  • My tribute to the wonderful movie "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" 1939 starring Chalres Laughton, Maureen O'Hara, Sir Cedric Hardwicke, Alan Marshal and Edmond O'Brien. Set to one of the most beautiful songs ever written - "Belle", the english version, from the musicl "Notre Dame de Paris".

It is absolutely amazing to me that this movie was made 72 years ago and Maureen O'Hara is still with us....God bless her!!

Best movie of the 30s. Extraordinary sets, gorgeous soundtrack, superlative acting, and perfect casting. Even the changes made to the book--a fantastic read--worked better for the film. Movie making at its very best. There are a half dozen scenes as good as anything ever put to film.

Lots of brilliant work doesn't get the awards. That yr Robert Donat got the Oscar for Goodbye Mr. Chips, a sentimental movie that audiences like. Greatness is often misunderstood. This is certainly a glaring case of exactly that. I watched a video in which a youngster put the 39 Hunchback v the Disney one and thought that Disney won. Most pple don't have the depth to appreciate greatness.

Maureen O'Hara, making her American debut here, could make men do such things; she was that lovely. Charles Laughton's performance is masterful, and a tip to one of the great character actors, Thomas Mitchell, who appeared in this one, "Stagecoach" and "Gone With the Wind", all in the same year.

I agree with you, I also prefer this version to the others. I think Maureen O'Hara's Esmeralda had what the others were lacking - innocence. Laughton was absolutely brilliant, couldn't imagine Quasimodo looking another way. I'm in awe of Sir Cedric Hardwicke's Frollo, and Alan Marshal made a great Phoebus.
I'm still curious about the Lon Chaney version, will be interesting to check it out.

Very good! Very very good!! I would have chosen to take these clips in the film chronically. But I have seen this movie 15-20 times, so for me it's no matter. I was thinking that chronological order would be better for those who haven't. Good music btw. I rely mean it.

About the vocalist, I know that the one to sing as Quasimodo is Garou, not sure about the priest, and Phoebus should be Patric Fiori.

An excellent song, with equally excellent editing...Looking back on the film, I believe of the four men who loved Esmerelda, Quasimoto was the truest...

That's how it is in the book; in fact, in the book, Quasimodo is the only man who actually loves Esmeralda at all:
Phoebus doesn't love her one little bit, he just tries to take advantage of her infatuation with him to get in her pants (and nearly succeeds). He doesn't care less when she dies.
Gringoire doesn't love her either and chooses to save her goat rather than her.
Frollo thinks he loves her, but it's basically sexual obsession, and when he gives her a choice between, to put it bluntly, letting him fuck her and being hanged and she still rejects him, he betrays her to the king's men who hang her.
Quasimodo, on the other hand, loves her unconditionally and asks her for nothing at all.

  • @LovesTigersandRock

A wonderful yet sad video. I have read the book and it seems that the black and white movies are the closest adaptations to Victor Hugo's masterpiece. I have seen many good movies made but none capture the heart wrenching affects like the book does. The second Disney movie is the only movie I have seen that Quasimodo actually gets the girl but as for being accurate it's the most far off lol. In my opinion they should make a new version pinpointing it to the book though it's a tragedy it is great

Only of old age presumably :-)
In the book, she does die, but not in the film. She rides off with Gringoire to live happily ever after. In the book Gringoire is far more in love with her goat than he is with her.

Just like in the book. Esmeralda was a french girl called Agnes that was stolen from her mother when she was a little baby and replaced with Quasimodo. Quasimodo was left in Notre dame cathedral.
