The moment Taiga runs crying and screaming will always bê heartbreaking for me. its been a decade and it still doesnt fail to affect me.
bc it's so real and a lot of ppl probably can relate. i just noticed how i also got goosebumps in that anime given the blondie and and the back haired guy that were in a very toxic relationship for years always went on and off and only caused each other paun was ended by the blondie telling him he is going to finally move on and then he turned and left and the black haired guy would then turn and go but then suddenly got so scared knowing like damn he means it this time and turned back so desperately almost calling for him but didn't bc he knew it was the best thing for them to end it all but he still was broken bc of how much he depended on how much the blondie depended on him. like i seriously got goosebumps by how realistic and intense that part was made. i just noticed how i saw taiga in that, just in a slight different situation, but still realistic. damn i'm sorry for the long comment but i think it's a scene a lot of ppl should watch.
I always interpreted this as Minori realized how much Taiga loved Ryuji when she saw her break down and realized two things. The first was that it 100% confirmed what she suspected all along and that Taiga did like Ryuji and second while she liked Ryuji her feelings fell way short of Taigas feelings for him. So she decided to quickly and gracefully bow out before she fell any more for Ryuji and made it even more complicated.
Minorin is a big coward, I mean even Ami tried her hands once or twice in the LN, she gave a hint but Ryuji just couldn't get it.
Well, then too, it's one of the best love square I have ever seen, at least better than Nisekoi.

@@josephsolorio748 I mean that from that part where Ami said, "Guilt Gone?" to this part where she literally heard Taiga SIMPing for Ryuji, she had the chance to confront him, but she didn't.
She ignored him as much as possible, even when she knew that Taiga actually liked Kitamura, not Ryuji. It's verified in ep 21 ig that at that time they thought Taiga and Ryuji were just friends, not love interest, ofc Ami knew all along.
Minorin used the worst way, she ignored, she didn't deny or anything, if she was not a coward she would have denied or accepted or at least confronted Ryuji before only, not after she listened to Taiga screaming for Ryuji and when she was pushed off to the edge. It's just like Kosaki from Nisekoi, the whole series, they just hold out their feelings and then say it out loud when everything is over.
That's why you see she was pissed off in ep 23 chocolate scene, she gave up her love for both of them but they were still denying it. She should have done that like 5 eps ago if she had balls, or ovaries, whatever.

I love how serious the talk about the relationships after the episode was, i get sheeras point but you dont have all the pieces thats why is confusing, just like roshi said, there is a lot left to see
especially the after chocolate event, I think that's the point where the shows basically tied all knot, cause after that we got the final arc that not related to the 5 main characters relationship
Ah yes.. My favorite episode.. This episode never failed to make me cry...
This series is basically a harem. But while the other two girls are in love with Ryuji, they both realize that him and Taiga are the most suitable for each other and that they really both need each other. Minori and Ami care just as much about Taiga as they do Ryuji. They basically both just decided that it would be better to help Taiga than to pursue Ryuji themselves. They know that while Ryuji has a crush on Minori, the girl he's actually closest to is Taiga. And as for Ryuji, he just hasn't realized that he's in love with Taiga. He just thinks he wants to protect her as a friend. He doesn't love Minori exactly, it's really more like he idolizes her without really knowing her. And he just thinks of Ami as a friend. The girl he actually knows, understands and cares the most about is Taiga.
This is a repost of a comment I made on the 3 Katanas reaction to episode 19 & 20.
Taiga knows that she has feelings for Ryuji but is confused.
She thinks that Ryuji only sees her as a friend.
She thinks that Ryuji loves Minori.
She thinks that Minori likes Ryuji or is at least open to him.
She still likes Kitamura (but how much now compared to Ryuji?) so she is conflicted.
She knows that Kitamura loves President but is still half-heartedly pursuing him (a River in Egypt sort of thing).
Ryuji knows that he has feelings for Taiga but is confused.
He thinks that Taiga only sees him as a friend.
He still likes Minori, but how much of his pursuit is based on momentum?
He doesn't know who Minori likes but hopes it's him.
Minori likes Ryuji.
She knows that Taiga likes Ryuji. She THOUGHT that she may have been wrong when Taiga was convincing her to go to the school party but then saw Taiga's anguish.
She decided to sacrifice her own romantic happiness for Taiga's sake plus she is serious about non-romantic endeavors (sports).
(Her self-sacrifice explains her anger in a later episode. Chocolates, anyone?)
She knows that the end solution should be Ryuji x Taiga.
Ami likes Ryuji (because he is the only one that sees her true personality and doesn't always talk about how "mature" she is) but is not pursuing (remember the "maybe a new start for us" that Ryuji didn't hear and that she said didn't matter if he didn't hear it).
She sees pretty much the whole picture and is rolling her eyes in frustration over all of the misperceptions.
Since she sees the whole picture she knows that any feelings she has for Ryuji are doomed to be unrequited so she does not pursue.
She sees that Ryuji and Minori are almost acting as parents to Taiga and knows that this is not a good place for any of them.
She knows that the end solution should be Ryuji x Taiga.
Nobody has Ami figured out.
Kitamura loves President. He is not interested in anyone else.
Kitamura is the real asshole, well after this episode at least the relationships get more linear and cooldown a bit. Freaking love it.

