I think Castles ofBurgundy got a well deserved face lift - a blinged out version to make it stand with the expensive backgammon and chess sets - I think the game is a master piece. That said I'm more than happy with the original box. It's absolute perfection.
Being a linguist I thought this should be about games so f**king awesome, they never got a second edition. Which brings to mind... It would be nice to see ToP 10 games that need a 2nd Edition, but never got one.
My choices to add would be Dominion, Carcassonne, Arkham Horror and Dune Imperium. As you pointed out some had to be changed/reprinted due to licence issues so I can forgive them 2nd editions. I agree that it pisses me off that publishers reprint games with different artwork rendering your copy useless if you want new expansions. I also can't agree enough it's getting ridiculous with these deluxe games that are just a ripoff with Castle of Burgundy being a prime example.
Carcassonne a prime example. Fine do a 2nd edition, but making the tiles incompatible with the original was a dick move. Similar for the new version of quest for el dorado.
One good thing on Castles of Burgundy deluxe was that I able to print out the backs of the tiles that explain what each does from their Kickstarter to shrink down to paste to the backs of my cheap copy I got after the deluxe was announced. My friend has the deluxe so I can play it if I want to feel the majesty.
Usually true, and then there is Incan Treasure, the revamped version of Diamant. The original is completely devoid of any 'woke' issues, being thematic but placed is some random place with jewels and treasures, has cute little boxes to hide the accumulated score of a player until the end, and adorable character names that wink to Clue. Incan Treasure: you are looting historical artifacts from a known civilization and you have nowhere to to hide your loot, so the press your luck game becomes meaningless around round 3-4/5. They also got rid of the 'treasure' mechanic in Incan Treasure for some reason.

@xGarrettThiefx that was spearheaded by Elizabeth "Wingspan" Hargrave (the fucking idiot) and is the one of the reasons I'm very much against buying her games
When the reprint was announced I had just bought my copy of Ethnos on the secondary market. If I had known before, I probably wouldn't have bought it. Now I'm very glad I did. The new version looks like a straight downgrade.
I'd have included Descent: Journeys in the Dark. The first edition was a behemoth on the table, but it was tons of fun. Then they made a second edition and tried to 'streamline' the game by leaving a lot of the game out, changing the way pretty much everything worked, and making it a campaign game from the get-go instead of individual quests meant to be played over an evening. THEN they had to go and make a THIRD version, which they renamed to "Legends of the Dark" because they made it so that you need an app to play and without it you have just a giant box of components that you can't do anything with.
The Firefly Collectors Edition didn't need to be a thing. The only reason that it interests people is that they don't keep the expansions in print, so people have trouble finding various ones of htem and this allowed people to buy them again, all be it all at once.
I adore Kemet myself and backed the Blood and Shit Edition. I regret it to this day, because they fucked up the artwork so badly, especially the map. I hate it so much, yet it bothers me to have it in my basement. Nobody wants to buy it off me either, because everybody knows it sucks. Gladly I kept my 1st Edition and just like you said, I wanna get buried with it, like a bloody pharao. :D ❤
What Puerto Rico really needs is getting rid of that left-right binding. And making the University-Factory price swap canon. That's it. Maybe wrap it in that wholesome 1987 theme to not destroy the marketing
Age of Innovation is our first TM game. Picked it because it seemed to be the most solid at 2p. We're really getting into it, but i didnt need the re-theme. TM 2 would have been fine. Just sayin its worth a look if you ever get a chance.
Robinson Crusoe Deluxe.. it turns out a game where stackable tokens are a main mechanism doesn't work great when you turn those tokens into non-stackable miniatures that take up 80% of the box... who knew? But after many complaints from the 1% of backers that have actually played the game to identify this issue, they'd surely gave us an option to get all the other content without the miniatures right?.. oh wait..
For real. I backed it having never played the original. (Based on the Bollocks review, btw). Our copy finally came and we played it a couple weeks ago. We realized pretty quick minis were not gonna work. Not to mention all the fiddliness of the hut building. Luckily they included the wood disks and stickers as well. Deep regrets overpaying and waiting the 3 years for it, when I could have just picked up a basic version.
