I’m a woman and I would never do that and I always keep my seat belt on unless I have to get up and go to the restroom, I stay in my seat. My husband was on a flight and he had a cup of coffee sitting on the tray table and suddenly the plane dropped a long distance and his coffee cup hit the ceiling. Luckily he had a long sleeve shirt and a sport coat on the only skin exposed was his hands and face. But his experience taught me not to get coffee and don’t let go of the drink and stay in your seat with seat belt on.

I was a flight attendant for many years. My most memorable turbulence experience? Coming into Frankfurt, we were told to take our seats. I was on a jump seat across from another crew member. Our bodies were lifting off the seats even in shoulder harnesses. But the lovely co-worker across from me never looked less than serene-she was knitting! Knitting really fast.
Did the guy hollering "what's going on"?, really expect an answer???? LOL!

@314WIKINGERBANDE-qd9qz it helps screamers themselves, it's a defence mechanism to ease the situation, so the heart can handle the body reaction on the fear. Just think how your body reacts when you scream, and think how high is the heart rate when you just silently scared somewhere...that's coming not so much from the culture or a person's behavioural pattern, as from biology, everyone will scream, whether they want or not that, in unknown situation when the aircraft falls. Only crews members are aware and trained so brain can handle, and rare people who have smooth reactions, which is good and bad from different perspectives. Do not judge people in extreme situations.

@@ceoa Nope. I'd be as silent as a doormouse. Especially knowing I'm in the hands of well trained capable pilots who know what they are doing. Flying is still safer than driving a car. I'm desensitised those kinds of situations.
I was flight attendant for 16 years. There's was one incident of turbulence between Tulsa and OK City that was far and away the worst. Not one person screamed . This was the real deal, not what you see on this overblown video. It was negative panic. People, including myself thought it was the end. It started with what felt and sounded like a midair collision.
Yikes, sounds horrible! The only serious turbulence I've ever been in was between Dallas/FW and SFO. I learned later there had been tornados on the ground. This was around '71. I don't recall any screaming, thank goodness.
@diane9247 I only flew for several years after that experience. I haven't been on an airplane since. I can't imagine a worse way to go knowing the plane is going to crash and it's sayonara. The time it's takes to the end.

@@biff5856 Surprised you flew for a number of years after that incident then suddenly reached the conclusion you wouldn’t fly again. I would think if it were detrimental enough, that incident would have been enough to not fly again. Hundreds of thousands of people fly every day, so the likelihood isn’t very high.
Always use seatbelts.

EXCEPTING when you go to the loo!
I had an experience where I had just received an alcoholic beverage from the beverage cart but luckily I didn't unfasten my seat belt. I suddenly became weightless and pressed up against my restraint. I held on to the cup, but watched my drink leave the cup float in front of my face and immediately I was wearing it! I was wearing my dress uniform as I was reporting to a new command. I had to do drug& alcohol testing as I smelled of alcohol as it soaked my uniform!

I am a former Military Helicopter Pilot. We didn’t have fancy equipment to check for bad weather.
But I saw a bad storm coming when I was at Fort Polk. I landed along with the Cobra flying with me, and that was the craziest 💩 i have ever experienced. It had to be a severe wind shear or a light tornado. Not sure, but I thought for sure we would be flipped on our sides.
The things you remember from your youth when seeing videos like this.
We laughed it off and told a nice story when we got back.

On the flipside you guys are military officers. Trained to and prepared to die in war. Almost conquered the fear of death otherwise you would not be in the military. General public are not prepared for that. More likely to panic compared with military trained personnel who are trained to face death and serious injury in war unlike the general public who are majority who travel on airlines. A lot of commercial Airline pilots worldwide are former retired air force,navy or army officers and pilots from their respective countries. Who become commercial airline pilots after retiring from the military. So they would stay calm and cool in a crisis like unseen sever air turbulence even though civilian passengers experience it would be terrified. I guess their flipsides to being formerly trained in the military. You are more likely to be cool and calm under pressure in crisis. Lets face it there is no bigger crisis than bein in a war and training for it. I feel really sorry for ordinary civilian passengers. It would be really terrifying to go through severe air turbulence. When all you want to do is have nice flight to your destination not wonder if these are your last moments on earth.

