    It's not often you come across a fully functioning road bike frame that weighs only 0.715KG. With the Factor 02 VAM that is certainly the case. It will definitely be the lightest bike I have even ridden, once it's been built up. However, to get the ball rolling, in this video I will share with you three reasons I have have purchased this super lightweight climbing bike, when I don't consider myself a climber. Additionally I will share an update about the Winspace bike project.

    I liked this channel before, but you said you still want to ride time breaks...WOW.
    I love you for saying it.
    You pull the lever, they brake. You see the pads are worn...you replace them.
    Cables making issues...you replace them. That's it!
    No hydraulics, no melting aluminium, no squealing.
    I am sure disc brakes perform better, but for me rim brakes are good enough and everything (!) else just seems to be in their favor.

      @HolmsOnBikes 3 года назад +1

      I've had nothing but disc brake bikes for over 3 years now and I can't remember a single issue I've ever had. I honestly think it just comes down to you either have experience with them or you don't. If you have experience, discs are no more of a faff than rim brakes. But if you don't have any experience with them, its definitely very easy to mess something up/not set them up properly (like squeezing levers while wheels are out of bike, not using spacer block, etc.)

    I can give you some predictions based of my experiences.
    I found that racing crits on the a climbing bike I was actually working harder than I was on the standard crit pig (Giant TCR which really isn't a pig tbh). The loss of the extra kilo meant that I lost mass which result in a loss a momentum. Something extremely useful when rolling in the bunch. the momentum loss means you need have to surge and maintain that momentum or rubber band the whole race. you'll notice it.

      Update since changing my crank and tires/tube combination the weight difference is like about 2lbs. I have had this setup for months now but figured it would still be around the same weight.
      The actual difference I am feeling may be the weight distribution between the two bikes. It's like taking a heavy frame bike aka the allez and having light weight components vs supersix with a feathery light weight frame and light weight components. Even at "Similar weights" and components they are going to feel very different especially on hills/flats and sprinting. But... surely 2lbs is no big difference in an industry that says a $600

    The vision you have for the Factor O2 VAM is exactly what I want from a bike but the polar opposite of what is being offered by the vast majority of the market currently. Rim brakes because they’re light, simple, and they work well in Australian conditions. Lightweight because I know an extra 1-2kg will slow me down uphill and also the aero advantage of an aero bike is small. If 80% of CdA is the rider itself, not the bike, then wear a road suit for aero gains and keep the lightweight bike. Say the aero frame is 20% more aero than the lightweight frame, then 20% x 20% = only 4% improvement in the CdA if the overall bike/rider system. Not worth the weight penalty.

    • @Red-ju4mi
      @Red-ju4mi 2 года назад

      Even if rider %80 there's only so much position gains an amateur can make. And if you really cared about rider cda then you'd all be riding with aero bars. Which I even did in my gravel bike hah

    A light groupset for crit racing? Get a 1x Sram etap, Force or Red. With for example 48T up front and 10-33 at the back. No front derailleur, no cables, only one little battery and very clean and aero. The first six smallest cogs (the ones you need for crit racing) are very closely spaced and with the other six (wider spaced) cogs you have the gear ratios to climb most things at still a good cadence.

    If you're building up the Factor with a budget, SRAM Force AXS is a great groupset. The mechanical brake version can be picked up cheap and the parts have only a minimal weight penalty to RED. The bulk of the weight added with Force is in the cassette and crankset, which can be swapped for the lighter RED versions. Oh, I also use Dura Ace direct mount brakes on mine. The SRAM direct mount brakes are garbage. Stick with Shimano, or perhaps a boutique brand like EE. Looking forward to the build(s).

    Group set is a personal choice.
    I like the idea of Direct Mount rim brake callipers.
    As for Crit Bike v Climbing Bike, I would suggest its down to the correct wheel choice.
    In my opinion: the Factor Frame can be used for Crits & Climbs.
    I accept that most people now prefer Clincher Cabon rims, thats ok, but I prefer Tubular.
    For climbing Carbon tubular 30mm.
    For Crit Races Carbon tubular 50mm.
    On windy crit days you can use 30mm front 50mm rear for races.
    Another concern depending on rider weight & how hard you push your bike is the number of Sapin CX ray spokes & the right hub choice for each wheel.

