I just put a used ($600) Leer on my '98 Tacoma. The truck has an original equipment liner, which required the the previous owner to install 1/8" steel sheet after the bed started to rust through. I wanted the shell to keep it from happening again. I bought some big after-market clamps, that required me to cut through the plastic to install them. I have to adjust the fit of the shell. Now I get to do the lights! (I got my first pick-up in my old age---but still drive 5-Speed).
@@RT365 I spent my Saturday soldering 2' wires to the left tail light. I'm going to have the cargo light on the tail light power. Lucky the signal is a separate bulb from tail & brake light. Now, where and how far up to drill into the bed and miss the liner. I also want a 3-wire plug set---trailer plugs are too big. The fun never stops.
Your problems exist from the installation. The center can be pushed out from the inside, to "curve" the outside gaps and clamped in place at that time. Looking at the rear spacing of the skirt, by the door at the bottom, the unit should be drawn in on both sides. The split loom is necessary at the brake light in order to access the brake lite wire lead . Often, the brake light will have to be replaced and wiring ran under the carpet would be time consuming and expensive to replace. A little black tape at the ends of the loom will fix that. The Leer product has "clamp pockets" and proprietary clamps that partially hide the clamps with little or no intrusion as compared to other brands leaving the larger, more generic clamps completely exposed, could do a lot of damage not to mention injury, also...it is absolutely necessary to use clamping force to secure the cap, attaching the cap without force is unacceptable and could cause injury or death! As far as the fuse box...this is a great addition to the truck cap offering expandability, up to six circuits i.e. cigarette lighter adapters for phone chargers, 12v fans, lights etc, all with a fuse box built in. Many things on the video could be improved by the installer's creativity. Indicators like these are simple and easy to remedy. The Leer product speaks for itself, the best of the best.
I had a Leer cap installed in 2002, Tacoma. Faulty gap hider wouldn't seal against gap, because the gap was too narrow or non-existent at the bottom. And the cap leaked, leaked, leaked, probably around the seal toward the cab end. In 2005, after lots of calls, Leer installed a new cap on my truck. Instead of leaking near the cab. This one leaked around the back flap, because the perimeter seal was not properly installed and attached in the upper left-hand corner. Then again, the new cap leaked less than the first one. The cap is on my truck now, and I just re-sealed the old perimeter seal, and the back-flap attachment. That 3m auto tape can hold for a long time (10 years+). Not sure I'd buy another Leer, but they do look cool.
I just bought mine from wrecking yard for 160.00 what i used to seal around the front and sides where meets truck bed is sill foam seal that is used on bottom sill plate of a house.
I've had like 7 Leer Truck Caps and loved them, getting a new truck in a few weeks and getting a new one, They don't leak, they are well made, only problem I had with my older ones was the twist handles for the rear window getting corroded by road salt, I even put those rubber covers and it still would seize so I started going with the ones without those twist, lock handles and getting the one that locks and unlocks with the truck doors..... best thing I did. The options that I get with my mine are, Roof liner, best thing, will not go without it as I hate getting to fibreglass shards in my back while loading the truck, I also get the 12V power block, perfect for putting an electric cooler in the back, using a 12v air compressor..... I also get the removable front window for ease of cleaning the truck cab window and to remove any snow and ice chunks between the cab and cap. Long time truck cap owners know how annoying when a chunk of ice gets stuck in between.
Good video man, I wouldn’t be worried about the wires much, don’t think your gear would mind unless you get it snagged in it lol. I just ordered my A.R.E canopy today.
I have heard these same complaints from other owners, to include owners of different manufacturers. Most folks rewire and replace the brackets. Shouldn't have to improve on 3k worth of product. Thanks for the video, Great Man!
Thanks for this video. I'm researching camper shells for my truck to transport my dogs around. All I know is I want screens on the windows so they can get cool air. This video showed me a lot.