No matter WHAT you are doing, and when, it could (for a multitude of reasons), be your last few moments on earth. Even just sleeping in your bed: a tornado could hit you, an odd asteroid could strike your home, an earthquake can take you out - a tree falling on your house, or an intruder with a knife or gun - and dozens of more things. This is all while just sleeping in bed.
Our lives are fragile.

Fun Fact: Some people scream when they are afraid, it’s a natural response.
It is a learned response from being spoiled as a kid. Face reality and deal with it is a much better lesson.

Pilot was under standard, additional training later added.
The pilot overcorrected severely on the rudder inputs and caused most of the instability themselves.
My favorite is the guy yelling….’WHAT IS GOING ON??’ As if someone is going to tell him the truth😮

The aircraft is built to withstand turbulence. The passengers….not so much. Always, and I mean always, keep your seatbelt on. Only unfasten it if you need to go to the lav. Pee quickly, return to your seat and fasten that belt. Snugly, not loosely. It could save your life. A hard head bump on the ceiling can snap your neck or your spine. Also, screaming does not help. If you are in the air and not crashing into the ground or the ocean, you’re probably gonna be ok.

@@user-zj8jc1lg4r You’re welcome. Corporate pilot’s wife of 42 years. I know a thing or two cause I’ve seen a thing or two. Turbulence does not scare me at all. It’s kinda fun actually, as long as everyone is strapped in and enjoying the ride. Have had seats come unbolted from turbulence and bounce around like a Disneyworld ride, but the kids were buckled up and laughing their asses off. But I’ve seen adults not buckled up and one broke his back when he flew up and came down on an armrest. It’s not pretty. I love flying thru thunderstorms, finding that path between clouds and seeing black clouds and lightning .It’s beautiful and terrifying at the same time.
@@ronv6637 I don't do that but I do smile and enjoy it. Unless I'm in the bathroom but I haven't experienced heavy turbulence while taking a whizz. A friend of mine did. It went everywhere...

Surviving bad air turbulence is what cured my fear of flying. If an airplane can do that and not fall apart, I'm convinced it's safe.

I'm 53 years old and have been flying internationally since I was 2, since 1972, before smart phones where everyone wants to film everything...sorry, it's a pet hate. Take it from an experienced flyer. ALWAYS keep your seatbelt fastened. The name of the cognitive bias that makes people not wear their seatbelts is called the "normalcy bias". Its when you disregard the dangers inherent in something because you think the risk is too low for you to suffer any negative consequences from it. There has never been an aeroplane known to crash because of turbulence, but it WILL cause a bumpy ride and you can get injured, or die, like the unlucky 70 year old guy who suffered a heart attack this week during turbulence on a Singapore airline flight to Asia. People are funny. They don't scream while in a boat hitting choppy waters, but they will in a plane hitting choppy air, when it's perfectly normal phenomena in aeroplane travel. Funny that..
Judging by your comment, you probably have a lot more than just one "pet hate". I think it's wonderful that one can film everything nowadays. I have seen thousands of images that I could never see throughout the 20th century (just the other day I saw an image of the beginning of an avalanche filmed at the top of a mountain!) What you call normalcy "bias" does not apply to this case. I started taking air trips before you, for professional reasons, from my hometown São Paulo. I traveled to North America, Africa, Europe, the Middle East and Asia. In all these decades I haven't faced a single case of turbulence (except once, that lasted a few seconds and doesn't deserve the name). I never gave up the pleasure of unfastening my seat belt and relaxing by taking a walk from time to time. Your comparison of choppy waters with choppy air has little meaning. Waters generally ARE choppy, an experience you rarely feel on a flight.

Yeah but you need to unstrap yourself to go to the loo on long flights. What if clear air turbulence hits then? Is it bad luck you get a head injury on a 12 hour flight. You unstrapped for 3 minute break to the loo. In that 3 minutes you got effed up by sever air turbulence. There have to think of securing people going to the loo. Seat belts on the loo seat. Rock climbing harnesses for crew serving drinks and those making their way to the loo everybody else strapped in. Cabin crew members are especially vulnerable they need something to lock them to the floor while walking around. Some kind of rock climbing harness comes to mind. Something for airlines to think about while going forward.