Ethnos/Archeos Society - Ethnos is such a great design, and ppl gripe about it looking ugly. I don’t even see the artwork when I play cuz it’s such an intense experience with quick turns and total angst 😅
I love the comments about games feeling dirty and cheap. Those seem like such derogatory terms, but at this point games have no character, they're so sterile. I find myself being drawn to games that have some character. Because of that, it keeps feeling like I'm have to go to older games to find it, like the original Santiago, you know the African version. Great video, it will definitely upset some publishers, but hopefully, they're humble enough to think about it. Thanks as always.
I agree with most of the list…. I disagree with eclipse though for one main reason. The setup and tear down of the first edition was one of the worst experiences and the new one makes the experience smooth as butter. Other things being equal. Oh and I was the sucker that bought Spartacus hopping they would made expansions available if I supported it. Yeah daddy warbucks over here.
Some people would make an argue that that's why you should play it digitally (but I don't play board games digitally - there is a reason as to why they are "board" games - and the experience - both tactile (mainly) and social, that you don't get while playing over technology.
Had the original 1986 Fireball Island growing up, lost it, then nostalgically reacquired a few years ago. It's still a blast and we break it out here and there because it's simple but chaotic. Got the new one and then sold it shortly after...all they needed to do was maybe make the island bigger (keep the same classic paths) add more unpredictable routes for the fireballs, maybe more bridges/traps...not added complexity, tokens and card crap. Completely removed the fun factor!
100% agree about Kemet. I liked the Castles of Burgundy second edition - it was almost the same as the first one, but with a different design and with lots of expansions. Stupid I - bought Kickstarter edition and I am not playing the game anymore as the new edition is hard to take to the table. It is in a huge box, it weighs a lot - I cannot take it anywhere. Terra Mystica is a great game and is still printed, not sure if all those new editions ruin the old one. If one wants to buy the original, it is still possible.
Village would be my #1, Libertalia would be #2, and Puerto Rico #3. I'm glad I didn't bite when those came out. I'm keeping my originals, and a little extra green in my pockets.
I was gifted a copy of the new Castles of Burgundy. It was from an unexpected friend and it means the world to me because of that. It's also my favorite game. That being said: I still have my 1st edition copy because the one thing that most gamers haven't tired of, but I have is BIG BOX SYNDROME. They whine about the size on their shelves but for me...the REAL problem is the ability to take it with you, the amount of set up and the amount of space it takes on a table. CoB, again, is my favorite game but I do face hesitation when picking it and I'd almost never throw it in my game bag to take somewhere over the other copy. My goal to saying all this is that it's not all sunshine and roses with these big box deluxe versions and I've never wanted to be someone who glosses over the negatives of even things I love. :D Also...for Spartacus...I also have the full game and I highly suggest keeping an eye out for the deluxe version of a game called "Flow of History" people will sell it for cheap and it has the PERFECT small metal coins that are thick like Roman coins would have been. Get a few sets of those and it helps not have sweat infused cardboard coins! HAHAHA!
Azul: Master Chocolatier was a limited edition chocolate themed version of the original Azul and despite including miniature promotional expansions, it's missing a lot of its predecessor's charm.
Love the topic of this video, and generally agree. Kemet would be my #2 unnecessary 2nd edition, and #1 is probably the X-Wing miniatures game. FFG/Asmodee took a brilliant self-contained system, mauled it to shreds and tossed it in a filthy alley to rot in the darkness.
