It started out as a 4chan shitpost. Then a meme. Then it became a movement of changing the world to be a better brighter one. We are the only fandom with a real charity organization recognized by the US Government.
That aside, the show is "decent". No marvel, but does everything well and a big change of pace for most forms of narrative.
And "friendship is magic" aside likes to hide more adult references or dark plots you can pick up over time. It's like a mix of a cartoon and a anime really.
