I'll speak under correction by my fellow more-knowledgeable posters, but I believe that a "bright cap" is a capacitor on the Volume I channel that filters out some low end of the incoming guitar signal. On a real amp it has the effect of causing more noticeable distortion at lower volumes, but the volume control (on the amp, not the guitar) has the characteristic of "popping on," i.e., the sound will be very faint at first as Volume I is turned up and then suddenly *_BANG!!!_* it's loud. Without the bright cap, the Volume I rolls on more smoothly and evenly, but the saturation is not as available until later in the potentiometer's sweep (at more volume).
You are basically correct about bright caps. Different values of capacitors affect the volume pot's gain and volume differently. Marshall (and many other manufacturer's) have used various cap values. The larger caps have a more immediate effect as you turn the volume pot up. All the cap does is let high frequencies bypass the volume pot so you get more overdrive earlier in the volume sweep. The larger the cap value, the wider the frequency band width. Large caps basically pass almost the entire signal. Smaller caps pass just higher frequencies. Bright caps have no effect when turning the volume pot all the way up. Hope this helps someone out there. :)
If I am not mistaken, this pedal should be able to do a pretty good emulation of the amplifier that Lemmy Kilmster of Motorhead used primarily. Any chance you guys could pass one of these over to your bass review team so we can see if it would be a good option for us four stringers who don't have the room, funds or noise suppression gear for a vintage 100w Marshall stack?
thanks, Mark for your reply. Yes I'm in the process of checking this out. If there will not be a dedicated UA Dumble-Amp+Cab-Sim-Pedal in the near future this will be the way to go. May I ask if you have experience with that ? @@markntexas8265
Ghost notes are well known amongst drummers creating a fair amount of dynamics on a snare drum. As a drummer watching guitar videos I can confirm this😄
I guessed completely wrong on which was which in the intro, though I'm sure different mic placement on the physical amp could add the room I was hearing in the petal. Anyway, I love UA, I use a lot of their stuff, and they've been doing some incredible stuff lately. and I agree with Pete's sentiment in the beginning, I prefer the sound of the pedal over the amp. Love it, great stuff.
Bought it. Fantastic. Sounds 100% real. For fun, I dimed all the knobs EVH style. It sounded just like VH 1. And when you hear the LION in the mix with other LION tracks you'll be stunned at the separation of the gtrs. Go buy it. The Ruby is also fantastic.
One of the best Reviews/Clips 👍👍👍 I really enjoyed it 😅 Sorry for not (not yet) knowing your names (i´ll get them quickly 😉✌) In the evening, the Man on the Guitar must have had sore muscles from his permanent grin.... while playing the UAFX Lion 😂🤣 Also enjoyed the Clip with the Boss IR-2..... really true words.... it doesn´t matter, what Model it should be (this is a Sim of a ´63 Bassman.... and this a Sim of a SLO-100, and this.... AC30, Plexi, Boogie, tralala 😜 ), it just has to sound and feel good 👍🤘😎 Big and many Thanx for your Work and Clips 👍 Best Regards from "the Pott" (Essen/Ruhrgebiet/Germany)
74 Super Lead 100w owner here. About the video's first part - the pedal destroyed the little amp. DESTROYED. Before the reveal I was like "PLEASE let that first sound be the pedal it sounds so good!". And it was. I was EXCITED about the first sound, and really uninterested in the 2nd. I wonder what the differences between them would have been like if using the same IR. Either way, this pedal sounds wicked. Retubing a vintage 100w is neither cheap, time efficient nor fun. And the amp always sounds different afterwards! Tempting. Although aside from using the pedal's analog I/O I don't think there is a way to reamp with it. Too bad! Maybe I have that point wrong idk.
To defend UA's decision to have all different pedals; people identify a lot with the amps and brands they choose. They'll describe themselves as a "fender guy" or "vox guy" etc. So by making different, very recognizable versions they really are catering to the guy who has been playing marshalls since the 80s.
@@brrblack497 Wangs is more than likely Marshall ckt. fuchs is Dumble-ish, Fender version of UAFX pedal covers that. Koch, well I don't have any experience with their amps in person.
Eddie used the JBL120 speakers with greenbacks to get that high mid sound on Van Halen 1. On the Van Halen 2, he only used the greenbacks hence the change in sound.
