    A note for homeschool parents of neuro-divergent kids: It is ok that your homeschool day doesn't look this calm and peaceful. It is ok that you kid didn't read early or even on time. It is ok if your 10 year old is still struggling with their fine motor skills. I really enjoy watching Sarah's videos but I remember the early days of homeschooling kids with learning disabilities and how these picture perfect families made me feel like a total failure. It's ok if you and your child(ren) are on a different path.

      Not just neuro-divergent kids. Reading is a skill that different kids will reach different ages, and you can't "make" a kid read before age 5 if they aren't ready. While some kids will read before age 5, most do not read until ages 6-8, and some children who have learning difficulties may be even older.

      And to add, her oldest is FIVE. It's easy to be an 'expert' when your oldest is five. ;) Please don't fret if your homeschool day and your homeschoolers don't resemble this at all. We've been at this for 8 years now, with almost 6 students (and two more coming up the ranks) and I promisepromisepromise this picture-perfect, insta-worthy morning isn't entirely the whole picture.

      @@myhomeremedies yes!!! thank you.
      All children need to play a lot and reading early should not be the goal. If you read to them a lot and they naturally pick it up, great. otherwise, pressuring them is unhelpful.
      I like how relaxed Sarah is about things, and I hope that reading for Calvin comes along naturally without pressure.

      Extremely true! My son is 5, and he’s not there yet. He is read to, but he’s also autistic, had delayed speech, still struggling on certain sounds, and because of his delayed milestones as a baby, he still has difficulty with core strength and fine motor skills.
      His sister is almost 4, and she’s writing more than him, can write the start of her name, has a better grasp of speech and her motor skills. But she wasn’t delayed like her brother was. So yes, she seems ahead in some areas.
      But looking at both children individually, they both have come a long way. My son much more than his sister, even though she seems ahead of him in some areas.
      I’ll leave the bulk of teaching for school, and help them develop and learn what they want at home through play and drawing and some workbooks.
      I should also add, my son is very good at math, can count to 20, so basic addition and minus work, and loves numbers.
      Kids develop at their own pace.

      Couldn’t agree with this comment anymore! All children are different! Can be quite easy to watch this video as a homeschool Mum and feel like a total failure with where your children are at. Each family is different. Not every family has their husband to hand but is rather out of the home working. So lovely to see Ivy being able to read so well, and lovely to see how homeschooling works for Sarah’s family but know each child will get there in their own time. You can teach every child in the exact same way and they may get things at different times. It’s okay.

    I was homeschooled for most of elementary and all of junior high. While I enjoy going to public school now, I am SOSOSO glad my parents homeschooled me. I was able to learn at my own pace, I’m a lot closer to my mom and my brothers because of it, and I was able to choose a lot of the curriculums I did! But without a doubt, the biggest thing was this: THEY DIDN’T MAKE ME READ THINGS I DIDN’T WANT TO!! I know so many people who hate reading because school turned reading into a chore for them, which is so sad. My parents bought lots of fun books, went to the library often, and let me choose my own novel studies from a list. I owe so much of my love of reading to them.

Frequent library visits and reading fun, colorful, and sometimes hilarious books were a big part of my childhood. I attended public high school, and was amazed at how academically advanced I was compared to many of my peers. Anything that engages the mind or is intellectually challenging is thrilling to me, and learning is a constant love of mine. I want to instill the same love into my kids one day.

    We have been homeschooling our children for nine years and I guarantee that the longer you homeschool, the more you begin to see that as the parent you don't have all the answers for educating. Our firstborn read very early and had the ability to catch on and memorize quickly. Having multiple children allows a parent to see that it's actually not how driven we are as parents to educate our kids, but that children all learn at their own pace and interest level. I'm all about using opportunities to teach our children how to count, learn colors, the alphabet, etc... but realistically, I'm not in favour of children younger than five having a structured learning time each day. I'll just be brutally honest that our homeschooling NEVER looked like that; someone was/is always distracted, fussing or struggling. That's real life!

    • @AandM8
      @AandM8 3 года назад +3

      I only WISH I had what Sarah shows in this video before I was 5. Structure for play time and play time being a fun way to slowly learn things is how children learn. They do it in preschool. My parents never did anything with me and my siblings before 5 and we ALL struggled through school. We eventually homeschooled and as beneficial as that was, we were behind in education (our public school sucked) and we had to actually learn how to be around each other all day. It made us stronger. But I see my sister doing things like this with her kids and they’re SO smart. And it isn’t even nearly as structured as this video!

