Stormwatch is one of my favorite Tull albums. The music is so different and always so identifiably Tull. Home is a beautiful song, written by a man who often travels far from home. Ian often writes of being homesick ... but never sad, always anticipating his return home.
North Sea Oil ... Such a far sighted observation ... we squandered the oil cash over a decade ... the rich got richer ... the average man worked even harder ! ... across the North Sea in Norway ... they invested the cash in creating a higher standard of living ... kept the money in the bank ! Played this album in the car early 90's ... A master class in audio & social observation.
This band though you appreciate it, hearing the records, Or maybe even seeing the live videos of them. But there is just no way to capture the true Jethro Tull unless you saw them live, in person. If you notice when you talk to someone who saw Tull during their first ten years, you will notice we all say the same thing. That is, that they were the best live band of all time. I've seen every great band there is most of them two or three times. I don't care who you pick. Tull was a monster above them all. You can't just put your finger on what it was. There was just something, a level of perfection ,the volume, the song quality. I can't figure it out, but no one else had it. If you weren't there you're never gonna know. You just can't know what you missed, if you missed it.
One of the best Tull tours I’ve ever experienced . They were in there prime with this Lp. Oh, and it was my favorite tee shirt that I wore out and just now at 65 I bought it again.😊 As the White Sea snaps at the sand.
I love this album. It's completely normal for Tull's music to paint pictures in your mind. Songs from the wood, heavy horses, and this one have put similar images in my mind as well as the reveries from times long gone and a life I never had a chance to live. It's cool you appreciate this music as it was old when I found it. I was born in '79 so........ Anyways, take care man.
Taken as a whole Stormwatch might barely make it into my top 10 Tull albums, but it has one of my favorite Ian Anderson songs--Dun Ringill. Such a perfect gem of a song.
Stormwatch is regarded as the third album in the folksy trilogy.... Songs from the Wood, Heavy Horses, then Stormwatch. It is a heavier album in terms of lyrical content, again (as in Heavy Horses) warning of dwindling "natural resources" and climate change, but also has some mythical moments weaved into the track listing. Another gem from Ian Anderson and co.
This was hardly a warning about "climate change", it wasn't a media thing at the time as the dire warnings of the coming ice age had faded by the late 70s. The song "North Sea Oil" was written in support of the economic boom Britain, and more specifically, Scotland, was experiencing due to the large quantities of black gold discovered in the North Sea. Any environmental concerns revolved around oil spills and leaks. Silly concerns really as crude is 100% biodegradable. In the early 1980s pretty much every waterfront pub in Aberdeen had this song on their play list. Pubs that were filled with men who made good money working on the rigs.
@@RickZackExploreOffroad Crude spills ruin ecosystems, even if most eventually biodegrades. I think North Sea Oli is an observation, rather than support.
@@RickZackExploreOffroad I would hardly say that the lyrics in " Dark Ages" "the big jet rumbles over runway miles that SCAR the patchwork green" and "where slick tycoons and rich buffoons have opened up the seam of golden nights and champagne flights ad-man overkill and in the haze consumer crazed we take the sugar pill." are in support of the oil boom. Ot seems to me he is saying we continue to plunder from the earth and the ad-men sugar coat this so we accept it. But hey lyrics are open to interpretation, that's just my take on it.
Bringing back some "Old Ghosts" listening to this at work on my cassette player back in 1985. This is a great album, I was reminded of "North Sea Oil" about a week ago.
This album is great, and I think it is often thought of as a lesser one of the 'early' Tull albums. However, for me, this is one of my favourites and is usually in my (ever changing) top 5 Tull albums.
Glad your personal situation is getting more sorted! "Stormwatch" ends a really long run of Tull albums I rate very highly (ever since "Benefit" in fact). Next we got "A" (which is my second-least favourite, there's only a couple of songs on there that bear repeating for me), "Broadsword" (which I love again) and then "Under Wraps" (which is my least-favourite, even though Martin rates it for some reason). Ian was also at his most misanthropic when touring that album, I was a bit shocked at the bitter tone to some of his comments when I saw them live. He's always been quite acid at times, but that was a step too far. Anyway, enjoy "Stormwatch" - I do!
Love the video ! So happy for ya that life is "settling" down....I'm gonna reinforce my suggestion that you check out A New Day Yesterday off the Bursting Out Live album ! It's a killer-diller !! Also did you know that Barriemore was the drummer's nickname as many other members had one (I bet you knew that) ? Probably given to'em by Ian...which makes one wonder, did Ian have a nickname ???

If you find the time, I highly recommend listening to some of the bonus tracks from the recently released 50th anniversary version. Specifically "Urban Apocalypse" and "Man of God" are so good I wonder why they weren't included on the album.
Is this the Steven Wilson remix? It addressed the issues in the level of bass between IA and JG. Guess whose bass mix was much higher in the original mix? 😅
@williambaldridge1203 Roots to Branches Broadsword and Crest are good but can't compare to their 70s stuff. I also like .com. Post 70s LPs all have one bad thing in common, Ian's voice has seen better days.
Andreavercesi made a great Cover Version of Orion on his channel, just playing the song on an acoustic steel string guitar. It turned out very good imo.🙂
This is where Tull turned the corner from offering a withering critique of religion to scathing remarks on the newly burgeoning marriage of politics with oligarchs. Crest of the Knave dove head first into the deep end and I think Ian has been a sane compass on how bleeped we've been ever since. God has certainly blessed the ascension of Musk to moving the world's chess pieces in accordance to his whims like a bleeping game of Risk.
