When you see this charming real woman, unaffected by fame, and then watch her performance in Sunset Boulevard, it's a revelation.

This is great. Where did you find it? Sadly there were many things like this locally in the 50s & 60s. I'm sure most if not all are lost (I remember Francis X Bushman introducing Ben-Hur). This is great. Brings back many memories of long conversations with her & Bill.

Madame Swanson... You are so lovely. I miss you. I think you must have known or met many times..my Father and Mother. Your era. My Mom was 40 when I was born...my Dad was 60. So he was born in 1894. Mother in 1914. I think maybe you can see this from beyond on the other side. And Everyone went to my Dad's Hotels..all of Hollywood back in that day. 3 of them were in close proximity to where you lived on the NE corner of Sunset & Beverly. My parents and I lived a block up the street from you.. on Bev Drive...NW corner of Beverly & Lex. (Lexington) The Hollywood Roosevelt Hotel, The Miramar Hotel in Santa Monica and The Arrowhead Springs Hotel, Lake Arrowhead, where all the A-Listers Rendezvoused. You had to have met Thomas E. Hull.. of Hull Hotels...probably many times over 50 years and no doubt at the Hotel El Rancho Vegas, the first hotel on the Strip on Dad's land, his idea and the El Cortez Hotel downtown...The Thunderbird & the Last Frontiere,.. no doubt you stayed at the El Rancho.

A legend of an artist commenting on her art. In such a candid, uncomplicated manner. She speaks to the audience with an aire of confidence that she considers them up to the task. She doesn’t humor or snark at her audience. She doesn’t talk down to the viewer. Marvelous.

It amazes me that it still exists. Let me ask you this. About 2 or 3 years ago when I first discovered YT, there was a 10 minute excerpt of Gloria performing her own musical version of Sunset Blvd. from the 1950's. I think it may have been from a Steve Allen show. It was amazing. But eventually yanked from YT. Have you seen it?

She herself made this version of events irrelevant in her memoir Swanson on Swanson. She was actually persuaded to do this by Joseph Kennedy whose influence she had fallen under. She was apprehensive about Von Stroheim as he had a reputation for not respecting budgets or scripts.
The first intimation of what was to come was revealed when she saw the rushes of the first meeting of the prince and Kelly. The comedy consisted of the fact that Kelly lost her knickers. The prince laughed at her which enraged her and in her embarrassment she threw them at him. What she didnt see until seeing the rushes was that he caught them and subtly but unmistakeably passed them under his nose. Sniffing!
He went way over budget. Shooting the same scene 20 or 30 times without as far as she could see any noticeable difference. Things went from bad to worse and the tobacco/saliva dripping episode was so disgusting that she walked off the set. The nail in the coffin was the "dancehall" which was obvious as a sleazy brothel.
Over half a million dollars lost.

What I like is what a clever sequence of events she constructed. No mention of Kennedy. Focus on the money aspect, with the censorable portions being reduced to a waste of footage and time. The tobacco juice substituted for the panty-sniffing (a version of which Von S. apparently tried to persuade Wilder to include in Sunset Boulevard). Very unlikely anyone would want to remake it, since my understanding is that the plot involved basically a virginal woman (her loathsome husband having croaked on their wedding night, as in Von S's version of the Merry Widow) who is a powerful and wealthy madam of a chain of brothels in African ports, but who has kept her heart and body pure for the prince who first seduced her (or would have, if his main mistress, the queen herself, had not appeared with a bullwhip and evicted her from the palace; or did he?). I am sure scarlet Queen Kelly and the Prince would have reunited under the apple blossoms. Talk about fairy tales!