    I was homeschooled all twelve years and I believe my mom did a fantastic job of it. Her main focus was to get me to be a critical thinker and be able to problem-solve independently as I grew up. She read to me throughout my childhood and got me reading proficiently on my own at a very young age. I think that's a major reason why I'm such a bookworm and I'm so grateful for that. I attended a once a week homeschool co-op with other homeschool kids in the area for all of our extra-curricular activities like foreign language, sports, music lessons, writing and science labs, computer classes, and lots of fun, educational field trips. I am so thankful I was homeschooled. I don't feel like I missed out on anything with all by not attending a traditional school. In fact, I believe homeschooling set me several steps ahead of a lot of the public school kids I knew growing up because I got to go at a pace that was right for me, which helped me to retain things better. And I liked that I got to have my education be in a Christian-based setting. I can't recommend homeschooling enough. It's a lot of work, but it's absolutely worth it.

      @@laurenjarek-simard8553 Put simply, if I had questions about things, they would say things like "After reading _____, what do you think it meant?" or they would let me figure things out on my own, and if I needed help they would show me, but always made me try it on my own first. They allowed me to view the world through my own eyes, not theirs. They let me come to my own conclusions about things without their opinions getting in the way and influencing how I felt. I was never handed easy answers. I had to actually use my own brain. I would definitely get frustrated sometimes if the answers didn't come easily, but I feel like it helped me to be frustrated and have to think it through versus just being told the answer. Curiosity was always encouraged in our household. The more curious about things, the better. Open-ended questions were also something my mom liked to ask. It encouraged rich conversations that made my brain spark with theories and ideas, and only made me more curious. There were never any boundaries to what I could learn/discover.

    I don't understand why children have to be able to read before they start school. In Germany our kids start school at the age of 6-7. Won't they be bored if they know how to read and write beforehand? Also the brain has a certain capacity (of course with a certain range), but they wont become Einstein when they know how to read at the age of 4 unless their brain has the capacity to become Einstein. Maybe Sarah Therese has only Einstein Babys, but don't stress your children over what they have to know before they start school.

      From a neuroscience and psychological point of view there absolutely no need or benefit for children to learn read, calculate or have structured education time before the age of 6. They need safety, communuty, physical activity. I do not like people sharing homeschooling similar to this that have no evidence beside the adult's / parent's idea how everything shall go. It gives the idea to others this has anything to do with neurotypical development of children, gives the wrong idea.

    It’s always interesting to see how different people homeschool. We really don’t start anything formal until close to 5 or so. We do puzzles, color, read together, climb trees, just a lot of play. My kids spend 3-4 hours a day outside. There are tons of learning opportunities in that. I tend to wait until my kids are closer to five to start writing, addition, and reading(aside from alphabet and letter sounds, etc ). Statistically, by 3rd grade all kids are about the same level regardless if they were early or later learners.

Age 5 is really, really young, and not all children are yet ready for those academic skills that those ages. Some children won't be ready until they are older.

      It is a common misconception that homeschoolers are socialy awkward. I have actually read studies that indicated they are "better" at reading social cues etc. But you will definitely have shy/akward kids homeschooling just like you would see shy/akward kids at school. Also most homeschoolers have more time for extra activities like sports, art or music classes were they do socialize. Hope this helps a little :)

      @amandafranklin1770 3 года назад +3

      Totally agree with Marissa's comment! I was homeschooled all the way through and didn't feel like I "missed out." Homeschooled kids have plenty of opportunities to socialize: sports, music class, art class, 4-H club, church, youth group, Awana clubs, local homeschool groups, and various other activities, plus the good ol playing with neighborhood kids. Of course, it is important for the parents to realize that it is their responsibility to make sure their kids have access to these opportunities. :)

    • @Jcvolleychick
      @Jcvolleychick 3 года назад +2

      Beyond the extracurriculars that Marissa talked about, I also know quite a few folks who join homeschool "co-ops", which is a group of families who follow the same/similar curriculum and meet up 1-2 times a week to do a group lesson together and share what they're learning at home. Also (for families who attend) church is a great opportunity for kiddos to be around other kiddos at least 1x/week. There's lots of opportunities for kids to get that social interaction outside of a traditional school setting!
