This is by far the best video I have seen on making these kinds of layered papers to get unique prints for collage! And I have watched a ton of them. I have a sort of “dyslexia” about the layering sequence and people normally go too fast with little explanation. This was so paced and organized and yet with above average results that I think I have finally “got it”. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much! I have had a lot of teaching experience (horse riding, computer programs and art) over the years. I really try to find the balance between too slow (boring) and too fast. Glad that I got it right for you!
I have that same “dyslexia’ issue 😂 it’s so hard to get my head wrapped around using the gelli layers but she did an awesome job of explaining it to us “backwards” brains 😂
You mentioned that you made those stencils? That is awesome, I agree with others that you should find a way to sell them but also, I’m curious how you made them. I would love to see video on how to make our own! I have tons of ideas in my head I would like to have a stencil of, I LOVE drawing/ painting trees so that was exciting to see yours! Thank you for an awesome video, you did a wonderful job of explaining the layering method. My brain gets all tripped up when thinking about layering, even just using the gelli plate since it is a negative of the image it creates on paper. Like someone else mentioned below, it’s like my dyslexia kicks in and makes this challenging to learn lol! Anyway, thank you for helping that lightbulb click in my brain. I subscribed to your channel! I can’t wait to check out your other videos ❤
Actually, I have done a video on creating stencils. If you haven't found it already, it is called Transform Your Botanical Gel Prints into Stunning Stencils: A Step-by-Step Guide. Thanks for watching!
@@KitBellArtist Kit, I’m thrilled with my success with your great instructions. I tweaked step 1-2 by printing the thinner masks (grasses and string) onto text and sheet music! I used bolder, hand cut botanical masks for step 3.
Outstanding demonstration of layering on gel plate. Thank you ❤ it makes sense in my head but when I attempt application I do something completely different. Excellent visual instruction. Subscribed ✅
I absolutely LOVE watching your videos Kit. You are so clear each step of the way. It enables us, as viewers, to then go away and try this - I'm going to share this particular one with a community group I'm working with. I know, like me, they'll love it!! Thank you again.
Many thanks for this tutorial. I haven't been very creative for ages, but this is really inspiring :) I have subscribed and am now going to have a look at some of the other videos you've made!
Hi Kit! I’ve made layered botanicals before and loved them but got absorded in a more artwhisperer88 kind of style. After watching this video, I went back to the studio and had the best and most fun day making layered botanicals again. Some have four or more layers and they’re all just gorgeous. Now, do a video on making a collage with your beautiful papers because I’ve also seemingly forgotten how to collage, lol. Thank you for reinspiring me!
It will extend the drying time the same way as the gel. The difference is that it will make the paint more like fluid acrylics rather than heavy bodied. So just personal preference.
Hello from the street where your brother Pat lives. Maureen here, introducing gelli plates to students at art gallery later this week. Lovely to see you working with rice paper which I also value
@@maureenfaulkner4323 Thanks Maureen! My husband and I are planning to visit PG in the summer of 2025. Let me know how you make out with your students. The gelli plate is a great way to get inquisitive minds into art!
I use Spectra Art Tissue which is available at art supply stores and through Amazon online. If you are in the UK or Europe, try Carnival Wet Strength tissue which is also good.
Hi Kit I absolutely adore your work. The sensitivity- exquisite. Please advise - I oil paint on canvas and board. How could I incorporate tissue prints onto my canvas? With cold wax medium gel under the print and brushing on top? Could that work? Many thanks and please keep posting. The content is amazing
I have never tried collage over oil. It might work. You would have to experiment a bit. Just a thought - Golden Open acrylics behave more like oils plus they are great for gel printing. You might want to try a couple of tubes to see if you like them. Collage over acrylic is very stable.
Just a tip, as long as you put down acrylics first oils can be applied after, just not the reverse. I will paint my first layers in acrylic then finish the painting in oil. You can collage your canvas in cool looking acrylic gelli creations then oil paint over them. So much potential for playing and creativity! Side note, it’s cool to see another oil artist on here ❤
You mention mixing open gel medium with non open regular acrylic paint to help extend the drying time a bit more ? Can you give the proportion of straight acrylic paint to the open medium? Thank you!
Here is a video I did on that topic: ruclips.net/video/m9b5FhtrFrI/видео.html. It is called Acrylic Paint Comparison for Gel Printing and you can locate it on my channel. I use about 50/50 but experiment with that ratio to see what works best for you. Too much gel and it weakens the colour. Not enough will reduce the number of prints you get. Hope that helps!
Awesome demonstration of paint layering using a gel plate. One thing I've noticed is you've got an interesting way of pronouncing "opaque", you seem to be adding "i" or "y" in there, between the "a" and the "q". Or maybe it's just my poor hearing. 💜
In video I am using three different papers to see what the results might be. One is just a light mixed media paper. You could also use a drawing paper. I get it from my local art store. The second is Spectra Art Tissue. This is available on Amazon. I get it from Staples (online) in Canada. Many of the art supply store chains (such as Blick) in the US carry it. The third is a rice paper. I use the Sketch Paper pad. It is available on Amazon and also at art stores. Each give different results. I am going to be exploring the rice paper further as I think this is a nice weight for collage and it takes the layers really well.
For this process, I use fairly thick layers of paint to get the opacity. Sometimes, I will just add a bit more paint and roll it into what is already on the plate ... BUT ... sometimes I see something too interesting to waste so I take a ghost print!! And if I am changing colours on the plate, I always "clean" it off with prints. Some very interesting stuff happens!
