BADAZZTHANG No, Blackish. This show is a comedy. A super smart show that educates the watcher every episode. If it were a musical, so very many non- blacks would understand that it’s not enough that slavery physically ended but that the consequences continue to plague every generation
Wow! That's amazing! I only know of Marsai (Diane) and Jenifer (Ruby) that can sing but I'm glad the others were authentic in their singing! Brilliant! 😭🙌
I loved this episode! We need more Hamilton inspired history lessons. I'm a history buff but i acknowledge (but cant understand) that most people are bored when learning history. Putting it in this style maybe more people will be willing to learn it
This was nothing short of spectacular--especially for a sitcom. I love how EVERY episode teaches! Helping to break down those racial barriers. Kudos to Black-ish.
Yea, cus there where stories like Emmitt Till's. Where he didn't even whistle at the white women, but she claimed he did. They kill him for it anyway. He was 14 in 1955. #restinpeace
That's the point of the lyric, I think. Many of the things they sang about being able to do once they were freed, Black Americans have either been targeted or persecuted for after 1863 in the past, still cannot do, or are simply still waiting for. The point is to punctuate, for the viewers who know their history, that the work for freedom is still not over. (In fact, slavery itself is still not over. The Thirteenth amendment means that forced labor is permitted to punish convicted criminals -- where Black people in particular are far more targeted by law enforcement and falsely convicted --- and sharecropping, where families would be bullied and coerced into contracted labor on someone's land and not permitted to leave before the contract was over, didn't end until around the 1960s or so, possibly later). Black Americans are still far more likely to be refused a loan from the bank, just as another example, and though not mentioned in the song explicitly (though the mention of Emmett Till, who never actually whistled at anyone, implies it), lynchings still happen; six young people were lynched just this last week.
Do you know what that means? It was the reparations that each black (person or family) former slave would get after being free, as both like an apology and a booster to help them in a world where you need land and such. But they never got that reparation. Hundreds of years of FREE labor, a promise to be paid, and then forgotten. That’s what 40 acres and a mule is.
