Much better explanation than I have been getting. Too many instructors think learners can gauge where to put the car on mirrors alone without a reference - that is a nightmare when you're only starting out. Thank you sir!

Thank you, Ashley! This is the best video on reverse bay parking on You Tube. My instructor taught me the "three lines" method but I wanted to to learn this method as it's more useful in real life situations. I watched some videos from different channels before but that just resulted in frustration until I found your tutorial. Thank you for you excellent teaching style, your videos are the best. 👌🏻👌🏻👌🏻

Just a little hint for anyone with a small(ish) car: if the front of the car is roughty in line with the cars next to you or you can see it is in the bay, just park there. Don't park all the way in the back of the space. I've seen drivers get infuriated when they think they spot an empty bay, but there is just a small car in the back. Even once seen a near accident, because the driver wanted to front park in the bay at speed, only to find a smart car in the back of the bay.

Good lesson. In my town, for some reason, the reverse parking is not possible during the test so i never learned that with my instructor. Funny thing is,afther i passed, i tried that manuver based only on my senses in between two parked cars. I was amazed how easy that is when you have a point of referince on the sides. Tried the same thing without cars and i ended up in 2 parking spots 😂😂 practice makes perfect in the end. The lines don't help much if it's night and you can't realy see them.

I believe that for whatever reason you need to steer while reversing you better rotate the car on forward drive to the required direction and reverse straight to it, unless parallel parking cause it's the only way.

Ashley, genuine question after finding this old video on your channel for some research I'm doing...
Why is reversing into a parking bay preferential to, and promoted more, than parking forwards into a bay?
I work at an airport car park where we strongly recommend that customers park forwards into a parking bay. This is due to the increased amount of collisions that occur when people try to reverse into a bay and misjudge (especially the offside) distance of the rear of their vehicle to the one parked beside it.
When we approach customers and ask them to please park in forwards, we're usually met with, "I don't know how to park forwards" or "That isn't what I was taught". I've lost count of the amount of cars I've had to park for people as they themselves just don't have the skills or spacial awareness to park in a standard 5m x 2.4m parking bay.
The other reason "forward parking" is beneficial, is that they are going to be removing and returning luggage (or in the case of a supermarket car park) groceries, into their boot. Obviously, this is made much easier with the boot accessible and less likely to cause damage to surrounding vehicles, as they won't have to drag or carry large heavy bags the whole length of their vehicle. Imagine when bays 580, 582, 558, 559 & 560 (in your video if you're reversing into 581) are all occupied when you get back to your own car with 15 bags of shopping... how will you load them into the boot? You'd have to either pull out into the lane, blocking it so you can load up or drag the bags down the side of the car.
Also, when people do try to forward park, they either attempt it in 1 go and end up sideswiping the rear of the adjacent car with the side of theirs or just spend a lot of time edging back and forth at the wrong angle with little success.
Surely, entering a parking bay forwards gives you much better vision too, as you're naturally looking forwards anyway and can see both the left and right front end of your own vehicle in one view using peripheral vision, rather than switching your view from left to right in your mirrors and over your shoulder.
I'm going to be making my own video on this, similarly with the aerial view, showing my technique of how to easily forward park and would be interested in your thoughts on it.
    Thanks,
    Andy.

  • @MrNeeds

I've been watching a lot of your videos recently Ashley, very helpful, but I do have a few questions that might work for me, I'm a qualified Forklift driver for reach and counter-balance trucks and obviously there's a little crossover with driving road vehicles and industrial vehicles, one way I learned in a forklift to navigate turns is to use "pivot points", this is where the fulcrum area is used to measure the turning circle of the vehicle to assess where your vehicle will end up 100% of the time.
Now obviously it'll vary because the turning circle in a forklift is much more than that of a road going vehicle, but seeing this video, I can't help but think if the same technique could be used here, if you need more information on pivot point use in turning, there's plenty of documentation online regarding it.

      Based on my experience :
      - If the traffic behind is quiet, you can use 90 degree method
      - In a busy traffic, use 45 degree. Many drivers are accustomed to using it. So if you use the 90 degree in this situation which requires you to move forward further, drivers behind may think you just want to continue moving forward, hence they could block your way to reverse.
I have found other advantages in learning the 90 degree method. I had used it for reversing around a corner when I entered a wrong lane in a closed parking area as well as for turning my direction.
So mastering both methods can be useful for you.
