They DELIVERED Live. They are able to pull off all of their complicated and difficult passages with ease. Tull and Zappa had the same standards of musicianship- they had to!
ORANGE Tull played arguably the most difficult music live, with expert precision. The next tightest band was Joe Jackson's. Though the arrangements they played were considerably simpler than Tull's they were also very precise. There is a live Joe Jackson album that was taped in one night with no dubbing, no mistakes.
During this period Tull played with Baroque themes where the harpsichord is a dominant instrument. Combined with English, Irish, and Scottish folk music, it makes for some fantastic and unique "rock" music.
JT was the first live show I took my oldest son together, he was 7 years old, and even not understanding any english, he was astonished with the sound and energy of this gang! He's become a professional musician himself. I never get tired of listening to them. Greetings from Rio!
Davd/Dee Palmer is who started Velvet Green on the keyboards wearing the vest. The amazing John Evan is on the other keyboards wearing the white suit he often did.
The energy of live Tull is matchless, but the sheer engineering polish and orchestration genius of their studio albums is even more impressive to me -- especially this album.

Currently known as Dee Palmer. - Same show, clothes change for a little skit put on between songs. Barriemore Barlow wearing the "fool's hat" dragged out a "baby drum kit" on wheels by a rope acting as if it were a heavy pull for the Velvet Green song.
"Orange" we glad it's Tull Tuesday! Always amazing to experience live Jethro Tull. I actually saw this 1977 Tour at MSG, amazingly skilled live musicianship with a highly entertaining performance. Tull was among my most played music in the 1970s-80's, as they ALWAYS boosted my mood! I guess its easy for people to dismiss Tull as a "novelty band", with their odd combo of Theatrical/Progressive-Rock/Jazz/Medieval Roots/Classical. Sorry for those listeners who don't appreciate Ian Anderson's great writing, and Tull's amazing skills. This Band is one of Life's great pleasures!
@@L33Reacts Hi Lee, Yes, an amazingly original singer and musician too. It took me years to realize how beautiful Ian's acoustic guitar was, as I had mostly focused on his singing and flute playing. And Ian was also one of the greatest theatrical frontmen, awesome to see on stage. As performers, I would only put Ian behind Townshend and Moon, (I guess Hendrix), and maybe Bowie during his "Ziggy Stardust" years.
One of my fave Tull albums, even a smidge more than Heavy Horses for me. Definitely go back and listen to the studio versions. They'll make your face orange.

I was still in high school,so early teenage years, 15 or so. Ran like hell when they opened the doors, to right under the center front of the stage (no seats in those days, you brought a blanket) with Ian Anderson 4' ft or so above me dressed in tartan, like an exotic stork, standing on one leg. I can still see him in my mind, a lifetime later; an unforgettable performer. I would see them years later in Miami, in a chair back in the auditorium a ways. Good show, but...

Lee--- John Glascock became ill (heart issues) and died not long after being diagnosed,sadly. He was a great addition taking over for Jeffrey Hammond. This and he added harmony vocals behind Ian. Not sure they all really sang those choruses for Songs From The Wood--that may heve been a lark and partially pre-recorded. The band never sang backups before that,so if they actually DID have singing ability,this was the first and last time they ever showed that. Great reaction..thanks! T Oh...Orange! LOL
I'd place "Velvet Green" as a mid-Victorian piece - "I'm tight against the seam" is a perfect - and I think original - example of the type of euphemism of that period.

Little side note: this version of SFTW has a quick, but not easily seen, moment where Barlow "plays" the flute, floating over his drums, just as the full band kicks in! Great to see these performances together. Ian Anderson released six "solo" albums between 1983 and 2014. Two of them definitely could have been called "Jethro Tull" albums but for some reason he didn't want to at that time, finally (using almost the same band as then) released two "Jethro Tull" in 2022 and 2023. The two Ian Anderson albums that sound like Tull are Thick As A Brick 2 (2012) and Homo Erraticus (2014). The songs and band are particularly good on Homo Erraticus, and Ian's voice sounds great, after it had deteriorated in the 1980's (and since 2014!). For a sample of Homo Erraticus, a history of the British Isles from 7000 BCE to 2044, listen to the first cut "Doggerland." I saw the TAAB2 tour where the first half was Thick As A Brick in its entirety, and after intermission, all of TAAB2, which includes TAAB referential lyrics and musical parts. It speculates on what “Gerald Bostock” did after he grew up. Try “Old School Song” that might remind you of something from TAAB.
The crazy character is John Evans. He was really funny live. Orange. Sadly this tour was John Glascock’s last before he passed away. He was 27 years old if I remember well. Barlow was a fabulous drummer. I saw Tull in 1979 with UK (Bozzio on drums) as an opening act. An incredible evening for the drums lover that I am.
As we approach the holiday season, keep in mind Jethro Tull has a very good Christmas album, produced in 2003 I believe, I only discovered it last year after a tune from it was played at the Tull concert I attended.
You can’t help but see how their live performances sound like the studio recording. I always have said that it you were blind and at a live concert you would say that they sound just like the studio version