I am absolutely with you on the “castles of burgundy” - we absolutely love this game and have the version from 2020 (?) which is wonderful except for the tiny writing on the little hex-tiles. But I too think it is absolutely insane to pay 200 € for the Deluxe Version! Ok, the hex-tiles are 30 % bigger, so it might be more visionfriendly for our old eyes, but bigger also means it takes up more space on the table.🙄 Even if I had this amount of money: I would not buy the Deluxe Version😮🎉
When you need a replacement outer box for BSG let me know. I'll include the Broken Token insert. Both on the house. I also have the Exodus Expansion box that I can send along which will double your fight against the ravages of time. I bought the wooden LaserOx insert and outer wooden box so I'm safe for hopefully my lifetime and have stored the extras. My BSG core box isn't Mint but the Exodus box is near mint. That said I suspect my BSG core box may be better off than yours but I would wait until I receive a nice Awaken Realms packaging box and re-use it to ship these off to you. Their packaging is beyond ridiculously good. I guess if anyone local in your area has been storing these empty BSG related boxes it may make more sense for them to pitch in before someone tries to toss these across the seas your way. Just to be clear, this is just an offer to help you with empty boxes and storage inserts not the actual game material. That said you might appreciate doubling the shelf life of your BSG box. Of course if you follow my footsteps and get the LaserOx box...you would be in the same boat I am in. Sorry I tossed Pegasus and Daybreak. Others in my boat may have kept all 4 boxes for display. I'm guessing quite a few people may be out there with extra BSG boxes as a result of Broken Token and LaserOx storage.
I would go with Fury of Dracula. The last meaningful edition was the Second Edition. After that 3rd and 4th were a waste of time. The colour pallete of the later editions was absolutely rank. 2nd Edition was peak FOD. Also. Planet Steam. The first edition by Ludo Art was a fantastic beast of a game allegedly modelled on the old PC game MULE. Fantasy Flight got hold of it and turned it into a tiny box of wank completely devoid of the joyous excess of the original.
Seeing copies of Kemet Blood & Sand on the used market as low as CDN $80 punched unplayed. Still feel no need to change from our 1st Edition. We just played a 3 player and 4 player game of Kemet (1st edition with Seth) and it was amazing!!
I would argue with the 7 wonders entry. Yes, it may be frustrating for the owners of the original that they are making the new expansions compatible only with the 2nd edition but the 2nd edition actually made improvements. The icons are more obvious, the building cards can be kept in front of you with only their colored headline visible (it contains all the information relevant for the rest of the game), and the wonders are more balanced. I think it was a neccessary improvement.
+1, I love the many little tweaks they made on the card abilities (the really subtle ones, like Altar chaining into Pantheon, are genius), made Second Ed. feel like a much deeper game strategy-wise.
I think the most important thing is the balance changes that they made. They made some much necessary buffs/nerfs to certain wonders and more. After playing second edition on BGA, it always feels a bit odd playing the first one over the table
I think of 2.0 more as another expansion than a full new game. I really like the spy and sandworm additions, but its not necessarily needed (like expansions) unless youve run the base game into the ground
Don't know if it counts as a board game but Games Workshop constantly making and remaking new entire book shelves of rules and compendiums for Warhammer that then aren't even accurate because you need to download some updated PDF before they start preparing you to buy the next version in 2 years time is probably the worst offender
I do agree to the Kemet Blood and sand edition. Fortunately I did get hold of a copy of the first edition for 20$, and it is much better looking in almost all respects. You did miss out on one of the worst reprints "ever". Everdell Complete Edition. I heard that they did release a new expansion after that one so it should be called "EVERDELL THE ALMOST COMPLETE EDITION". 😂 And with a price tag of "only" some 350$ !!!??? WTF.
I knew Puerto Rico would be here (and deservedly so). FYI, after more than two years, corrected copies of Puerto Rico 1897 can finally be purchased in the UK as of Feb 2024 - I grabbed one recently because I never owned the original, but I've been waiting ages for non-f*'d copies to finally come into circulation. Oh, and the only way to tell a good copy from bad old stock is that they (the corrected ones) are not shrinkwrapped, and they've got these little clear circular stickers sealing the box closed. Their handling of this will certainly make me think twice before making any future purchases of Ravensburger products.
I mean the guy behind the retheme wanted a mechanic where workers are paid, but without any concern for gameplay balance in sight. 1 doubloon is enough money to build a shop, so paying them with that mean they'll simply build their own plantations...
