The Oldest Junk Boat Left In Hong Kong

- Victoria Harbor is filled with boats of all shapes and sizes. However, there’s one boat that has a particularly special relationship with Hong Kong. The Dukling is Hong Kong’s oldest authentic junk boat and it’s still going strong nearly 70 years later.
For Hong Kong’s Tanka people, living aboard their fishing vessels was common practice. Junk boats used to be a common sighting in Hong Kong’s waters but as the city modernised the junks began to disappear. Dukling itself sank in 2014 and its stories could have been lost to history forever. Thanks to the dedicated efforts of Captain Ng and others, the Dukling was given a second chance.
The Dukling is now the only authentic Junk boat that is publicly accessible in Hong Kong. Visitors can enjoy a nostalgic ride in Victoria Harbor while gazing at the city’s glorious skyline.

Would you take a ride on the Dukling? 👀⛵
😂
Totally 💯
YES!!! PLEASE tell me how I can win a trip to ride this boat!
Take me on board! After all, its Chinese name is Duck Sprite!
I would love to get a ride/tour on the Dukling!
With the floating restaurant gone, this should become an historical cultural treasure even when sailing her becomes difficult...dock her and become a museum
I agree
Totally agree.
Keep preserving this treasure! 🙏
"dock her."
Ayo?
I always thought these looked nice
We might call it junk but we know this boat is a treasure
The food they eat on the boat is called junk food 😅
@@larsstougaard7097good one
@@larsstougaard7097 IDK but i think adjective ("Junk") add in front of the word("Boat") is referred to "the boat" and not the food they eat
@@panfarmld9664 ,
I think the proper word would be "Traditional" Chinese Food.
@@panfarmld9664 "Junk" is just what the foreigners called the boat from the native word "Chuan", or possibly from portugese and dutch colonials who saw Javanese boats "Jong" and adopted that name to chinese ships which looked similar
When I was in the USN i had a junk boat built in Hong Kong for $42000 USD as in 1977 no one wanted one and boat builders were struggling to stay in business it was built of teak great construction, had an engine along I sailed it to the philippines where I was stationed I had a great time with it for a few years until i got out of the USN sold it to a fellow servicemember for 45,000 i always wonder what happened to it..great
That's awesome. Do you have pictures of it?
I sailed on her when I was like 4-5. One of my first memories back in early 1990s was of my entire family puking over the side, including various aunts, uncles, and grandparents. Apparently I made it through just fine and the captain said I had 'sea legs' lol. I've since stuck to the Star Ferry instead of the junk!
I’m shocked that even after being sunk for half a year, they were able to restore it! 😮 a true labor of love - I can’t imagine all the work!
Wood, especially exotic tropical wood like teak, underwater is just fine.
Unique antique which can be visited by the public & enjoy fabulous views of Victoria Harbor!
They seem very proud of it. Just goes to show, one man's Junk is another man's Treasure.
I remember how prevalent junk boats were with Hong Kong. It's sad how there's only one left today!
"Duck" was the best.
One man's junk is another man's treasure
Exactly 👌
@@GreatBigStory Wow I just got the attention of a youtuber with 5 million+ subscribers 🤯👌😄
That sounds gay, tbh.
@@mehornyasfk That must be a good thing? At least as a gay person I would think so or you dont know how that makes people sound when they say it in a negative way... or youre 11?
Love that The Big Story has come back and we need to keep these junk boats alive!
My one word would be: “cool” for sure.
1955!? Those pictures made it seem much older lol
This is something that the gov should do to preserve and protect its cultural heritage.
The Beijing government doesn't preserve the culture of the regions. Only Beijing culture.
@@Dayvit78hong kong has its own government. Granted it's still under mainland china.
Awesome! I mean these boats are so iconic. A shame there's only a few left and that this is the oldest one. And that there's only a few places that can repair/restore it as well.
The Dukling of Theseus
I was born in HK and went back once in 1980 for a visit. Nice to see my old home and see some history about it.
How wonderful and interesting. It brings great joy to visitors and captain along with its homage to the harbor. Simply beautiful
You guys are back 🤗
This is amazing, I am glad to see that there still are junks that are preserved
The junk introduced numerous innovations, including the sternpost rudder, watertight bulkheads, and the bilge pump. In fact, Ben Franklin mentions bulkheads, suggesting that a certain ship, since it would mostly be for cargo and not passengers, should be built with the compartments caulked shut "in the Chinese manner."
