The beluga whale believed to be a Russian spy has found a new confidante by playing with a seagull swimming along the water’s surface.
Jan-Olaf Johansen was working on a ship in Hammerfest harbour, Norway, on September 2 when he spotted the white whale under the water near him.
Watching closely, the 49-year-old chief officer watched on amazed as the whale - named Hvaldimir following its surreal rise to fame earlier in 2019 when it was believed to have been being used as a spy by the Russian navy in Norwegian waters - glided gracefully up to the surface, seemingly stalking a bird swimming on the surface.
Jan-Olaf continued to film as the beluga nudged the bird to get its attention before chasing after its new friend playfully for a good few minutes.

It's the fact that the seagull wasn't trying to fly away really gets me. It somehow knows the beluga wasn't hostile from the beginning.

This is rare and incredible footage! Clearly the seagull knows the whale is just playing, which is extraordinary already. How calm the bird is! And the fact that the whale is using the fish as an incentive to get the bird to interact with him shows a high intelligence. He is bored, and wants mental stimulation and a friend. Wow! I'm so moved seeing this interaction. I think the whale would enjoy some human interaction and toys and possibly training. As long as he is free, that would be enrichment not captivity. Thank you for this marvelous look into the whale's mind.
The seagull was eaten they did not show it. Like orca they play with their food and when ready they open wide and they are gone

There’s a video somewhere of a bird feeding fish which is also pretty cool. I guess animal’s intuition isn’t blunted by technology, they communicate without needing words or body language.
Beluga also tried to give the bird head.
Maybe the bird is feeling not so well and the Beluga cares and is trying to sheer him up and stay close to him.

What’s really amazing is how thin and fragile looking the gull’s legs are,yet the beluga is so gentle that the bird feels no worry. Those little legs could easily be broken but everybody is just cool with the situation.
Awww!!! this is the sweetest thing I have ever seen!! The Beluga has a smiley face and it's really playing with the seagull. When the Beluga wanted to give the fish back to the Seagull I was finished. I feel a sense of the utmost joy watching these two creatures having fun. Pure and innocent.

One could argue that befriending a beluga whale at sea is a survival skill of the highest order.

OMG this is infinitely touching. A Beluga whale feeding a fish to a seagull and playing with the seagull. Belugas are highly intelligent beings equal to humans you can see the size of their brains. This one has huge compassion.
Cetaceans are super intelligent. They just lack the skills we have such as gadget usage and building civilization. Some researchers think that orca has IQ equivalent to 16 year old human. I would treat whales as respectable individuals because they are.
Orcas might have no option, but we have. We shouldnt eat cetaceans, they are not like other animals. its like cannibalism.
There are so many odd things in this video!! Like:
1- why aren't they fighting for the fish?
2- why does the seagul isn't afraid of that strange huge animal trying to "bite" it?
3- why are belugas so cute??
Beluga whales don't eat birds lol they only eat small fish. And they love to play with their mouths. If the whale really wanted that seagul would be gone in a second.
They are also damn smart and playful. You can just swim around next to them without any danger. They might even give you a ride on their back.
I think animals can communicate to each other that who are friends or who are hunters, as human knows who is the criminal, who are friends.

@b00ger901 Nope. He's not trying to eat the seagull. Hvaldimir is solitary and hasn't found a pod after his discovery yet. He's been hunting for fish and is very friendly to humans and birds. He's just looking for a friend as Belugas are extremely social and he's all alone. Also Belugas don't eat seagulls.

This is a beluga sorely missing family/friends. They are group animals, s/he is lonely so will lay with even a slightly weird seagull. Pretty cool too
It's a beluga whale trained by russians, it escaped to Hammerfest, Norway where it now can be found. When it was found it had an harness, the whale is completely tame and seeks human contact. We've named him Hvaldimir. He's being fed since he's not capable of finding food himself. Would be nice if he got a mate tho
