Fallin got taken advantage of.
There are different scales of leadership. Someone made to lead a squad shouldn't lead a nation, and vice versa. There can be overlap, but different groups and group sizes have different needs of leadership.
I was expecting more disappointment from you at the base animeisms of the skimpy ninja girls and the lack of leg protection on Tade. It reallyl feels like a step down in character design quality. I like the feather patterning on the priestess(?)' sleeves, and the cat being buttoned all the way up is nice, but the other 3 need to commit to their roles. High contrast exposed skin doesn't help masters of survival and stealth. Exposed legs are terrible on a frontline fighter who can afford to be equipped with proper armor. Heck, even some leather coverings over pants would at least increase protection. Though reforging the royal guard armor scraps from a few floors up would certainly make for some nice upgrades to Tade's and Shuro's armors.
Also, if Shuro had this backup he could call upon, I must again ask why he didn't go with Laios. About the only option I can think of is whisking Fallin away to his land without consideration for her friends and family, but that would be an extreme d!c# move. Though if, as I suspect, he is from upperclass aristocracy of a Shogunate style nation, it would be depressingly in form.
Shuro didn't go back to his home island, he brought this retinue with him to the dungeon's island when he first got here.
If we're talking national level, making hard decisions is something you have to be prepared for.
47:37 Looks like the very same elves from the first OP. Unless shirtless with that design of back tattoos is common for elf men.
Now why would Fallin be associated with all that ice and snow?

Not getting into spoilers but I will just say: everything Kabru shows us about himself is true to himself.
Also, @3BSkyen, sorry, but Tade is a minor

It's been a while now since the last react to Delicious in Dungeon. Curious as to why that's the case? I guess it's too much of a hassle to struggle with the copyright claims on this particular series? Or maybe just general loss in interest in the anime?

Now seems like a good time to bring up that Tade (the ogre) is canonically 17.
