    This is a masterclass in composition: one chord, a beautiful simple theme, and then variations to keep the ear engaged throughout. I can't think of any piece of music as simple yet as exquisite and compelling. Lauridsen is a deeply knowledgeable and skilled composer and an absolute master of his craft.

    Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926)
    Les Chansons des Roses
    Abandon entouré d’abandon,
    tendresse touchant aux tendresses…
    C’est ton intérieur qui sans cesse
    se caresse, dirait-on;
    se caresse en soi-même,
    par son prope reflet éclairé.
    Ainsi tu inventes le thème
    du Narcisse exaucé.
    Abandon surrounding abandon,
    tenderness touching tenderness …
    Your oneness endlessly caresses itself, so they say.
    Self-caressing,
    in its own clear reflection.
    Thus you invent the theme
    of Narcissus fulfilled.

    Very strange interpretation of the piano intro. Do you not know that it is a segue from the previous movement, which would not have been such a spunky tempo? Otherwise, pretty well done.