(Alone together in storeroom gathering Christmas decorations.)
Ami: "It was wrong to begin with. Better wake up, before someone gets hurt. Forget this ever happened, and start over."
Ami is laying on her side and pulls her legs towards to her chest.
Ami: (quietly) "Then maybe... I could get a a fresh start with you, too." (puts thumbnail against her lips)
Ryuji: "Huh? What was that?" (nani?)
Ami: "Nothing. If you didn't hear me, it doesn't matter."
Ami gets up and says to forget that they even had this talk.
BTW, I've realized that a lot of people don't get the "River in Egypt" joke. The river is the Nile. So, De Nile. Ain't that funny?

Not gonna lie, this moment is what solidified Toradora as my favorite romance story.
I would say, the being unfair point is correct but for different reasons. They are being unfair to themselves, at least Taiga and Minori. Well, Taiga in the next episodes. They both think they must let the other have their happiness with Ryuuji, and he is caught in between. Again going back to what Ami said to Minori last time about being guilty.
Additionally, I can also see Minori's side. She knows Ryuuji likes her, but she also knows he CARES for Taiga, which in my opinion is a deeper emotion.
this is my favorite episode in the entire series, the moment taiga realizes her feelings for Ryuuji and runs after him, so powerful i love it!

Minori is taking one right between the eyes for Taiga. Minori gets the rawist deal of anyone in this series. She loves Ryuji and Ryuji wants to confess but she sacrifices herself for her friend.
The upsetting this about this is that you don't get to pass off someone like a commodity to someone else because you think that they care for each other. I get that they're teens, but most people dealing with someone like Minorin irl would recognize that this person is playing games.
Minorin shut Ryuji down all the way up until this point, long before the two ever got to develop feelings for each other. If anything Minorin's cowardice allowed those feelings to bloom. In the end, it's unfortunate, but it's hard to understand a girl who wouldn't just reject the guy outright. The only one who was being smart through the entire ordeal was Ami, which is why she eventually had to lay hands on her

Ryuji making Taiga’s Christmas by dressing up in a bear suit and all is still one of the sweetest moments for me in my years of watching anime. And the moment Taiga realized she needed him and went after him screaming and crying still hits me hard. I don’t remember a lot from this show cause I watched it so long ago but this scene I’ll always remember.

Ryuuji always does do everything for Taiga. He always be there for her to chin up❤ What a beautiful Christmas feeling I was crying so hard😭😭😭😭😭😭
For once, I have to honestly disagree with Sheera here. I think you're looking at Taiga and her feelings throughout the show in the wrong way this time. Kitamura was always a superficial love interest for her, and someone that I think she liked the idea of more than the actual thing in practice.
However, in regard to Ryuuji, we see a lot of instances up until this point that show that Taiga really likes him but won't admit it to herself because she knows he likes Minori/prob knows Minori likes him back considering they're best friends. The pool scene where she tells everyone he's hers in a fit of rage, the scene at the vacation house where she has her feet on his back and talks about how she gets so flustered around Kitamura but it's just so easy with him and even ponders to herself what could be, even Episode 2 where he says he will always stay by her side like Dragon and Tiger and she blushes. Remember, she even gets mad/almost jealous when Minori and Ryuuji get locked in together. Why would she feel that way if she was happy with them getting together in the end and was head over heels for Kitamura herself? Kitamura was almost a crutch for her to not fall too hard for Ryuuji in a way. One that was never going to work out in the long run.
So it's really hard for her to express her emotions openly because of the circumstances she's found herself in (where she's supposed to be helping the guy SHE LIKES get with someone else, her best friend no less), but I think she's basically always really liked Ryuuji. This is just the first time she's honest with herself over it and fights back against the idea of Ryuuji and Minori ending up together. It's the first time she's truly selfish over it too (which she definitely should be, go get your man girl!). True to herself even. I don't think Kitamura liking the president over her honestly changes the script in this case. I think she still falls for Ryuuji all the same. She's happiest when she's with him. He completes her.
Edit: Also, Sheera stated that Taiga got rejected by Kitamura. She didn't. She would've if she had told him she liked him, but she never got that far with him. She never fully pursued him to the point of rejection. I think she never got there because along the way slowly but surely she started to realize the true person she was after was the guy helping to set her up with what she thought she liked and wanted. During this, she eventually realized what she actually wanted was right beside her the entire time.
Unless we're talking about him rejecting her all the way back in Episode 2 when she barely even knew Ryuuji at that point. Which would make no sense in the conversation they were having cuz nothing was fully pursued there either lol in fact, it was at the beginning of the show before Taiga could even start developing feelings for Ryuuji.

