My notes for this video! Good luck to those who are taking the exam on Monday like me! How cities changed: The population in these cities exploded. Cities had to fastly build housing for the workers of the factories. So they built tenements, which were like apartments but way more closer and poorly ventilated. And the negative effects of living in closed spaces, was the spread of disease. A main example would be Cholera, where people got this by drinking contaminated water. Industrialization led to the standard of living, specifically the middle class. These people were called the White collar workers because they dressed up in their suits and their white collars. How the industrial revolution affected the family structure: Before the revolution, families lived on a farm, and it was a joint family. But after the revolution, families didn’t work together anymore, which ultimately changed their lifestyle. Societal effects would be the fracturing of family. Cult of Domesticity: where the woman is contributing to the society by raising children who would later grow up and contribute on their own. They are also supposed to create a haven for their husband to rest when they come back home. Women raised their voices during this time, because they didn’t like just raising kids and helping their husbands. Seneca Falls convention [Declaration of sentiments]. Environmental effects of the industrial revolution: Smog showed up in cities. People got sick because of this. Pollution, stuff dumped on the rivers.
My notes for this video if anyone wants them: Cities: Rural to urban migration → factory owners sponsored the building of tenements Lots of people crammed into tenement slums → spread of disease Cholera from contaminated drinking water Human waste dumped into streets or in/near water supply → started creating better sewage systems Class structures: Better standards of living → rise of a middle class Emergence of white collar worker and factory owners Family structures & the roles of women Families working separate jobs instead of together on a farm → fracturing of the family Housewives in the middle class + cult of domesticity told women their sole purpose was to raise children Seneca Falls Convention in the US 1848: Produced the Declaration of Sentiments Environmental effects: Contaminated rivers and smog everywhere Diseases like cholera

Once more, an excellent video. I particularly like the elements of humour in dealing with subjects such as child labour. One minor point in the 1:30-1:45 range. I must disagree with the assertion that figuring out the germ theory of disease happened before people started cleaning up sewage from cities. The previous miasma theory of disease also taught that cleaning up sewage is a good idea. And who really likes living in a disgusting fecal mess? For example, the "Great Stink" in July and August 1858 was when hot weather caused London to become a nightmare of rotting human feces. This led Parliament to commission the great Sir Joseph Bazalgette to construct the world's first modern sewer system. This was done under the auspices of the prevailing miasma theory of disease. Although the theory was incorrect, it did lead to the right solution.
Yeah, as I did a brief survey, I read that germ theory was older than I realized (speculations stretched way before this period). But even so, conclusions were still limited in their scope during these years. It’s true that no one willingly drank fecal contaminated water (didn’t need germ theory for that), but the spread of cholera genuinely baffled them. That’s all I meant. It took them a bit to connect the dots...
I’m working on topic videos, but if you need something for Unit 6 tonight, you can check out the Ultimate Review Packet. It has videos and study materials for unit 6 and all the rest of the units as well.
Old Friend and Ancestors of support please I pray that you unleash good workers for the futures from 1970's to the future now, which may kids be taught by they parents to do good works with they're hands, keep peace, defend yourself and love ones and never hide the truth from your mate, have shelter, and never say what you won't do... my notes:
How cities changed
influx of migrants from rural areas into urban areas, population of cities exploded
Cities not planning for new pop. so add bad infrastructure
Tenement: badly constructed, poorly ventilated, unsanitary
Factory workers sponsor building of tenements
Disease
Cholera: ppl get by dring contaminated water, result, diarrhea and vomiting, and some death
Ppl got sick bc human waste was either dumped into the streets or cesspools full of it were dumped into or near the water supply
Ppl didnt know much abt germs and disease
eventually they got it and then industrialized cities began to make efforts to solve these problems like better sewage and better ways to remove trash from people’s living spaces
Rise in standards of living
Growth of middle class
Industrialization afforded them more wealth to purchase consumer goods and better access to education
White collar worker: dressed up in their suits and their white collars and went to the office and management jobs
top of the social hierarchy were the industrialists or the factory owners
How families changed
Before: most families lived on farms and all work together
Now: everyone working, but not together
Families went to their factory jobs in the dark, and they returned home in the dark
They ate most of their meals in the factory with other factory workers, not their family
Effect: fracturing of family
wasn’t unusual for working class women to hold down jobs in factories
Wives of white collar workers typically didn’t have paid jobs at all but instead stayed home to raise children
Cult of Domesticity: bestow dignity upon women bc it said was you are doing good work at home and valuable work at home (You’re raising children who then can later make meaningful contributions to society)
taught that the woman’s main goal was to make the home a haven of rest for her husband who is out in the world doing real work
Women raise their voices for their rights (Seneca Falls Convention 1848)
women gathered and produced a document called the Declaration of Sentiments which borrowed its language heavily from the American Declaration of Independence with a few additions
We hold these truths to be self-evident; that all men and women are created equal
How everything affected the environment
fossil fuels like coal and petroleum were the driving engines of industrialization
New word enter English lexicon-smog: smoke and fog
choked the inhabitants and caused endless respiratory troubles for all who lived there
both human and industrial waste was dumped into rivers and that polluted the water supply
reated the occasion for the spread of diseases like cholera and other kinds of bacterial woes
Yes, make me my SANDWICH WOMAN!!!!!