There’s a certain texture in how all the chord notes sound/mesh together with the real amp that once I heard it said “if this is the pedal then they’ve done it” but alas it was the amp of course. Not knocking the Lion. It’s amazing and so practical. In certain scenarios it will be the better choice. This should not be a tubes vs modelers discussion, these are all tools to enable the more important thing: music making. Choose yours and go forth!
I recently picked up the OX cab stomp box and it absolutely blows away my other IR loaders (boss TAE, captor X and fractal FM3 dyna-cabs). I was on the fence with this pedal but that last bit at the very end with the clean tone did me in 😅 Seriously, being able to toggle between that and a cranked high gain lead AND have a boost toggle switch is such a simple but complete setup as I can get reverb and delay from the OC stomp, send a DI signal from the stomp to a Duncan power stage and can behind me and a cab sim signal to the house.
Holy shit. I watched the beginning twice and said the first one was definently the amp because it sounded thicker and had a woof sound to it like a marshall does. I was wrong.
I'm with Pete! I prefer the sound of the pedal. Awesome! At 10:00 it actually sounds like an old Marshall about to blow up. Can you defeat/bypass the internal cabs?
I've got UA's Dream 65 and I love it - it's perfect for what I do. I have to admit I guessed these completely the wrong way 'round - I thought the second sound each time must be the pedal because it was so much brighter through headphones. So, ironically, what I thought was a classic Marshall tone was actually the Roarsome! As I've come to expect from UA, It sounds amazing 😎, but I'd have liked to have heard the amp with some of the brightness rolled off for closer match.
@@beaucroftrecordersAh. Well since originally replying I’ve had the chance to gig quite a bit with the lion, the IRX and the IRD. I really liked the IRD more than the IRX. I use the lion with the ox stomp and honestly think both the lion and IRD sound a lot better through the OX stomp vs their built in speaker/cabs
@@FastRedPonyCar That's interesting. I'm sure the main reason I find the UAFX pedals so good for live work is that their power amp and cab sims really get to the heart of the "amp response/feedback" that IR's just don't capture. It's a shame that the IRX/D need a OX Stomp to get you to your happy place 🙂Are you sure the Lion on its own can't get you that sound? I'm happy with the cab sims in my Dream and Ruby and don't see the need for an Ox Stomp. I'm still trying to get someone to persuade me to get an OX Stomp! I love Dave Friedmans' amps, especially the Smallbox, but my current bands don't need a Marshall type core sound. The Dream is a great universal platform for added drive pedals and the Ruby gives me my dose of Vox, or in my case Morgan AC40, when I can't use my amp.
@@beaucroftrecorders Yeah I typically dial in a brighter sound on stage than what the lion on it's own can produce and that's mainly from the aspect of it cutting through better. Some of this can be done with the EQ on the mixer but that extra top end bite just sounds a bit more natural coming from the OX Stomp.
A great alternative to the UAFX Lion, which I bought a few days ago and which costs only half the price of the Lion, is the "Rodenberg BL800 Gold", hand-built in Germany, which sounds fantastic to my ears and comes very close to a JCM 800! Musical greetings from Germany Mic 🙂
That last thing you touched on is key for me. Everybody seems to balk at the prices of these because you'd spend so much to have all of them but I don't think that's the goal. I think you pick your favorite amp, buy that pedal and a few effects to add to the chain, and rock it as if you've just bought an amp. You're getting something like a "golden sample" Fender '65 Deluxe Reverb with all common mods applied (and toggleable) for $400. These things seem insane. I absolutely understand wishing one of these pedals had all of the amps, but do you think they'd release that at the same price?
I'd probably buy one of these if they put out one that you could update the firmware to replace the amp or something. Like those toneprint pedals. They all have the same button layout afaik
@Andertons Music Co Tomorrow can you do this test with the UA Lion into like a 50 watt and 100 watt Marshalls And maybe a Laney and a Magnatone INSTEAD of straight into the board?! Pretty Please?
I use the Dream 65 with the Twin setting with JBL cabs into the effects loop of a solid state Blues Cube. I'm chasing Jerry Garcia tones. Love the pedal, not a fan of UA or the Bluetooth.
The reason it sounds so good is that they didn't capture a sound, they didn't do computer sound wave manipulation, the way it works is by mimicking the voltage outputs of the original Marshalls, the 68 Super Lead, and The Bassman, EVHs "Brown" sound, and there are more cabs available on the app, they were meticulous in the analysis of the real amps. It's stunning.
