Great explanation of the rear brake unit, can't wait to see a full maintenance of the rear brake, the glide pins and stuff. Thanks as always my knowledge grows with your videos!
I've been watching all our ktm 390 videos and I don't even have one yet. I do plan on getting one soon. I will be able to work on the bike once I get it. Thanks for the videos
Hi David, thanks for the easy explanation. I was following you step by step but mistakenly I pressed the rear brake lever and now the piston moved to the farthest outermost position (almost no gap between the disc rotor and the piston), hence making it impossible to slide the new brake pads into their position. Could you please tell me how to move the piston back to its innermost original position so that I could install the pads. Thanks
Hola david! Quisiera saber si las tapas de metal que traen las balatas nuevas debe retirarse de las mismas? O se pueden instalar así? Las refacciones de BAJAJ, son compatibles con ktm y estas refacciones, las balatas traen una tapa metálica en la parte trasera
Still working towards it - waiting to get the 650 Bandit fuel issues sorted, can't have too many bikes in pieces at the same time - no more than three is my rule!
This is why you rock the caliper before removing, but even so sometimes you need more. If your piston is pushed out it sounds like the lever was moved with the caliper removed. You can get special pliers and tools to push the piston back. In an emergency get one or more pads back in and lever against the pad (pad against piston) to push the piston back in. If it needs cleaning it can be stiff to push back in.
Yes - caliper and disc should burn your fingers after heavy or repeated braking - a lot of friction is involved. If you watch videos of racing vehicles in the dark the disc will glow red hot.
Cast wheels are tubeless. If you are unsure about a tyre, go to the manufacturer website and they will have a tyre guide which lists the tyres that fit your bike. So Michelin for example recommend the PILOT POWER 2CT. The Street will fit the rim so you can use it, but it's not what Michelin recommend for the bike as it is a more general purpose tyre and Michelin (and most other manufacturers) recommend a sports tyre for this bike.
Hey david! I recently removed the cap on my rear brake reservoir and there was quite a bit of crystalization in the resevour and on the rubber cap. Is this a problem?
If you have pumped them back up with the lever so they move forward against the disk then they will work - you must remember this step, but it only takes a few pumps. If this is not happening then you need to check and see what is wrong.
@@jevsplay5116 Doesn't really matter unless you are racing. It's more important to change the fluid than how much you spend on it - I would bet 90% of bikes are overdue for a change in brake fluid
They were on mine and others have said the same. It may depend where you live. Easy to check - just pull a pad and see if there are flecks of a brassy metal in the pad.
Unbolt the caliper and rock it backwards and forwards so that the pads are pushed back by the disk. If you've already removed the caliper, with the old pads in place, lever them apart with a pry bar of some sort - a large screwdriver can work.
Do you still have the duke 390's stock side mirrors, can you shorten it for ease in lane filtering, cause the stock height gets easily caught on trucks and vans side mirror. Can you make a tutorial on how to best do it. Informative vids by the way😁
Thanks, much appreciated. There is never a single perfect placement for mirrors - too high and they catch van mirrors, below the handlebars and they catch car mirrors, depending on your body shape they may just show your elbows etc and on the Duke, they hit the tank and fairings. I have a set of mirrors I bought for just this purpose - but it will require welding so I'm still figuring out the design - there are some mirrors which would do the job perfectly but they are very expensive.
i cant get my caliper to move back n forth like that. I don't know if my spring is too strong or what the deal is. Id rather not have to remove the whole caliper just to fit in the inside pad. Anyone have any ideas on why my rear caliper doesn't easily move like in the video?
@@rolan2dr As I commented on your forum post - I don't see how that bolt came out without human intervention- most likely someone really badly adjusted the rear brake lever position. It isn't a banjo bolt. I suggest you buy a second hand master cylinder and use the parts you need from it.
@@MotoMirius I bought a second hand master cylinder but I can’t get the foot brake to stay in place to keep the push rod in place. I guess I’m going to have to take it to a dealer.

Hi!
I did the same mistake, did you get help?
How did you get it fixed? I have the same problem
Thanks David always a pleasure!🏍

It is a big help right I encounter problem with my rear brake
Good work with that!
I LOVE your passion sharing this model technical knowledge / guideline.. thanks from Malaysia KTM rider.

Hola, no hay razón para quitar las cuñas metálicas de la parte trasera; están ahí para ayudar a eliminar el chirrido de los frenos.

Buen trabajo. Muchas gracias por tu info.
Hi David, thanks for the explanation, is the 125 and 390 gen 1, the same calipar, thanks in advance
The same rear caliper has been fitted to the 125 to 390 Dukes from 2011 to 2021

Why u didn't turn the reservoir rubber cap upside down..
Because it has fluid on it, and if you turn it upside down it will run down onto the top part where it shouldn't be.
Hi mate :) is it normal for the calliper to heat up a lot after replacing the pads?
Thanks
Yes - caliper and disc should burn your fingers after heavy or repeated braking - a lot of friction is involved. If you watch videos of racing vehicles in the dark the disc will glow red hot.
Tell me, is the tire tubeless or with a tube? Is the MICHELIN STREET RADIAL 150/60R17 tire suitable?
Cast wheels are tubeless. If you are unsure about a tyre, go to the manufacturer website and they will have a tyre guide which lists the tyres that fit your bike. @@MotoMirius Thanks for the detailed answer
Any tips on stopping the brake from binding ?
Keep it clean. It will only bind if you've failed to keep on top of it.
Hey david! I recently removed the cap on my rear brake reservoir and there was quite a bit of crystalization in the resevour and on the rubber cap. Is this a problem?
Sounds like a change of fluid is overdue. You shouldn't be getting any noticeable crystallisation

hello.. what brake fluid use for ktm duke 125 2021 ? thanks
I don't think brand is important for brake fluid - just use a mainstream brand and change it regularly
dot4 or dot5.1 ?

Don't suppose you know if the standard stock pads are sintered pads?
They were on mine and others have said the same. It may depend where you live. Easy to check - just pull a pad and see if there are flecks of a brassy metal in the pad.
bro how much do they charge to replace front and rear brake pads ?? in showroom ?
I wouldn't know - depends how much they charge per hour. But this is so simple to do that I don't recall paying anyone to do it.
Alguien sabe porque el mío no regresa y queda como duro el freno trasero 😣😞
Si las almohadillas se pegan, es casi seguro que ellas o los pasadores estén sucios y necesiten limpieza. Las piezas limpias se moverán libremente.

Glad you think so!
I don’t have enough room to put the pads back in
You might've squeezed the brake lever. You'll need to push the piston back in by moving the caliper.
My foot brake came loose. Help!
Which part?
The banjo bolt, right behind the foot peg in your video.
BTW I brought my bike to the US from the UK.