One of your complaints was the catch for the door latches. Mine are even worse. Leer used self tapping sheetmetal screws into the inside of of the fiberglass top. Two screws on each side. A totally garbage method which worked loose on both sides very quickly. Remember theres limited places to screw into back there and every time a screw pulls it leaves a hole where you cant sink another screw. I ended up fabricating an aluminum flat stock and mounting them on both sides. If those pull out Im pretty much screwed. Another issue, the back door leaks and the dealer can't stop it. Water drips around the inside buttons that secure the hinges. Big design flaw. I am not happy with my Leer cap. Poorly made , badly designed.
Was just wondering if You have a Leer Fiberglass Truck Cap ! Bought Used if You Can have The all glass 1 Pice Removed and install the 2 Pice glass windows on One like left hand side window and then Put in a Screen on the Same side ! So you have air flowing through your Leer Fiberglass Truck Cap ! If it Was Bought Used .
My biggest complaint, the window opens only tall enough to hit me in the nose area, and my truck is lifted 3 inches, what's with those stubby window shocks?
I was looking at the XR but found the XQ looked the best. The XL is similar to the XQ but has the 3/4 glass that opens for venting. The XR looks like a shell that was made 10 years ago, the XL looks sleek and modern on the newer vehicles and has flush mounted windows.
RICKYTUBE365 I was saying I’m getting your same truck but a gas I know yours is a duramax 6.6 lol. What mpg do you get without towing when it was stock?
The roof of the cap should match the roof of the truck. The roof of my truck is not smooth. It has ridges for structure. The Canopy/Cap/Shell should match.
Nate Rally, thank you. I thought I was the only one that got charged 500.00 to replace the window. I said the exact same thing, "to the dump" Leer is overpriced, impossible to contact customer service. I bought it 8 months ago and the window shattered, by the way it leaks water too. Piece of Sh*^. Anyone reading this, You Have Been Warned...
Hahaha these are personal issues. The gaps on the sides would never be noticeable if your trust wasnt raised a foot and a half. And really ,you are complaining about the wires that go to a lock motor and light.
That gap is not right. I think you should go back to the guy who put it on for you. I also don't like looking at wires. Gotta be a way to creatively cover them. I don't know what that is right now... As far as the clamps. You can use them to run bungees off them to hold cargo down when you need to . You can hand cargo netting to cover them. nice rig overall brother.
Mark this canopies are made as cheap as possible. I have reached to them once before to let them know what the customers want but they pretty much told me to duck off. And yes you are correct the hinges are just cheap.
The cap should not have any part of it hanging over the edges. It should be flush all the way around. I had the same issue when my deal tried installing mine. They took pictures and sent to Leer. Leer stated they sent the wrong mold and shipped the correct one for installation. I would follow up with the dealer as to receiving correct cap for your truck. The seller should have sent the VIN to leer
understand your point but when you paid top dollar for top product this is the cheap way for leer to get away with this and sell a substandard product..
Amazing how a typical consumer can spot easily fixable problems that would take minimal effort, wires, box, exposed sharp hardware. Expensive engineers can’t see/ make these inexpensive fixes. Just charge another $100 and fix this garbage workmanship.
Bottom line is truck camping sucks compared to van camping. Trucks can go more places, except they aren't really places you want to be. Get 4x4 in a van if you can afford it. Truck roadtrips are a drag compared to a van.
This started out as a truck, but what he did to it makes it not a truck. You can't realistically or safely tow with it due to the lift and he has tow mirrors. The bed is so high off the ground it's basically worthless as a loading point from the tailgate. That leaves dumping fill with a loader, but he put a finished cap on the back so he isn't putting anything in the bed really. This vehicle will never be used as a truck nor will it ever approach 20% of payload capacity in this configuration. The wheels are just absurd and he isn't doing real offroading to justify it. Also, lifted that high makes it ride like shit. This is the definition of rice. No, this is not a truck, it's just an exercise in bad taste and impracticality- and every man that looks at it being driven around is laughing.
Thanks for the info. It seams that finding the right installer is just as important as finding the right cap.
uyki ui I will recommend you do your research. This canopy is garbage.
Where do you Find The Right installer ! What Town I am in The Zip Code of 15022 !

