    Learn more about the music:
Soumik Datta is a sarodi from the younger generation, describing himself as ‘a slave to the instrument’. He trained under the late maestro Buddhadev Das Gupta, flying to Kolkata for periods of intense study during his holidays from boarding school in the UK. Today he plays a vast range of styles - jazz, Indo-blues, drum’n’bass, and many more. But he always returns to his classical core, performing Hindustani music around the world.
Raag Durga is a spacious, folksy raga, intended for the hours just past midnight. It is named after an incarnation of Hinduism’s supreme goddess, and uses five notes from Bilawal thaat (Western major scale), ascending as SRmPDS and descending as SDPmRDS. The vadi [king note] is Dha, and the samvadi [queen note] is Re, with Ga and Ni being varjit [forbidden]. It is similar to Carnatic Raag Shuddha Saveri.
Recorded for Darbar on 25 Oct 2018, at London’s Barbican Centre
    -Soumik Datta (sarod)
    -Sukhwinder Singh ‘Pinky’ (tabla)

What a lilting light touch Mr. Datta seems to have on the sarod. He makes it look so easy and joyful while playing deep, exquisite melodies. That was superb.

Excellent rendition by Soumik Datta. I feel sad to see that videos of Indian Classical Music have so less views while rubbish videos of modern songs and of jokes fetch millions of views. It is very unfortunate that most Indians have forgotten their rich cultural heritage and started copying Western music. The Westerners never copy us, then why should we copy them. We should feel ashamed. In many European countries, it is seen that people there are more interested in our music than we are. Let's popularise Indian Classical Music more and make it reach greater heights of glory!

I listen to this piece everyday. One of the best renditions of Durga. Lifts the consciousness to a higher level, almost samadhi state.