Beautiful restoration. The work to get this boat back to like new must've been back breaking. Absolutely amazing work.
The old man driving the boat with the support of the young man in the fancy suit are the HKers keeping the spirit of HK alive
like the neon lights, these junk boats are part of HK's boomtime history and the administration should at least keep some of them around at all cost!
Very enjoyable and informative. Thank you!
I'm glad that people are keeping cultural heritage alive
I enjoyed this video and story, I always enjoy traditional Chinese history and documentaries. Thank you for sharing this video with all of us. If you happen to run across any stories with video about Chinese Carpentry, I would be interested in seeing them. Thank you again. B.T.
Beautiful Duckling 🦢
That boat also happens to appear on the logo of the Hong Kong Tourism Board.
I'm an ocean person from Boston, she's a beauty and a floating museum. Wonderful to see her brought back to life.
A floating museum, nice video
Fantastic work. Great documentary.
I remember watching Enter the Dragon and the Hong Kong harbour scenes were amazing, there were HUNDREDS of them !
They're such a beautiful design...
I remember seeing this Junk boat when I visited Hong Kong back in 2012. Its was quite the sight to see at night.
such a rare Chinese junk! Have seen it in the harbour sometimes, but didn’t realise it’s the oldest Chinese junk left!
NO WAY GREAT BIG STORY IS BACK LES GOOOO
Thank you to those who keep her sailing the harbor of Hong Kong! It’s important to keep the heritage alive! 😊
Once the symbol of Hong Kong!
I was there in 1967 aboard the USS Monticello LSD 35, got it painted all the way to the water line, all woman did the painting for left over food and scrap metal. I seen many types of vessels such as the Dukling and families living on them.
These historic boats show a different and unique side of hong kong 👏👏
Duklings could also be a heritage boat tour, or be repurposed as floating restaurants.
amazing
I read a hardy boys book where the mystery was about a chinese junk they bought , always was interest in their cool designs
I love those boats! My family owns a chinese junk boat commissioned and built in Hong Kong by the New Yuen Hing Shipyard in 1982. It is in immaculate condition and with its beautiful red sails, it truly is a sight to see in the Caribbean.
I like how one kid already understands the concept of nostalgia, but the other one is just like "Duck!"
Is "Heung Gong" Cantonese? I wonder because in Mandarin HK is "Xiang Gang."
🎉❤🎉❤🎉😊😊
Brings to life the descriptions of a sailors life by James Clavell's Ti Pan.
So great big story in online again?
Times change fast. When I was there in late 80s there was about a hundred of them just off the yacht club.
That was the best little kid response I’ve heard😂😂🦆
What is this translation from 1:00 ? He said that people would usually refer to his people as Hakka people but that’s not what they call themselves and would usually refer to themselves as “water people”. No mention of Tanka at all.
When I visited Hong Kong I was very disapointed that there were no more junks to be found.
❤❤❤
Bravo.......the junk boat are made like bamboo.......camparments that run to roof.......and the sail is the the greatest assist......it is the only boat that can sail in to the wind......cheers
I want one!😮
Me to!😃
I hope Hong Kong can keep their tradition of Independent alive
A rare, historical piece of Junk, (excuse the pun), that the sea gave back. I had many yachts in my lifetime but always coveted a junk or a Madagascar D how. This Junk should be sailed and treasured as a Hong Kong
Damn phone...!!... as I was saying above; This boat must be sailed, (inspected every year), as a Hong Kong piece of history; not moth-balled in museum! I quote Horatio Nelson " Men and Ships rot in Harbour". ⚓
Wooden boats can absorb shocks from thebsra better. I have been travelling to Pulau Ketam using their modern fibre glass boats and you can feel the micro shocks of the sea when it traverse across the Sea. One day a keelong owner offer to send us back using his personal wooden fishing boat. It was slim, slender and long. The ride wad comfortable like a limousine. It ran smooth and wiggle around like a sports car. Definitely the boat builders have refine the art of making boats all these years. Neverthess its a dying trade making wooden boats in Malaysia.
Ok but that boat kinda looks like the Destiny’s Bounty from Ninjago
What ever happened to Hong Kong s floating mobile home boats? The harbor used to be lined with them all the way up to the 1980s
The life rafts in the back almost look like tail lights to me.
