Soldiers in Vietnam carried copies of Owen's poems with them. He is as relevant now as he was then. No one can understand unless they have been under fire what it does to your soul. I treasure every one of Owen's poems. They fill me with horror in beautifully constucted verses. Thank you Mr. Gyllanhal for choosing a poem that tells it like it is. And you are not just "an actor" you are a fine young man as Owen himself once was. He also enjoyed acting and im sure he would have been pleased.
You are not just an actor. You have a unique way of processing and anticipating human emotions as a good person would. You are an amazing actor and without you stories would not come alive.❤
It’s even more fucked up, because he wasn’t even apart of the countries involved yet, when he died the US was yet to be involved although they supplied the war effort. To die for something should be at least to know why you’re going to.
_Dulce et decorum est pro patria mori_ is a quote from the ancient Roman poet Horace, which translates into: *it is sweet and proper to die for one's contry*
It says it all in a microcosm As close to the reality as anyone who didnt witness such horrors could ever be Evocative Evocative Evocative 😢 The Greatest poet of the Great war RIP Wilfred 🙏 ❤
Omg, this reminds me of a specific scene in a movie.. I think it's called "Maurice". It starts with BENEDIC, DOMINE, NOBIS.. It is worth a watch, I promiseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Didn't realise how humble he was. What a thing to do, brilliant.

A poem by Wilfred Owen who was killed 5 days before the armistice in Nov 1918. Rip. Well read sir. Sean Beans recital also worth a listen.
Christopher Eccleston has done the best that I know of
Bean’s was An Anthem for Doomed Youth and The Last Laugh
Why put a thumbs down?? An extraordinary poem
It's one of my favourite poems.

i hate poetry, but this one i learnt at school and it has stayed with me ever since.
Owen had every right to write about war because he lived in it...and died in it too. This fact makes his words so much significant

@@mitchellwright5478 Owen bought it a week before WWI was over, and was in the British Army.

Old Horace said that like a man who’s never been to war
Jake Gyllenhaal handled this very well. Respect.

It is a sweet and noble thing to die for ones country
Dulce et decorem est pro patria mori
father land... not one's country
What a lie it is.

Dulce at decorum est, nonetheless, the great sound of 18th late British troops sound phenomena,at large, really dolce at decorum est.
Feb 28 2022, What have we learned from this? Where are we going?
Not a whole lot it appears.
1:40 "Drownding"
yes i wondered why he kept adding a d to the word drowning? I'm from the UK and realise sometimes they say 'drawling' instead of 'drawing' strange
@@anniejane255 No one says "drawling".
Also said Flug instead of Flung
The hitch
Cool
Nice
Why does it bother me so much that he changed has shells to tired 59s

i know it's not a competition but i do prefer Christopher Eccleston's reading
ruclips.net/video/qB4cdRgIcB8/видео.html - so much more anger in it.
Also the accent and tone matters when reading these although they were both good but eccleston’s was better
I wonder if he knows what the title means
1.52. If you to could watch the wagon we FLUG him in.
Must be the worst recital ever!
At 1"05 it should read ".... of gas-shells dropping softly behind "
Jake is not really good to read poems, this is very flat and flavorless read.