@@revimfadli4666 Did that actually carry through to the retail product? I'm not an expert on the subject, but all the information I've read so far seems to indicate none of the rules were changed from the original?
So on point with most CoB. Why in the world anyone would spend $100+ on the delux edition is beyond me. Someone of FB asked if they should buy it if they has never played CoB. People are crazy out here in these board game streets.
Goomhaven 2nd Edition is in the works. I'm still on the fence whether to upgrade my pledge (if they let me). I guess TI missed this list because it was laser focused on "2nd edition" and its already on to its 4th. I guess special editions like TTR 10th and TTR 15th and Cosmic Encounter 42th Anniversary editions also wouldn't make the cut. ok but I just got the Awaken Realms Robinson Crusoe edition too.
Arkham Horror 3rd - took a general thematic board game and made it scenario based since that is what Fantasy Flight has inadvertently turned their Lovecraft stuff into. Betrayal at House on the Hill - the original game was very random, but now it's very streamlined. Also while they did clear up the process of splitting into Traitor & Heroes midway they still have goofs about who knows what does what. There are also less scenarios and stupid ones. WTF wants to go to a creepy haunted house to just end up cleaning it for better resale?
@@ErmacFellwalker 3rd has it where you have about 6 "reasons" for exploring the house at the start, and then the Haunts are given through those reasons in addition to the Omen/Room. It's not awful. It's a nice surprise just as 2nd Ed. there are some non dangerous Haunts of Buried Treasure or Ghost Playing Hide & Seek. @@andrewloch3563 yeah, i remember there being a lot of backlash about it especially since the 1st edition wasn't that old. This was in the earlier years of this current board gaming Renaissance so I don't think we were used to major 2nd editors yet.

I have to hand it to these companies. They are laughing all the way to the bank. It's like PT Barnum, "there's a sucker born every minute." But for board games, it's one every 10 seconds.
That is a neat idea for a Top 10, and I think you made a pretty good list. I think the only one I really disagree with you on is Castles of Burgundy. The original edition looked like total dog crap and actively detracted from the game (and the "anniversary" one wasn't much better). It was also hard to play because all the beige art on the buildings looked the same and it was hard to remember what did what. The new "all-in" edition with all minis and everything is absurd and over the top, way more than I would want. However, the regular Special Edition looks great and feels great to play. Additionally, the new edition comes with all the expansions already baked in, while the original did not. So your $15 game becomes more like $30-$40 by the time you hunt down the expansions. And the newest expansion is only available in the Special Edition, so even then you don't have all the same gameplay. I would happily pay $100 for a game that looks and feels great to play over $40 for a game that looks and feels like some crappy Print-n-Play prototype. When you combine that with actual quality-of-life improvements like text on the back of buildings and monastery tiles, it's a slam dunk. I'm actually to the point where I would refuse to play an older version of Castles of Burgundy and would just rather play something else instead if the original is the only option.
My 8 year old loves fireball island. And I enjoy it with all the expansions. Fun playing 2 explores each in 2 player game. It's to slow with more then 3 players.
Interesting list. Cyclades might fall into this category as well, but i hope not. At least i don't own it yet. Eclipse 2nd was good for us because we wouldn't have gotten 1st edition. Just flew totally below our radar. But i understand all your points. For me it's Mage Wars. With the reprint they split the gane into two different games (arena and academy, an easier, watered down version). But you could still use academy in arena and it just got very cramped and confusing.
This channel is a mix of the Dice Tower and a Guy Richie film. And in that case, I definitely see Tom Vasal as the Brick top of the internet board gaming scene.
I only have kemet blood and sand, but I think the components are nicer than the original. Miniatures are a little bigger, the trays are nice. I get the hate on the map, but ah well… can’t win out on everything.
Age of Innovation isn't really a reprint. It's got several new mechanics, all of the factions are new, and the components are modular which means you can draft each piece of your faction starting out.