The worst and scariest flight I experienced was flying out of Lagos, Nigeria. It's like we flew straight into a tropical thunderstorm and it lasted for about 45 mins. Oddly, it was so quiet on board as so many people were praying. I really thought that we might not make it! It was so scary.

I did that once, only for the plane to stop after 1 hour flight. I thought it was a 13 hour flight. I couldn’t wake up. 😞
I was on an ANA 777 about an hour from Tokyo, big turbulence, no reactions from anybody.

yup, we had a rollercoaster landing in Cuba and noone made a sound. it was the calmest strong turbulence shaking us violently 🤣 because of everybody else's reactions I wasn't even scared that much 😅 having 2 turn arounds in Japan where we almost touched the ground each time - calm 😂 I don't know what are these zen people I catch on the flights but I'm not complaining

Have you seen some of those videos from the big tsunami? There were several of people (speaking in Japanese of course) that were eerily calm before death. Like, "OK. This it." and "We are done now. Prepare yourself." It just struck me how they didn't go out screaming or praying.
Concerning your comments on #7: Attendants are used to turbulence, which is why you always watch their reactions when things get bumpy. If they're serving, there is generally no reason to be concerned. CAT (Clear Air Turbulence) cannot be picked up by equipment and, therefore, cannot be predicted so they often have no reason to believe that service shouldn't happen as scheduled.
Am used to turbulence and flying. In the fall of 1998, was flying home from New Orleans with a group of friends and were seated towards rear of the plane. The service just started and was right next to me when I heard a large "boom" which came from right side of plane. The "senior" flight attendant came RUNNING with FEAR on her face, up the aisle, hissing at the two flight attendants next to me saying in a panicked/whispered voice, "put away the carts; HURRY; we need to land right away". You could've heard a straw drop it was so quiet. The flight attendant who was in a state of panic remained that way and I stood up and said to her co-worker, "if you don't calm her down, I'm going to because everyone else is looking at her for how they should react!!

I always watch the flight attendants exactly as you say. If they aren't scared, I know I'm okay. They do this everyday.
Got into one like this while flying an Airbus A320 from Bangkok to Chiang Mai. Last twenty minutes of the flight we were descending through storm clouds and it was like a wicked roller coaster ride. People yelling and screaming and praying.
But some of us just stayed quiet and hung on for the ride. I looked out my window at the crazy amount of flexing the wing was doing. Amazing how well built modern jets are.
People have to remember…the most dangerous part of your journey is still the drive to the airport. Flying is pretty safe compared to road travel.
Exactly! I remember this time I was driving to the airport and a taxi rear ended me... At which point I plummeted 5,000 feet to the surface of the Earth and my car was engulfed in flames because of the thousands of gallons of jet fuel I always have in my car.
Not to say your point isn't statistically accurate, but it is an incredibly futile (and, at this point, just plain TIRESOME) thing to "reassure" people with. If it was gonna work, it woulda worked by now.

I crossed Santiago de Chile to Buenos Aires and vice versa, never again. The Andes are no joke, plus I had seen that movie Alive recently and it was terrifying!

Actually, most of the updrafts, downdrafts, and mountain waves are kinda fun. Of course, I suppose being an aerobatic rated pilot has helped me over the years and I really enjoy all of the screamers!!
I guess the difference is like Driving the car and being in the car with someone else driving and not knowing if they are safe/sensible.

Even if not all of this is turbulence, the best advice was given : "keep your seatbelt on, unless you 'really' have to go somewhere".
Turbulences became a popular topic last week for extreme conditions lead to the death of a passenger on SQ321.
He had a heart attack due to the turbulence though.

Ugh, the screamers. Yes, it’s scary. All the people around them are scared too, but they don’t carry on like pork chops. If people must scream, it would be nice if they at least tried smothering the sound with their hands or a jacket or something. It just makes the situation even more distressing for everyone, and is more likely to cause further fear in the cabin which is so dangerous. Panic is contagious and the last thing anyone wants is panicked screaming further further heightening everyone’s level of fear. Trying to stay calm is so important in an emergency, how can people listen for critical announcements of directions from the captain and crew when they’re making so much noise? I know it’s easier said than done, but still they could at least try.
This reminds me of a scene from the king of queens when Doug’s father in law starts freaking out on a flight full of rabbis an the captain announces they’re landing to drop off the screamer😂

The Emirates pilot got it on the ground in that crosswind, but that was a definitive example of overcontrolling the plane after he/she failed to kick out the crab before touchdown.

