  • We start off on this journey in the air! Our vacationers look to be spending this trip at the Contemporary and we get so much great footage from the early days.
They also give us some amazing footage of the old waterski show with Goofy at the helm and Pluto on skis. This film has nearly every attraction at MK and also some great nighttime shots of the Electrical Water Pagaent.
Polynesian fans will absolutely love this one, as we get some amazing front-row footage of the luau. Sit back, relax and enjoy 30mins of Walt Disney World in 1972.

WDW, even in 1972, was a remarkable place.

WDW in the 1970s was truly a very special place, the magic from that era is sadly long gone, it's just not the same anymore.

1972 was an election year. That’s why they had ‘Pooh for President’ in the parade.

From what I heard, the family that managed in the North American rights to the characters was not happy about having them used for anything to do with American politics.

Looks like nobody was too worried about alligators in those days.

They were an endangered species at the time. Almost extinct. Then some idiot decided that we had to save them.

Luau on the beach! The reason why WDW was so special during the 70s and 80s is because it was a true resort with many amazing activities beyond the theme park/s. There was so much life and energy on the lagoon and lake. WDW is still great and our daughter loves it, but it has lost its way.

Luau with a full roasted pig it looked like. And yes, the loss of the small things like the luau and sea raycers is why we don't go for an entire week. We did not like doing the parks all 6 or 7 days of our trip, but liked to break it up. Kids loved sea raycers and mom and dad could have some adult time when they had the kids clubs.

My mother went there in the mid 1970s. She went all the way from Virginia to Florida to get there. But even from the faded picture, she showed me of her with one of the dwarfs, I could tell that they were really trying to do their best to make it a place to be proud of.

LOVE the footage starting at 2:49 of the Contemporary Resort 1st floor convention space, which later became the lobby arcade / Fiesta Food & Fun Center! Then later The Wave: Of American Flavors, and currently Steakhouse 71. First time I have EVER seen online pics or video of this space so early on!

The Fiesta Fun Center was PURE MAGIC in the 80s during our family vacations. Always a treat to see it on video (or what was there first).

I remember the game room in the contemporary from the 70s, it was HUGE, and was honestly thee best arcade in the whole country (and I lived in those back then).

Wow. Amazing the fun stuff people could do at Disney back then. That didn’t require a phone to look up or pay extra to stand in line for a broken 3 hour ride.

So glad the footage included the old Mickey Mouse Review and the old If You Had Wings attractions! Miss them alot..
WDW in the 70s was truly a very special place, sadly todays WDW just doesnt have the same magic..

My first time at Disney World was 1978, so this all looks very familiar. Strange to look back now and only seeing an empty lot where Grand Floridian stands now, and really the entire are between the Poly and GF now almost all filled in with the DVC wings and upcoming DVC Poly tower. And not to mention the DVC Bay Lake tower.

My husband and I were married up on that hill full of palm trees at 25:28. In 2003 when we had our wedding is was called Sunset Point but has sadly been excavated and moved around a bit since the addition of the bungalows.

Great memories, but I keep freeze-framing it every few seconds to scan for a 4-year old me and my grandparents. No luck so far. I remember going in and out of the water at the Poly. People swam, there was waterskiing.... What alligators? LOL. So lucky I wasn't eaten.
For those who don't understand the bar in front of the camera from 12:13 to 12:49, those old 8mm cameras had a viewfinder that was separate from the lens. You could look through the viewfinder and swear you had a clear view, only to play it back later and find out there had been an obstruction in front of the lens the whole time.

When my family went on the 20,000 Leagues ride in 1974 a little one on the ride yelled out when seeing the giant head shown at 9:45 -- that's Lincoln!

What a treasure! One park, 2 resorts, enjoy it all over the course of 4 or 5 days. Wow, what was it like when it was so relaxing?
Did people really eat food under the open track of the Monorail station?
I vote for a return of that character symphony. How amazing to have all those animatronics together. I had the 3 Little Pigs record and I could imagine them singing "I build my house of straw..."!
The Nautilus ride was like our submarine. How sad it was when our sea monster came up for auction not to long ago. I totally remember him. (I'm 53.)
The caliber of the entertainment was phenomenal, back in the days when everyone grew up taking tap lessons. The Dapper Dans still have taps, but they don't do much more than an occasional brush. The can-can and polynesian dancing was wonderful!

2:00 look how open and airy it is without that stupid Fantasia gift shop cluttering it up and clashing horribly with the architecture.

The Fantasia gift shop was there in 1972... but underneath the monorail station (where the Arcade is located now).

@@RetroFett Yes, I know. But have you taken a really good look at it today, and put it in context with the rest of the building? Once you step back and see exactly how ridiculously out of place it is, it will jar your perception every time.
