So in case you forgot (or if you purged it from your, memory, sorry) there was this game called Underworld Ascendant made by the literal inventors of the Immersive Sim, Warren Spector and Paul Neurath, which is easily the worst immersive sim that shall likely ever be made. How is that you ask? Well when Neurath and Spector got together to make their studio, Otherside Entertainment, they decided that the best course of action was to have a Kickstarter as it was the fashion at the time and then have a go at it on thier own without the help of a publisher... that is until they brought in 505 Games as a publisher when they were a year past the initial release window with the game nowhere near being done.
In the end they rushed to make the Christmas 2018 sales window which horribly backfired as what they had contained AWFUL gameplay, a boring and vague story told by audio diaries, and a game so glitchy that I'm not even sure Unfinished is the right word. Seriously, some reviewers reporting falling though the map and ending up in the final level of the game while they were still on level 1.

Since enough of you are curious, here's a copy/paste of my comment on me announcing the takedown of the old video to clue you in:
Due to me at one point having two different videos planned both revolving around Otherside Entertainment, I erroneously asserted that Warren Spector was with the studio from the start which is not the case as he joined on when System Shock 3 started.
    This came about because
    1) ironically enough I was crunching to get this out to you all as I'm still way behind thanks to taking those two months to move and ,
    2) I had originally planned to make two videos centered around Otherside Entertainment and at some point these two video merged into one video, but I eventually cut out all the system shock 3 stuff as I felt that it was too speculative. However, I failed to change out the parts of the intro and background which mentioned Spector and Neurath to instead just mention Neurath and that's where I made the errors.

It's on the shelf for now as details are just a little too muddy for me to say anything. Unlike the bioshock 4 video, there's no leaks, interviews of devs, or even press statements for me to go off. All we know is that at one point there were a ton of layoffs and the game was dead on the water for a hot minute before Tencent swooped in. That's not enough to make a video on.

The moral at the end about remembering game developers in their prime rather than looking at what they make now kind of breezes past the reality that this is the career of these people and they can't just stop working at age 30.

    • @Shenaldrac
      @Shenaldrac 8 месяцев назад +1

If they had been working in the industry this entire time then wouldn't they know how things are these days though and be capable of producing a decent product? If it's their career, how did they become so bad at it? The only thing I can think of that makes sense is that they fell out of the video games industry for a decade+ and came back to it for this game, and then were completely out of their depth. A lot like the Star Citizen guy.
These people, as I understand it, have careers in programming or sound design or stuff like that. Those are marketable skills outside the games industry and I think it likely that that's what happened, they spent a long time not making video games and applying their skillset in a different industry and came back thinking everything would be the same, and it wasn't.

    • @pretzelboi64
      @pretzelboi64 8 месяцев назад +4

@@Shenaldrac The real mistake they make is trying to make a "modern" game instead of giving their fans what they want: an old school game with QoL improvements. They merely had to stick to what they are good at.
Best example: DJ Seduction, an older DJ from the 90's, did this with breakbeat hardcore and after 3 very successful kickstarters, he delivered 3 albums that sounded like they were made in his prime. He made money and everyone who liked his old stuff was very satisfied. He didn't try anything fancy or new; he literally reused the same old synths, samples, and techniques

    Dear crowdfunding game devs,
Stop thinking your game will be done on time and giving what you think are realistic completion dates. You're wrong. Your game will never be done on time. Take whatever time you think you need and double it at least. Have THAT be your release goal. If you think your game will be done in 2 years, say it'll be done in 4. What's the worst that'll happen? The game ends up being late anyway? Well that's no worse than if you said 2 years, it's better even because needing 5 years to make a game after telling people you need 4 will go over MUCH better than telling people you need 5 years after initially saying 2. And at best case you really DO finish the game before the ETA and get to release it "early" which will probably earn you major PR cred.
Your game will never finish in 1-2 years. Accept it, admit it, and base everything on that.

Charting "difficulty" in regards to making games is complicated to say the least, but as awkward Unity can be to work with, I'm certain it's worlds easier than making something like System Shock (which had by far the most advanced renderer, physics system, etc of the time), in 1994. Something clearly went, really, really wrong during development. My feeling (based on what I see here, not any behind the scenes knowledge) is that they made the common modern mistake of thinking they can cut the numbers of programmers for the project, instead leaning on "easy to use" engines and visual scripting languages, forgetting that those tools only make building *prototypes* faster and cheaper. You still need to put the work in for a full game.
Evidence for this is how many corners they cut that could have been entirely solved by a single coder sitting down for a couple of hours, like that looted chests aren't stored in your save file. In fact, the game shipped essentually with out any saving whatsoever, forcing you to restart the entire level if you quit and 'reload', even if you've placed a respawn point. Makes me wonder if they had any dedicated programmer on their team, rather than some overworked designer frantically googling basic code tutorials. This isn't an insult or anything, I geninunely suspect that might be the case.
Also, judging by when System Shock 3 was announced, along with trailer dates it seems pretty much certain that they were working on the two games in parrallel. It's pretty clear that this project got little love and was a holdover to keep the studio alive during SS3 development. It failed, and now they are owned by Tencent. None of this bodes well for SS3.

protip for cooking rice cause it's glossed over:
Wash your rice by putting it in a pot with some cold water and stirring it with your hand. You notice the water goes all white and ugly, that's all the extra starch and bits that make rice nasty.
Gently pour out as much of nasty water as you can and repeat the washing until water is decently clear.
Once you gotten rid of all the wash water as you can, add enough water to the pot until the water comes above the rice by 1 finger knuckle. Make sure rice is actually level.
Once that done, put the cold water with rice on high heat, salt it and cook it until it boils. Then turn down heat to very low, cover it and let it sit covered for 12-15 minutes. The residiual heat will gently cook and steam the rice. Once the time is up, fluff the rice up with a fork.
Here you go, the only correct way to cook the rice.