Agreed. Pilot here, and I was watching the rudder movement through that whole vid. 'Kicking out the crab' btw is done at the last moment before touchdown. During a crosswind landing you want the nose to be pointed into the crosswind on the approach so that the plane itself is tracking down the runway centerline in a somewhat sideways motion - this is called a 'crab.'
The trick is using opposite rudder control to bring the nose around to runway heading simultaneously with main gear touchdown ('kick the crab out) before the nose wheel touches down.
I appeared to me the pilot overkicked, over corrected that miscue, and finally sorted it out before nose wheel touched down.

I should not be watching this as I am TERRIFIED of flying, yet here I am hahaha
I was on a flight that got stuck in clear air turbulence before doplar was on planes. We dropped 10K feet 3 times. I have no video since this was in the 90's. My friend and I were strapped into our seats, as were the cabin crew members. The carry on luggage racks above flew open, and carry-on bags fell out. CRM and ATC worked together, and 30K feet air traffic below us was cleared. We landed safely. It was the only time I've ever screamed on a ✈️ and I've been in flight ✈️s that have been hit by lightning. Lightning did nothing to the planes. I guess they have lightning rods. They must since they're in the clouds. I'm so glad that I wasn't in the loo when we were in turbulence. I'm afraid I'd be covered in toilet water. 🤢

The commonly quoted statistic is that Every commercial jet, on average, gets hit by lightning about once per year. Very seldom does it require any diversion, usually just a ding in the paint job, and a quick inspection after landing. The last time a plane crashed due to lightning (mid-air explosion due to an arc in a fuel tank) was several decades ago, something that has long since been corrected by design. The newer, carbon-fiber composite skinned planes have fine copper mesh incorporated into the skin, as protection.
I flew from Buenos Aires to Santiago, Chile many times as a DC-10-30 pilot and never experienced any significant turbulence at all. Perhaps the best lesson is as stated, keep the seat belt fastened!
When I was around 8 years old my mom and I were flying into O’Hara from NY from Norway and oh my gosh that airport is the WORST for turbulence! That trip it was so bad that seatbelt loosened and slipped off and I smacked my head on the ceiling of the plane. 😂 As far as I recall there were no screamers but there were a couple barf bag users lol.
I travelled so much in my youth. Back in the good old days when a 5 year old could fly alone safely. I was always going places on my own because of family in Denmark and the fact that we showed quarter horses all over the US. And of course family in the US as well. I had SUCH a collection of the little airline wing pins they gave out to us kids! And people were decent and nice back then too. I once left my treasured care bear on a plane and a stewardess found it. They actually delayed the flight so that she could run it back to me. Stewardesses were in air moms back then and were always so friendly, sweet and genuinely happy to see a kid flying alone and spend time with me.
And boy the pilots would also come and talk to me and teach me little things about what they did and how planes worked. I got to see so many cockpits! It was awesome!
It’s a real shame that society has changed so much that none of that is possible anymore. It was just such a fun and interesting childhood. Sucks kids today will never be able to experience that stuff. 😢
In 2011, on our way to the US, we landed in Dubai also in an A380 and i remember watching the monitor linked to the camera below the fuselage, and seeing the runway lines do a zigzag as the plane swung left and right. I enjoyed it, lol

As a flight attendant I have been through wake turbulence from other aircraft where neither one of us were taking off or landing.
You're right: wake turbulence is most severe for aircraft taking off just after a large or giant aircraft has taken off. Delays are built in by ATC to separate flights, to reduce wake turbulence risk.
I think I once experienced it while flying from NYC to upstate. In a small regional jet (I think American Eagle) at around 10,000 ft. Without warning, the plane rolled left what seemed like 70-80 degrees, then the pilot corrected level just as quickly. All in just a couple of seconds. I surmised we'd hit a roller vortex off the wingtip of a bigger plane.

