Great sounding flat 12. Very similar sounding to the classic Porsche 917, in many ways - no bad thing. A shame Mercedes pulled out as the car was just starting to win races and show its potential, it could have saved the championship from folding at the end of 1992.
They kept the exhaust banks separated which gives it a lower pitch and less resolute sound. Probably because the banks are too far apart to merge them at an performance increasing location. But , a merge would give it a more aventador-like sound.
Don't tell Mercedes it is a "flat-12". I'm quite sure they'll quickly correct you and say it is a "180-degree V-12". A reporter made that mistake in 1991 talking about the car and was quickly reminded it is a 180-degree V-12.
@@nik7bkh965 Yeah, I hate it. Just a harsh screech. No harmonics at all. It was never popular with fans at the time either. This Merc sounds way better. If you want to hear musical engines you need to hear late '70s and early 80s Formula 1, like a Matra V12 or a Cosworth DFV in full cry.
@@skelskell Car sounds are subjective. I personally love boxer sounds. You may not, but I do. That said, you are right that this car didn't really do well.
The older C11 had more power (if unrestricted) and was more reliable. The C291 did beat it once (Mercedes entered both in the same races for a while because the C291 was so unreliable, and ran only C11s at Le Mans), and it won its last race, but was ultimately disappointing for them.
The C11 is much faster in a straight line with a 400km/h top speed, the C291 can't get anywhere near that, but the C291 handles better. I don't know which one is capable of the quicker lap times though.
The C291 is aerodynamically superior and the C11 has more power. In 1991 the C11 was racing with a 100 kg weight penalty and no qualifying boost so not a good comparison. The Autopolis version of the C291 (the one driven here) was the best. The C291 would be fastest on race laps with the edge going to the C11 on qualifying boost. The C292 would have been significantly faster.