Played UU1 and 2 back in the day, some of my favorite games ever. There was no question I would be backing this, in case something of value came out of that. It did not. I played UA for about 2 hours before giving up and deinstalling it. Many things to say, but just the idea that you do some "mission" in some instance with item and enemy respawn is already killing it for me. For me, the essence of UU was that your actions cause persistent changes - from picking up a plant to exterminating a whole race in the underworld.

Same here. No NPCs, no Story, but meaningless fetch quests and a game show host telling you how to play the game... the "collector box" (plain dvd case plus plain sleeve with same cover art) went straight to bin.

Not gonna lie, you discovering jank in some cases is interesting gameplay. I love Ultima so this game makes me sad. You're right about "emergent" gameplay being instructed and repeated until it's anything but emergent. That seems to be a pattern and I think it's a mistake: feats and their rewards can be looked up like numbers in a phone book, the versatility bonus is linear and not context dependent, missions are simple - and if they weren't the game would helpfully provide a detailed and comprehensive list of "mission solutions and optional secret objectives". Even the UI is no longer a series of bags and paper scrolls, it's an abstract menu that constantly reminds you that you aren't inside the game world. Small mercy there. I like their ambition for emergent and might/magic/stealth gameplay, the feat system, rune system, respawn system, mana motes, and more. Too bad they never got get close to making it work as well as it should have.

Like I commented in the original video, this goes to show how important understanding the current toolset and engine is.
General experience is important, but going in blind with general experience and expecting to be able to learn as you go with completely new engine and toolset didn't just mess up UA. It's messed up plenty of other products as well. It's the main reason for the state Yooka Laylee shipped in, for example. Sometimes it's fine if the experienced developer is partnering with a younger dev who does actually know the tools and engine already. Sometimes it's fine if the experienced developer has already spent the time to learn the tools themselves. But just jumping in the deep end of what is suddenly an ocean instead of a pool is not a good idea.
And I guess I need to reiterate my personal experience with this project: Most of the projects I've backed range from brand new classics (Crypt of the Necrodancer, Shovel Knight, Freedom Planet) to merely disappointing (Starbound, Broken Age), to exploding trainwreck because it turns out the conductor is a pyromaniac (Yogventures, Shroud of the Avatar). For some reason UA is one of the games where I'm still in shock as to how badly it turned out.
Personally, I play a lot of Skyrim mods. And if they had started UA as a Skyrim mod it would have worked. Skyrim already has a lot of stuff that is basically identical to the Underworld games and what isn't the same is better: physics, AI, dialogue, quests, combat, and arguably even magic (with the right mods). Maybe starting with a licensed engine like Skyrim wasn't an option, or maybe the team just badly underestimated how much they could do with the new tools and engine. Or, maybe they realized too late that their engine just wasn't right for the job and they didn't have the option to start over.
As an Indie developer, I always try to make my game fit the engine I'm working with. From QBASIC to RPG Maker 2000 to DarkBASIC to GameMaker to App Game Kit to Godot, it's just easier to actually make something when you understand the limits of the tools. And once you understand all the limits, then you can push the limits if you want. And maybe I'm reading too much into it, but UA absolutely seems like something that was made by people who promised something they didn't realize was simply beyond the limits of what they were working with.

I knew it was going to be terrible just by watching the devs round up sessions, there was zero passion for it. There was this dev I remember, from his slips in faqs, which really emanated " I wanted to be working instead on some mobile trash in blizzard and buy a porsche". I mean its a Immersive sim, probably the hardest type of genre to make, it requires either full passion behind it. No matter what people say of beth up until skyrim, there was some effort in them.

the sheer amount of wasted delicious butter and delicious shrimp liquid,,, NOUGHT!!!! :cries in third world economy:
shrimp is a very delicate protein, so you have to be gentle with it -- funny how gentle actually means EXXXTREME HEAT so you can get it to crisp and become golden before it releases all its moisture in a watery mess. For that, you'll want to not have more than 1 layer of shrimp, or that all the shrimp is constantly touching the pan; pile it up and the shrimp will steam rather than fry. so my tip is frying the shrimp in two or three batches if they're gonna be stacked up otherwise.
anyways yummy unexpected pleasant recipe now im hungry :back to the video:

This. I was not only confused by a bunch of articles bringing him up but I also had another video involving Otherside and Spector I was making that briefly merged with this one but towards the end of production I removed the elements of the other video. However, Spector was fully involved with Otherside until System Shock 3 was announced and only consulted for Underworld Ascendant, so I removed referenced to him being the lead dev as that was outright wrong.