I would make the argument that Kitamura *did* reject Taiga in episode 2, just not openly: She says I love you, and he responds with "How do you feel about Takasu?... OK, I see where this is going, I think we are going to be great *friends* over the following year." He shuts her down while also pivoting her focus towards Ryuji who he already knows is a good influence on her due to her already changing her demeanor quite a bit due to his influence.

On this episode I always like to remind people that the Toradora VN picks off right after the events of this episode.
If you ever feel like you haven't had enough Toradora or aren't 100% satisfied with the ending, this Visual Novel is the answer for you! It's the real deal with lots of love poured into every character and every single ending is worth seeing.
Honestly, I like the VN way more than the actual anime. It just goes so much deeper.
Roshi be calling the YEAH every time something somehow or really over the tone happens but when it doesnt he sure has his mind in one place .

To know something is truly real is a wonderful thing. Rather than never fully commited and put yourself out there for rejection. There are plenty of people out there talk wise shit about abstract love while couldnt experience it themself I think. The show does a great job showing how confusing young love is.
Keep in mind these characters are all teenagers. At that age they are all crushing over each other and everyone, so rejection is very common. And both Taiga and Ryuuji are probably
the most naive ones, as they never noticed they liked each other because they were both chasing someone else. Maybe not everyone had similar situations during their high school life but
I had and this anime always reminds me of those days. I think the creator did a great job writing these characters and how their deal with their relationship with each other.

All the happy sht going on, then ryuuji actually runs to taiga cause he doesn t want her to be alone and boy is that the happiest you see her in the whole serie up to this point.
And ofc the break down, the moment she realizes ryuuji weight in her heart and completely breaks her mask.
Ngl i feel that she would have actually confessed right then had ryuuji not be a moron and actually held back from going away.

Taiga beginning to realize the full weight of her feelings for Ryuji, and Minori (her best friend) sees this. Minori can see how much they mean to each other, and the feelings yet to be revealed, and she chooses to move away before her feelings become too strong.
I love Minorin and but one thing that did frustrate me about her is how she never lets Ryuuji talk whenever he does try to talk about this stuff. She always talks over him and decides stuff on her own, hurting herself on the process.
And this reaction to the show really makes it more clear to me is that they're just not right for each other. She's a great girl but has her own growing of her own to do before she'll ever be with anyone

can't help but feel for both Ami and Minori. They are good people and love doesn't come that strong that often.
Minori has had her moments of wisdom and she's respectable in her intentions, but she hadn't had help from anyone. And Ami is just a sigma female who needed to grow up a little more than she thought she did, but most of all Ami just couldn't catch a W.
Not a lot of anime have this solid of a supporting cast without being a harem or some other nonsense. This show is goated.

The entire situation makes me angry because taiga was an azz hole to ryuji all the time even if it was in her own way to show her affection. Then she gets to experience her love life with the guy she likes even if it doesnt go the way she expected. Then because she cant get with the guy she really likes, she decides to run outside last minute to stop him from finally getting what hes been after the entire time, and in doing so, ruins his chances with the girl he likes because the girl he likes is transparent as hell. Obviously ryuji starts to get feelings for taiga because thats human nature if your around someone long enough. On top of that, hes so in love with minori he fails to see the love the model girl with the blue hair has for him which i think was the best fit for him. All that to say, Ryuji got the short end of the stick in this show.