After those sailor retire this boat will have to put in the museum assuming there are only a few.
Is it the Duckling meaning baby duck or is it Duk Ling (that's what the side of the ship says). If so, what does it mean in Cantonese?
"Duck spirit"/"Spirited duck"
A falha é que o chines falado é somente legendado em ingles. Tornando sem entendimento. Linda nave
I get the feeling this might be a ship of Theseus scenario. How much of that boat is original?
Such an amazing culture!
I'm glad they're preserving that beautiful vessel and I'm glad they haven't abandoned religious practices. Unlike western countries
What a unique girl.
They should install a high performance marine engine on that thing so it can do some crazy speeds
The hull was not designed for those sorts of stunts. At 2.20 in the video there is a glimpse of the engine. I can tell you it is a Gardner 6LW. A medium speed diesel engine with 100hp. Like the Duk Ling a classic design and fit for the purpose. No hot rods necessary.
*"If the owner adores it, we will adore it"*
What a beautiful sentiment for those with the heart of a servant.
GBS Nice 🇭🇰⛵️🇭🇰
Keep up the good work 🚀
Thank you, I’ll continue on 😊🙏
Some day perhaps!
I always thought Chinese Junk boats where so cool
The way he said “hang gong” 😭
Fragrant Harbor, sounds euphemistic to me.
I would love to see this boat tour other countries. Especially since the current status of China vs the West.
But alas I know it would cost too much, even if it toured local Asian countries. Still... It would be nice to see a piece of this culture stay alive if you know what I mean.
The translations are pretty iffy
Takka - Hakka
It’s a little confusing because he does say Hakka verbally but it is true that the Tanka people are now referred to as 水上人, so I’m wondering if he misspoke.
@@Seatux Not just that. At 1:03 he said in Cantonese "...us fishers are not very cultured people. We don't call ourselves Tanka." The translator somehow turn that into "...our fishing communities generally were not culturally inclined to...."
4:56 What the person said was "but there was a 70% chance of the ship breaking (from the recovery process). Subtitle said "but 70% of the Dukling was damaged." This is just completely off. I was barely paying attention to the subtitles during lunch and I already found two glaring mistakes. I wonder if the other videos are this bad.
@@Seatux Tanka is apparently a sea fairing culture. I don't understand why the Captain referred to them as Hakka.
We're not really a sea base culture.
sad the oldest boat in Hong Kong is only 70 odd years old. Any harbour in australia will have older running boats
Your editing style feels different. Less snappy. Feels like video from other channels.
You are right! Our filmmaking is always informed by the story. This is a big, old, beautiful boat. Deserving of admiration and contemplation.
We wouldn't want to 'montage' through all it's beautiful details! ⛵
Sugoi. ;-;7

The translation of this video seems off - I think he says Hakka not Tanka people.
It's amazing how the government in HK doesn't seem to care about keeping these things alive. This is an iconic ship, people look for it when they are overlooking the harbor. I remember seeing it a couple years ago...if anything they should add more of them.
Since the National Security Law passed, it's not in the hands of the HK government apparently.
Why should they care about private property?
@@jace8785 yeah try to think of an answer yourself. It’s very simple really, a five year old could answer that question
@@hiufgterde Are you saying the government should help old people restore vintage cars too?
@@jace8785 you’re not the brighest person around are you?
acho que ele deveria ser atracado na cidade e virar um restaurante
Looks like that flying boat from lego ninjago 💀💀
😢
Hong Kong has lost its soul with out its junk boats :(
Yes, our lives in HK greatly depend on Junk boats
Ironic how these are the symbol of hk but hk didn’t preserve a lot of them
As if the 6 year old knows what nostalgia means..... :/
Above & Beyond played on the junk.
It has to be replicated like other Made in China products
Amsterdam,
Fantastic ❤😊
Add story to that of Ning Po, and Free China
Always liked junks
Glory to Hong Kong
If its junk, maybe get a new one?
Why does Hong Kong people sound so much better, nicer, and humble than Mainland Chinese. 🤔
They lost / destroyed a lot less of their traditional culture.
Bit of a subjective thing there!

Hakka not tanka. HK are not Japanese
Tanka comes from 艇家, it’s not a Japanese word. It’s a bit confusing since he does say Hakka but it’s true that Tanka people are now referred to as 水上人, so not sure if he misspoke.