A work colleague was coming over the Swiss 🇨🇭 alps and the air hostess pressed the wrong button and the message went out to everyone to get ready for a crash landing and totally panicked and threw his dinner behind him and when staff apologised he looked behind to see who had his dinner over them and said that this guy was massive and not very happy 😃

It's not turbulent until you hear Flight Attendants belted into their jump seats crying, sobbing, and hearing a very nervous voice chanting ''Trust the plane. Trust the plane. Remember what they said. Trust the plane'' . A heavily loaded 747 in 1984 from SFO to Honolulu at night that I was sure was going to break up. I flew on hundreds of flights for my job and this was one of the worst turbulence experiences I ever had. Then again, there was the Quantas 747 with hundreds of vacant seats going from Bahrain to Frankfurt. A mechanical delay allowed them to bring on more booze carts. Halfway across the Mediterranean Sea at night in 1979 in a violent storm, the Aussies started barfing booze puke. The stench filled the cabin and I urped a few times as well. I watched the wings flap maybe 20+ feet at the tips during the lightning flashes and the #1 and #2 engines were gyrating menacingly like they were going to break off. Time to die.
Earlier in the year, on May 25, 1979, I changed my mind and didn't fly Albany to O'Hare to LAX to see my parents. AA191 crashed shortly after takeoff after the #1 engine broke off and 273 people were killed. I changed my plans while awaiting the cab to the airport and lived another 45 years. But I was sure that Quantas flight would be my last. It was just before they took over the Embassy in Tehran in November. I refuse to fly any more. Time to enjoy home.
As a retired pilot, I can tell you that thermal turbulence has absolutely nothing to do with the jet stream. See those big white puffy clouds? That is thermal activity.

I disagree with it being the worst turbulence you’ll ever see too. I’ve been through some REAL rough shit that lasted way longer than that. Hell I’ve been in the last plane to be able to land in a massive snow storm. And for me, the scariest turbulence was always on overnight international flights. When you’re sleeping and you wake up because of a sudden drop while you’re over the ocean? That’s real shit right there. That’s when you hear a bunch of people start praying and you grip your armrests for dear life!😅

Yeah sometimes, not often, but sometimes the turbulence is so bad you get the thought for 1 second of "what if?" but then you remember your're in a airplane and the likelihood of something tragic happening is so low like I was at a far far far greater risk of harm getting to the airport
I'll say to anyone who's afraid of flying or hates any kind of turbulence that most turbulence is during takeoffs and landing and there's a few types. In Summer you get a lot of heat convection turbulence from the ground. Then there's the more common wind turbulence, and mountain turbulence. Turbulence over mountains can be the worst and 2nd worst being the kind caused by heat, but the most common being wind I will just say planes can fly as fast as 600mph and the wind will not knock an aircraft that can easily withstand those speeds out of the air. As for the other 2 just remember there's a reason it's big news whenever something significant happens on a commercial aircraft. It's not common at all

I would go as far as to say that 80-90% of phone camera videos on RUclips in the early 2010s were shot in portrait mode. When scary, potentially dangerous situations are happening, people tend not to really care about the orientation of their phone. I also think it’s weird anyone would expect a scared, panicking person to correctly orientate their phone for the enjoyment of the internet. This is definitely a quarterbacking/hindsight sort of complaint.

Been there done that. The worst part is - time seems to slow down and you have zero control. Your senses are at their best so you are highly aware of every single thing going on - seconds are like minutes/hours. It is a very mind bending, horrible experience especially the persistent thought of knowing you are going to die.
Im a regular flier. Once, i had a 1 hour flight on a pretty bad weather.
While in air, the pilot warned for turbulence so we all fastened our seatbelts. And when i tell you i was PRAYING i was. It was that bad. Everyone went dead silent.. and it felt like the plane was steep diving to the ground.
I used to work airline industry. Traveling allot. For my worst experience was when we head to Indonesia had air pocket 10secnd free fall. Was a nightmare

Once upon a time, while flying from NY to Argentina we hit some bad weather. Like, REALLY bad. I was holding onto my seat for dear life - doing my best to stay cool. There was a former Navy pilot sitting beside me, completely unaffected by the turbulence but clearly annoyed with all the screaming. He looked at me, rolled his eyes and said, “Son you really think holding onto your seat is gonna keep this plane in the air?” I looked at him and we both started laughing.