Supposedly, it started off as an expansion to Terra Mystica too. Tbh, of the entire list, this is the one I most disagree with. Gaia Project and Age of Innovation all feel differently to Terra Mystica, and they all bring something different to the table. I love them all and own them all
@@ErmacFellwalkerThe only thing is - between AoI and regular Terra Mystica - to me, AoI is better in every single way. There is no reason to own Terra Mystica with AoI - as it replaces it (for me).
@JJ_TheGreat probably correct, BUT Terra Mystica has the Merchants of the Sea expansion (which I love) AND my friends printed me bespoke resin buildings for each race (unique sculpts) which are nothing short of incredible and elevated the game for me 😆
For what it is worth I have played Terra mystica, and Gaia project…. And Gaia just improved some of the imbalance that was in terra mystica ( some of the factions were super powered)
@@xshadowscreamx I don't feel that way, it feels cheaper too. And more while it added a new camel, it's changed so much the expansion the original had is no longer compatible.
I expect similar to COB. Bringing expansions together into a single big box, with every possible component blinged up whether sensible or not. COB surprised me in how many people bought into this ultimate in bling, so I expect similar will happen for Puerto Rico. I'm not the market for it, but I'm confident there is a market out there.
2:00 “Why they had to touch the original (Puerto Rico), I don’t know.” Because a grifter named Jason Perez made some videos about it so he could con his way into a “creative consultant” job.
8:00 Matagot redid their own logo just like Kemet recently too and made it worse. It was so different I didn’t even realize that it was the same company at first!
So what about good 2nd editions / 2nd iterations? Here's a couple to start Restoration games did a super job on Thunder Road Vendetta (BGB's video on the original showed how dire and dated it was, the new version a LOT more fun). I've not played Voyages of Marco Polo, but really like Marco Polo II.
I think Kemet got worse with the art, but better with the balance. They also improved the consistency of the iconography (even though it mostly got uglier). Also, you got it wrong about the minis, they're bigger. Unfortunately, the map isn't really scaled to fit them as bigger, so in cities (with the pyramids) they barely fit. The game also incorporated the Ta-Seti tiles, and some of the rules that were unique to that box. It didn't incorporate the Path board though. B&S is basically like buying Kemet + Ta-Seti. B&S is both better and worse, which does make it a bad second edition. It seems like when Matagot pivoted to crowdfunding, they basically shit the bed. They're just not putting out quality that justifies the price tag for these products.
The reworking of Tribune was horrendous that I traded for an older copy before they all fleeted away. In my opinion the Kickstarter didn’t do huge numbers because the art looked so bad comparatively to the original.
Age of Innovation is Terra Mystica with a built in expansion. If one does not own Terra Mystica then they should get Age of Innovation. Gaia Project is different enough you could justify having it and TM or AoI but it’s also not that different either that it’s a hard sell to say it is
I think I understand his point. Cthulhu doesn't suck but it is currently so massively overused as a theme in board games that I now roll my eyes every time another new Cthulhu board game is released.

While i do agree on the Castles of Burgundy megadelux ks edition i do not agree on the Castles of Burgundy 20th anniversary edition, which i own, and was a very welcomed reprint with a graphic restyling and some expansions of the original game at a fair cost. That was (and is) a way for some people - me included - of getting a very good classic game which wasnt available otherwise
Space Hulk didn't need a 2nd edition. Everybody who knows about the differences between 1st and 2nd edition agrees. Then they went and made a 3rd/4th edition, which is better than 2nd, but still not as good as 1st. Although those map tiles and blip counters are fantastic, even if they warp too easily.
I can see why publishers go for reprints as it's a lazy way to cash in on a popular product, but I think in most cases these reprints annoy the core fan base rather than amplify further interest. Personally I'd prefer them to make a sequel and offer something mildly different (extending the story, blah blah), rather than void my version of the game and replace it with a more expensive reprint.