By the way, it would be really interesting to know if you are familiar with a band called "The Windmill". I recently discovered this Norwegian band a few weeks ago, and I must say, they are exceptionally talented. It appears that they have been around since 2001, and it is quite astonishing how they have managed to remain relatively unknown. I had the pleasure of listening to their recent album titled "Tribus", and it is simply magnificent. The album begins with an epic 23-minute track called "The Tree", which is an absolute masterpiece. Their music gives me vibes of so many great bands like Jethro Tull (There is a lot of flute in this album too), Camel, Genesis, and Uriah Heep, all blended together with a touch of neo-prog sound. It is complex, intricate, conceptual, and beautiful music, and the fact that it is played by non-professional musicians in a Norwegian garage makes it all the more impressive. If you haven't had the opportunity to listen to them yet, I highly recommend that you do. I assure you, you will not be disappointed. Thank you again for all of your great reactions!💪🙏
To me this was the high point for Jethro Tull-these songs are absolutely delightful-rich textures, mythic touches, and incredible lush Melodie’s. This their best album and by far the best lineup.
Great set - D Palmer was on left of stage (from audience perspective), playing the 'portative pipe organ' to great effect. (Not sure if you were confusing him with other keyboard player.). It's great to see how versatile they all are - playing different instruments - lover it when Barriemore pops up to play flute.
You need to see this live version of Velvet Green from the London show as it shows Barrie dragging the medieval drum set to accompany the song and there are more shots of him drumming in this song. Btw both Velvet Green and Hunting Girl are Ian’s tales of seduction- VG man ,HG female. The lyrics are clear when examined
I've had the pleasure of seeing Jethro Tull live 8 times over the last 48 years. Saw this lineup, orange hat and all, a couple of time. Their 50th anniversary tour in California was the last show I saw before Covid. Hoping to see them again. Had backstage passes for the tour for the 'A' album and got to hang out with them for a bit after the show! One of my favorites. Happy you enjoy them Lee, I really like your channel!

The energy Ian brings makes him my #1 frontman!! It's fun watching keyboardist John Evan .He's just a goofball and just adds to the total Tull personna of course not to mention his excellent playing. To note they have the 2 keyboardists, with David Palmer who has had a history with the band, with arranging orchestration in their recordings.

Besides the music and the musician ship of the band are incredible. But, one of my favorite parts of Ian’s writing are the lyrics. He’s an amazing wordsmith. A lot of lyrics can be read as poetry. I first saw them when they opened for Led Zeppelin on their first North American tour, and many times after that. My all time favorite rock band.
Fantastic band! Barriemore Barlow was such an incredibly underrated drummer. Although it's not the same band now, I am looking forward to going to see them next Tuesday. Their last album was really good. I think you would enjoy that one!

I've often wondered if I would wear an orange derby. I have a derby that I don't wear but... As you know by now Jethro Tull has a ton of good music. Songs from the Woods is one of my favorite albums of theirs. Roots to Branches is another great album. Stand Up is another with some great tracks "Look Into the Sun", "Back to the Family", "We Used to Know". Down with Tull haters!! :D Cheers.

The keyboardist in these videos is John Evan, not David Palmer. Evan was their original keyboard player.and can always be recognized by his Orange polka-dot tie and white suit.. Palmer had been doing some of the band's grander arrangements and joined the 1978 tour of Heavy Horses. If Palmer is on stage here, he's not been shown.
The woods always had a certain vibe to the English and Celts as it denoted the "sap rising", a euphemism for what Americans called "Rock and Roll". i take Velvet Green to refer to what we British used to call the maidenhead in old folk tales and song. Just my take on it These songs are very English. Orange. looks like Ian Anderson is wearing a Bowler and waistcoat on Hunting Girl maybe used when people hunted?

Roots to Branches from 1993 is the best Tull album after Heavy Horses. It has a beautiful cover with shades of orange.

The whole of Songs From the Wood album is pure gold! The studio version of Velvet Green is sublime, it is a must listen
I love their "Orange" glow . I'm no expert but some of their music is reminiscent of the old folk music of the Northwestern island of England

Fantastic band! Barriemore Barlow was such an incredibly underrated drummer. Although it's not the same band now, I am looking forward to going to see them next Tuesday. Their last album was really good. I think you would enjoy that one!

Lee: THIS was a great 3 song delight. As usual, you're hit by the same sparks that hit us all back in the day. And we get Martin Barre playing tuned percussion, and the great one, Barriemore Barlowe, playing the FLUTE!?!?! Is there nothing these cats can't do impeccably and wreckably? Oh yeah - if I was in a row boat with a girl named Angeline and wanted to, ahem, dispatch her, I'd introduce her head to the oar by saying, "Ange, meet Oar; Oar, Ange." Great reaction.

I've often wondered if I would wear an orange derby. I have a derby that I don't wear but... As you know by now Jethro Tull has a ton of good music. Songs from the Woods is one of my favorite albums of theirs. Roots to Branches is another great album. Stand Up is another with some great tracks "Look Into the Sun", "Back to the Family", "We Used to Know". Down with Tull haters!! :D Cheers.

The keyboardist in these videos is John Evan, not David Palmer. Evan was their original keyboard player.and can always be recognized by his Orange polka-dot tie and white suit..
Palmer had been doing some of the band's grander arrangements and joined the 1978 tour of Heavy Horses. If Palmer is on stage here, he's not been shown.
Palmer was on the left side of stage, opposite John Even, and began the "Velvet Green" segment.
The woods always had a certain vibe to the English and Celts as it denoted the "sap rising", a euphemism for what Americans called "Rock and Roll".
i take Velvet Green to refer to what we British used to call the maidenhead in old folk tales and song. Just my take on it These songs are very English.