Sorry in advance for the novel, but I got some feelings… tl;dr I think that the Manime Matt and Riyogaa Toradora YT reviews capture a lot of my feelings on the show.
Regarding where the girls stand, both Taiga and Minori are way too stubborn to act on their own feelings. They’re trying to be “selfless” the whole time while also genuinely being afraid to be open, but they’re actually just making it difficult on everyone by not being honest. But You as the audience should know at this point that all three of the girls like him… Ami is overtly open about it because she’s the most honest about it. She doesn’t like being called mature but she is the most mature emotionally of the group. Taiga has had glimpses where she’s started to realize it before this episode - the summer house scene where she begins talking about how the dog dream might not have been so bad and just generally how she acts and is comfortable and honest around him. Minori is a bit more difficult because she’s not honest with herself… often times she lies or creates a fake persona for her to show to others, we all typically do this to some degree but she is overly cheerful and overly silly because she’s trying to mask an inner sadness and also trying to keep herself from losing focus on her personal goals. The most clear way to tell tho is through Ami. That “Guilt all gone” scene is just… it’s perfect. It’s a call to action by basically telling her she should feel free to move in on him because Taiga likes Kitamura, and it’s also an insult. It tells her she’s stupid to be masking her feelings. Ami can read her like a book and she’s getting so frustrated by Minoris inaction that she’s trying to get her to face it. That and the end of the summer house arc (I’ll touch on it later) we’re pretty good indicators she might be interested in him.
Another thing I wanted to touch on is that The show has always been about how Ryuuji and Taiga find each other. The name of the show, the first 2 episodes, the “Ryuuji is mine” scene, all of these things should kinda make it clear. So if the interest of the show isn’t about who is going to end up with who then what makes this show so good? There’s multiple things, the first one is the calling out of shallow crushes… putting someone up on a pedestal is not going to result in a healthy relationship. Ryuuji is interested in Minori because of how she acts and maybe he thinks she kinda cute. But that’s not enough to foster a healthy relationship, he likes the energy and the atmosphere that she exudes but that’s not really her… hell he doesn’t really KNOW much about her at all. Taiga has to show him that she works multiple part time jobs, that she does those little phone crafts, really the only thing he really knows is that she’s on the baseball team because she’s the teams ace. Another nice aspect and theme of the show is about how societies idea of what love is, The fact that it’s supposed to be some kind of “you’re the one” or “love at first sight” or “soulmate” kinda thing is just bullshit… in the words of one of my favorite comedians, “if I didn’t have you’d I’d probably have someone else”. Love is built up on the trauma is shared experience and while the things that society forces CAN happen, you’re much more likely to find love from people who you’ve been by the whole time. It’s this idea that this sort of familial love is so overlooked. That people will often times take it for granted and not recognize what they already have. This episode is a perfect example of that. Taiga doesn’t even realize the extent of her feelings, she just knows that now that Minori and Ryuuji will be together, she won’t be able to be all buddy buddy with him anymore… and that breaks her. It might not have to be romantic, but of course it is, she loves him and she’s finally coming to realize this. The last thing is the fact that the show should really be considered more like a character drama told in reverse. There’s a lot of layers to these characters and that makes them interesting and they feel so real but most of these things are actually told in reverse. Characters act and have motivations toward the events that happen in the show and you might be confused or just dumbstruck by what occurs or why it happens… you’re somewhat left in the dark and the beauty of the show is piecing together why this character is acting the wya they are before someone just comes out and explains it. Despite the over-the-top-cuz-anime reactions that sometimes get played out for comedic effect these characters feel like they could be real people.
In regards to it not being fair to him, I mean, There is a point where Ryuuji understands the UFO reference in the original episode.. he responds by saying something like “I want to show it to you” which is why I think the fireworks being a galactic clash at the end was nice. It was a nod to him basically to say that she’s looking for the moment and that maybe he can open her eyes to seeing love or his feelings for her. The analogy is not lost on him and he’s able to understand her feelings which is why he was able to understand he was rejected here. Just because he doesn’t have the full context of why doesn’t mean much in the ways of fairness… it’s rare that you would ever know anyones full true intentions in real life, but it doesn’t stop things from happening to you or you being affected by them.

I knew going into this show that Taiga and Ryuuji were going to end up together, but I really wanted Ryuuji X Minarin. This episode killed me, but from Minarin's perspective. I didn't really feel anything for Taiga, but I understood why Minarin made her choice, even though it hurt.

I get wanting to have Minori and Ryuji be explored more, but story wise, I think a minori vs taiga love triangle is a lottttt more interesting than having him fully explore/move on from Minori and then suddenly switch gears to Taiga
(Love triangle can be frustrating though which is def why Ami gets pushed to best girl status in next few episodes)
the thing is Minori and Taiga is really best friend, each one wants their friend to get the guy that they liked.
This is why their relationship is more interesting than usual love triangle where 2 people fight for 1.
Instead we have the 2 people fight to push the person they liked cause they know their best friend is better with this 1 person.
In a way, Minori is the winner, but such a sad state they were, this why for Ami, it's better to fight through and through even with your best friend to get the person you love instead of lying to their own feelings.

i think from the beginning she could guess that something was building up between taiga and ryuuji so she didn't want to interfere but she gave him like confusing signals bc i believe she thought that relationship between taiga and him was like something real but her feelings wouldn't let her just leave them be so she def was lil bitchy about it all. and why would she never like.. let him talk... and talk in a language to confuse him even more. like what she is saying and what she is actually doing are not on the same length.