Disagree about Kemet. I don't care about the 20% larger monsters (but many people like that), the change of the map colors is meh to me (not a real improvement, not terrible either), but functionality was slightly improved. I don't care much about new assembly pyramids vs old style dice. One gets points for simple practicality, the other for theme. All of the above is unimportant to me or just a very small change to slightly better or slightly worse. These certainly aren't reasons for a worthwhile second edition. But there were improvements that make the second edition objectively better. The useless, boring, redundant design mistake Level 3 VP tiles got replacements. Solid improvement. Scaling setup by better to number of players is an improvement. The tile tablets are a massive improvement for storage and gameplay. The whole box organisation is better now. The VP track is a nice enhancement. Starting with a lvl 1 tile is a small rules improvement, but still an improvement. There's more detail improvements in the tiles, DI cards and rules. B&S isn't a must-have replacement over original Kemet. But it's overall a clear improvement and fixes some issues. Original Kemet still works fine and nobody who owns it has to run and get it replaced. But given the choice I would always opt for B&S because it's better.
@@BoardGameBollocks I own all of the original Kemet, including all expansions - don't remember Tau Seti getting rid of the VP tiles - will look that up later. Yes, you can buy the trays, but doesn't change the fact that these were part of the 2nd edition KS. And as I said there are more fixes in the tiles and DI cards. Initiative was clearly overpowered - there have been forum threads about it for years. Original Kemet wasn't broken, but it did have flaws and issues and B&S fixed those. Clearly an improvement. Owners of original Kemet can fix some of the issues with a print-out of the 1.9 rules and buying the tile trays. But for anybody who buys their first Kemet B&S is the better option.

The scariest words today are when a publisher in any media says they are remaking something for "modern audiences".
Usually true, and then there is Incan Treasure, the revamped version of Diamant.

Don't worry you didn't miss out on ethnos - you can easily get a second hand copy cheap.
And here we are, months from Awaken Realms re-re-releasing a deluxified Puerto Rico
With AI art.
Don’t have a problem with AI art
great list. I would add Cyclades, Glen More and Dune Imperium
Cyclades 2nd edition isn’t out yet
Right out of the gate, I agree 100% with your number 10. And I'm Puerto Rican.
"You are basically a liar" is my new favourite retort.
YES! You are 100% right about BSG, man.
I love how much you hate Cthulhu. Haha
A study in Emerald, Löwenherz and Ethnos are the ones to come to mind directly !
Robinson Crusoe Deluxe.. it turns out a game where stackable tokens are a main mechanism doesn't work great when you turn those tokens into non-stackable miniatures that take up 80% of the box... who knew?
But after many complaints from the 1% of backers that have actually played the game to identify this issue, they'd surely gave us an option to get all the other content without the miniatures right?.. oh wait..
I didn’t back CE because I absolutely knew minis were a bad idea. So glad I passed.
shit
I agree with Libertalia but the new tiebreaker mechanic is much better. Wish I could incorporate it into the original
if only it had everdell's vibrant art...
Ethnos/Archeos Society - Ethnos is such a great design, and ppl gripe about it looking ugly. I don’t even see the artwork when I play cuz it’s such an intense experience with quick turns and total angst 😅
tbf archeos has more variations in how the majority controls work. It didn't even feel like a map in Ethnos since adjacencies don't matter
Agree on many of these... not with Age of Innovation though. The modularity adds a lot to the Terra Mystica gameplay.
Agreed! AoI replaces Terra Mystica (to me).
Stefan Feld´s City Collection: totally redundant. The deluxe reprint of Castles of B.: hilarious.
ks loves to take advantage of Feld fans
Some of the reprinted games in that series are hard to find. Not that that justifes overpriced new versions...
great list and i've had the same thoughts on almost all of them as well.
Also...for Spartacus...I also have the full game and I highly suggest keeping an eye out for the deluxe version of a game called "Flow of History" people will sell it for cheap and it has the PERFECT small metal coins that are thick like Roman coins would have been.
I had not played 1st edition of eclipse but love the second version.
4:50 I’m glad somebody come out and said it here I thought I was the only one that doesn’t care for the over saturation of lovecraftian product.
Sad to see AR are looking at a Deluxe reprint of Puerta Rico, well on the bright side may be able to pick up an affordable copy of the first edition.
But it also removed the ability to play the game with 2 players - so would you really call that an "improvement"?...