    CAM, CAM, CAMMMMM...my mannnnnn. Lol. You HAVE GOT TO look into Tom Anhalt. He's an independent engineer that does tons of cycling testing/studies/ wind tunnel/you name it. He has proven over and over that the bike/ wheel weight that cyclists worry about doesn't matter at all (up until 10% grade). humans accelerate super slow in comparison to machines, cars, aerospace, etc. He has done testing where he has added an entire pound of weight to the rim and found it makes no difference up until a 10% grade. He even covers the exact thing you mentioned, surging out of a corner in a crit. Aero is 49 X more important than weight (again, up to a 10% grade). When accelerating in a crit, you aren't accelerating from a stand still, you're already moving...I might have explained it wrong but I just think it's crazy every point you mentioned is the exact stuff he covered in the podcast. I'm going to look for it and post it below. Lol.

      I think this comment makes a lot of sense. From what I remember of engineering principles, the aero part probably does more for you than weight from a balance of both factors. I mean most cyclists spend a whole lot more time cycling at their 80% limit than they do sprinting, even in crits. Personally, I feel it way more from headwinds than adding extra bottles or a bike lock or accessories.

      Cam don’t let this colour your upcoming videos. Look up the factor review by cycling tips recently. There factor explains that air attachment just does not happen before 40 kph and below that speed weight is more important in the flats as well. Above 40 aero becomes important. You should test at 30kph and 40kph to see how it goes.

    • @Jeppelelle
      @Jeppelelle 3 года назад +3

      @@RUclipsfana "There factor explains that air attachment just does not happen before 40 kph and below that speed weight is more important in the flats as well", you totally misinterpreted that article, just because the air doesn't attach doesn't mean air resistance isn't a factor or isn't important......f=ma, simple calculation & thanks to that; weight has almost no effect on top speed since weight only affects rolling resistance slightly & air resistance is by far the biggest force to overcome even at 20km/h, the breakover point is about 16km/h, take a fairly low speed of 30km/h, at that speed it takes 13.6N of force to overcome air resistance & only 4 for rolling resistance, if you add 26kg to your weight which is a massive weight gain, does the weight have a bigger effect than air resistance then? Nope, those 26 extra kg only adds 1N extra to the total force for the rider to overcome, who have a bike that weights 26kg more than the average?
      The difference between a 7kg bike & 10kg bike is 1.2w & you can save much more than 1w by being just slightly more aero, especially since air resistance increases squared while rolling resistance (weight) doesn't (linear). Weight is never ever in any circumstances more important than aero on flats, why did you even think that, you need to weight about 270kg for the weight to equal air resistance at 30km/h! Like, a simple logical example: why do you think time trial & triathlon riders uses those bikes which are heavier instead of a lightweight climbing bike? Yeah, because aero is always king on flats. As the other commenter said, weight is only a factor at 10% incline or more...also, look at sprint racers on velodromes, there is a reason they don't care about weight & only power...
      And for acceleration, the track must basically only consist of hairpin corners & no straights for weight to be more important than aero on flats
      Aero & weight have easy formulas, here is one tool to visualize it: www.gribble.org/cycling/power_v_speed.html
      This has been known for +40-50 years now, why is this still even a discussion?

    • @HolmsOnBikes
      @HolmsOnBikes 3 года назад

      @@RUclipsfana uhhhh, what? Anything above 15mph aero becomes more important than weight (up to 10% grade). Its literally not even a debate. Science is science. 49 times more important. Not 2 times, or even 10 times. 49 TIMES more important. That's beyond significant.

I have not raced for years but what i did find was on a TT or crit , aero & heavier wheels and to a lesser extent the frame,heavier is better because of momentum,allows you to build and maintain speed,quite different from climbing where lightness and acceleration is king(surprise).Hope to see update on Winspace soon.