Jesse Uresti Camper Sales love your feply thx. Still i hold leer acountable for the flaw in design putting too much on tue vendor ie installer.
That makes sense.

I agree with your comment in the finish. Do you get lot of dust inside the topper when using it as a daily driver on paved roads?
Agreed brother.
Why is there music playing while you are talking?
I agree with you! Old stile, cable visible looks like 1980s

Luc Levesque thx got your response. Very detailed.
Bonjour Luc . J'ai eu plusieurs camions mais jamais de cabine comme ca . dis moi : est ce qu'on voit bien derriere? est-ce que c'est bruyant? merci .
Can you advise which edition of leer comes without those twist locks? And which one would you recommend?thanks
The installers did that with the wires. Mine has NO WIRES SHOWING.
Good video man, I wouldn’t be worried about the wires much, don’t think your gear would mind unless you get it snagged in it lol. I just ordered my A.R.E canopy today.

steve steve sorry to heard that #leercanopy should fix your problems free of charge.
My dealer told me point blank, these things will leak, no matter what, once that's in the open, buyer beware.

Recon Roger that’s factory
Ricardo Ruiz that’s what I mean, why design the window to open halfway up
hi, do you know what is the different between Leer 100XR and Leer 100 XL?
The side window looks better almost a one piece in the xl, on the xr is cut by the middle
I was looking at the XR but found the XQ looked the best. The XL is similar to the XQ but has the 3/4 glass that opens for venting. The XR looks like a shell that was made 10 years ago, the XL looks sleek and modern on the newer vehicles and has flush mounted windows.
Looks better than an ARE as far a quality
Will it fit my f250 bed size 6.74 bed length 66.9 inches width. ?
It's pretty funny how you used a drone for a truck topper video!
tell me more
How far do the side windows open?
6 inches
Thanks for showing us the inside stuff to, that was helpful 🏁👻👍
That’s a badass Chevy 3500 SRW. I’m about to but a 3500 hd longbed SRW gas.
TheRealTruman diesel bro

TheRealTruman 10-14 no bueno
Does it lock?
are the Hinges strong?? opening and closing will have them break in time ?? whats the quality of them????

Dave you are correct. We paid so much money for a product with no 👎 reasonable warranty or support.
Cant hear you over the music at some points. Good information though
Sorry about that
ARE YOU DOING A VIDEO OR PLAY MUSIC? PICK ONE
awesome video!
thanks. nice video.
You need to put a step ladder in the back of your truck.
right

That looks really nice !! How expensive is it ?
1500 for the leer cover not worth the money
RICKYTUBE365 so you dont recommend buying one ?
Quality Landscape and Hauling Co I do not recomend until leer comes with a better product.
RT365 oh ok. Thanks !
2 much money for what you get.
Serious Nit picking... wow.
Boomer T wow you must have no attention to detail....
Do you have steps or an elevator to get into the bed?
Definitely a tiny penis compensator

Hey Ricardo love your video, I’m like you, details matter.
You are correct details matter. If Leer want us to pay top dollars for their products they should provided a longer warranty and service.
Bro, you got a sunroof? I am jealous!
thx
It looks “charp” man!
what are you about 5 feet tall?
tilley Schmolph 5’11’’
somethin wrong when a guy has a truck he cant get into lol

Charlie Rosene lmao. For Sure
300 bucks for a 90$ rear glass im taking my leer to the dump now
Nate Rally Lee quality is bad. I am not impressed. UnIn less they change their process their product is sub standard.
Really nit-picking about the plastic split-loom sleeve on the wiring - that's something that the end user can easily deal with

Just a crappy workmanship.