Just saying.
@@JJ_TheGreat Have you played 7 Wonders Duel?
For me it’s the Dune Imperium 2.0
Not that I care at all, I am happy with my 1.0 with the expansions and custom insert I have for it.
Simply gave up on 40k for that reason.
I would love to see Restoration Games put your “quote” on their box if they ever get to reprint it again. Would be f**king awesome!
I do agree to the Kemet Blood and sand edition. Fortunately I did get hold of a copy of the first edition for 20$, and it is much better looking in almost all respects.
You did miss out on one of the worst reprints "ever". Everdell Complete Edition. I heard that they did release a new expansion after that one so it should be called
"EVERDELL THE ALMOST COMPLETE EDITION".
Cleaning it?!? Are you joking??
@@ErmacFellwalker 3rd has it where you have about 6 "reasons" for exploring the house at the start, and then the Haunts are given through those reasons in addition to the Omen/Room.
It's not awful. It's a nice surprise just as 2nd Ed. there are some non dangerous Haunts of Buried Treasure or Ghost Playing Hide & Seek. But in a post Woke/TDS/GamerGate world (2016) where every new cartoon inserts a "Prom" episode or DnD's latest setting is working as baristas in a communist utopia; cleaning house in 3rd Ed stinks of something disingenuous.
Pandemic 2nd edition annoyed me as it's exactly like the first. I bought the upgrade pack but refuse to buy the actual game as my 1st edition works just fine.
I did the same, but at least they offered an upgrade pack
@@andrewloch3563 yeah, i remember there being a lot of backlash about it especially since the 1st edition wasn't that old. This was in the earlier years of this current board gaming Renaissance so I don't think we were used to major 2nd editors yet.
actually i own about 90 games right now but i never bought a 2ed of everything...always buying interesting new games....but i have an area control fetish....battle of rokugan, tammany hall, king is dead, rurik dawn of kiev, kemet, last kingdom...yeah i am gonna buy probable the new el grande :D...so theres something :D
Fully agreed with all of these choices, tbh. In particular the comment about people who pay 200+ for a 15 quid game.
9:49 "you should be ashamed seeing as there are so many starving people in the world" 😂
I have to hand it to these companies. They are laughing all the way to the bank. It's like PT Barnum, "there's a sucker born every minute." But for board games, it's one every 10 seconds.
So happy I went with the first edition of Kemet! :D
Castles of Burgundy's reprint as Deluxe version is yet to get another reprint campaign coming soon....
OMG I love this guy. I don't agree with all of his opinions (some I do, some I don't), but his videos are fantastically entertaining.
My top 3 are Rocco, Great Western Trail, and Mombasa
Great choices
100% agree with you on the BSG reprint of Unfathomable. It may be a faster game, but I have ZERO interest in the Cthulhu theme.
I love them all and own them all
Thank you! Exactly what I am trying too say... And they also added the book mechanic!
@@ErmacFellwalkerThe only thing is - between AoI and regular Terra Mystica - to me, AoI is better in every single way. There is no reason to own Terra Mystica with AoI - as it replaces it (for me).
@JJ_TheGreat probably correct, BUT Terra Mystica has the Merchants of the Sea expansion (which I love) AND my friends printed me bespoke resin buildings for each race (unique sculpts) which are nothing short of incredible and elevated the game for me 😆
I can’t wait to hear your opinion on Cyclades Legendary Edition which is a game that you already own and where things got removed from the original.
We’ll have to wait and see…not sure anything go removed. Maybe parts of the expansions got left out but tbh I can’t remember
For what it is worth I have played Terra mystica, and Gaia project…. And Gaia just improved some of the imbalance that was in terra mystica ( some of the factions were super powered)
Camel up, and Sherif of Nottingham should have been here imo in place if fireball island and unfathomable.
Camel up 2nd edition clearly looks better
@@xshadowscreamx I don't feel that way, it feels cheaper too. And more while it added a new camel, it's changed so much the expansion the original had is no longer compatible.
I'm curious what awaken realms will do with Puerto Rico.
2:00 “Why they had to touch the original (Puerto Rico), I don’t know.”
Because a grifter named Jason Perez made some videos about it so he could con his way into a “creative consultant” job.
Speaks the truth, fuck JP
8:00 Matagot redid their own logo just like Kemet recently too and made it worse. It was so different I didn’t even realize that it was the same company at first!
skymine.. hands off... found a dutch edition of Mombassa, printed the rules in french (sorry im french) and fuck the moon
Hell yeah!!
So what about good 2nd editions / 2nd iterations? Here's a couple to start
Restoration games did a super job on Thunder Road Vendetta (BGB's video on the original showed how dire and dated it was, the new version a LOT more fun).
I've not played Voyages of Marco Polo, but really like Marco Polo II.
I’ll add in - Unmatched, Camel Up 2, Archaeology New Expedition, Ticket to Ride Europe and Imperial Settlers Empires of the North.
Gaia Project is different enough you could justify having it and TM or AoI but it’s also not that different either that it’s a hard sell to say it is
I bought the deluxe version of castles of burgundy and it's f@cking awsome!
"Cthulu sucks..." ??? LOL Time to invest in a LIBRARY CARD, Mate! It's time.
I think I understand his point. Cthulhu doesn't suck but it is currently so massively overused as a theme in board games that I now roll my eyes every time another new Cthulhu board game is released.
@@wbeytel Nosssir! That is not what he said. He said, yes, it is overused AND he said it "sucks", broadly. Harry Potter sucks. Yep. I said it! But...Cthulu??? How dare he! I demand satisfaction!
@@armstronghawkins9183 🤣👍
Just for clarification, I am the one who's in agreement with you that Cthulhu doesn't suck.
Rex: final days of an empire comes to mind. Luckily that's been fixed
You do know Dune had been out of print for who-knows-how-long at the time, and Frank Herbert's estate wasn't letting anyone reprint it?
3:54 It also removed the 2-player game with the 3rd dummy player, as a way to play the game - due to how unpopular it was by most... Therefore, you can no longer play the game with 2 players at all. 😞
You forgot Agricola, which did not need a 2nd edition of Caverna.
Wait... Isn't it the other way around? Because didn't Agricola come before Caverna?
@@JJ_TheGreat Reread the sentence... I didn't say Agricola was the second edition of Caverna... I said Agricola (the first edition) should never have had the second edition (Caverna) made... Yes Agricola came first.
Also Agricola itself relaunched a second edition of itself.
So it's actually a 2x offender.
Can’t wait to see what you think of Hasbro’s THIRD Edition of NEXUS OPS.
I haven’t played the first or second edition yet
You can add tobthe list the renewed Ethnos
Also, Tyrants of the Underdark
For me Claustrophobia would be no 1
It was my number 11
Good choice
While i do agree on the Castles of Burgundy megadelux ks edition i do not agree on the Castles of Burgundy 20th anniversary edition, which i own, and was a very welcomed reprint with a graphic restyling and some expansions of the original game at a fair cost. That was (and is) a way for some people - me included - of getting a very good classic game which wasnt available otherwise
7 Wonders did change things in the 2nd edition... love it or hate it, the balance changes are significant.
Please elaborate
Space Hulk didn't need a 2nd edition. Everybody who knows about the differences between 1st and 2nd edition agrees. Then they went and made a 3rd/4th edition, which is better than 2nd, but still not as good as 1st. Although those map tiles and blip counters are fantastic, even if they warp too easily.
Agreed. Cheap is beautiful
Kemet Tau SETI did away with the VP tiles.
You can buy the tablets from matagot for $10
I could go on but I need a poo…
@oerthling Maybe it was Kemet 1.5 rule set…in any case they got removed.
Blood in the Shit is deffo an inferior product in almost every way.
@@BoardGameBollocks If there are so mand ways it is inferior, then how about sine examples, so we can debate them?
Just saying it's shit doesn't do much.

KS knows Feld fans will just throw money at the same game three times.