You tested the bright cap on the bass amp wich haven’t got one. It doesn’t work there. I think the Brown sound is intended to go with 4x12 with the mix of Greenbacks and JBL speakers like Eddie used on the first Van Halen album.
The difference is... Newer generations arnuaedbto hearing things digitally. If your an old head like me that toured for 10 years with w JCM 800 half stacks this won't hit. For, pretty much anyone else... This will nail it. For the record.... I'm buying one
Do a video about Lee's desk. He talks about it all the time. Is it brown? The box of this pedal looks to be CNC milled from a solid piece of aluminum. Looks beautiful.
Holy guacamole. My ears are usually pretty reliable on these, but I actually was convinced they were the opposite of what they were in that intro. The amp sounds a little flabby and wishy-washy, but the pedal has a bright, alive sounding quality I'd immediately associate with Marshall. That's an outstanding job they've done. I often struggle with the pedals trying to be amps, thing in general. But, this thing is killer!!!!
Tbh I 100% want really cool dedicated amp pedals to collect - it’s a luxury thing - but I want PERFECT amp clones, that I can collect and put in a small display case. It’s a niche luxury want, but there is a market for collectors. What are you guys hearing in the room for “sound”? If the amp goes into the OX, to board, and Lion to board, what are you guys listening to live in the room? The Studio speakers from the board? Or do they both come through a cab? Would love to know how this is routed- thanks
I thought the 2nd was 28:53 the pedal...it sounds fuller and more gain, I prefer the amp from where I am listening. The brown sound here sounds really buzzy and harsh.

I hope UA will continue their line with a Dumble+Cab Simulation Pedal ;)
The dream has a version even the ported speaker cab
thanks, Mark for your reply. Yes I'm in the process of checking this out. If there will not be a dedicated UA Dumble-Amp+Cab-Sim-Pedal in the near future this will be the way to go. May I ask if you have experience with that ? @@markntexas8265

@@TheShaggyD.A. oh yesss - good one !!
And today (24th Sept 2024) they have !
Great demo, Wow I'll need to buy the Lion, it'll help by removing most of my gain pedals from my board.
Ghost notes are well known amongst drummers creating a fair amount of dynamics on a snare drum. As a drummer watching guitar videos I can confirm this😄
That sounds glorious 😍 like pete thorn said instant Van Halen 1
Love this pedal. All the sound guys where ive gigged wanted to know about it.
Yeah, I actually thought the pedal sounded a lot better, but then, what do I know?
Bought it. Fantastic. Sounds 100% real. For fun, I dimed all the knobs EVH style. It sounded just like VH 1. And when you hear the LION in the mix with other LION tracks you'll be stunned at the separation of the gtrs. Go buy it. The Ruby is also fantastic.
I dont care what anyone says that pedal sounds phenomenal.
One of the best Reviews/Clips 👍👍👍
I really enjoyed it 😅
Sorry for not (not yet) knowing your names (i´ll get them quickly 😉✌)
In the evening, the Man on the Guitar must have had sore muscles from his permanent grin.... while playing the UAFX Lion 😂🤣
Also enjoyed the Clip with the Boss IR-2..... really true words.... it doesn´t matter, what Model it should be (this is a Sim of a ´63 Bassman.... and this a Sim of a SLO-100, and this.... AC30, Plexi, Boogie, tralala 😜 ), it just has to sound and feel good 👍🤘😎
Big and many Thanx for your Work and Clips 👍
Best Regards from "the Pott" (Essen/Ruhrgebiet/Germany)
That sounds INCREDIBLE. I would like to win that pedal in a giveaway !!!!. Hello Capt Lee and Danish Pete!
😂🤚 got it completely wrong, I thought 1 was the amp. I definitely prefer the pedal tone to the amp you used, sounds great
What a great idea comparing it to an actual Marshall.. Please try showing how it reacts to pedals :)
What if your a Wangs, Fuchs or Koch guy, lol.
@@brrblack497😂
@@brrblack497that was kochy! 😉
Suck it, Koch guy 😛
@@brrblack497 Wangs is more than likely Marshall ckt. fuchs is Dumble-ish, Fender version of UAFX pedal covers that. Koch, well I don't have any experience with their amps in person.
Eddie used the JBL120 speakers with greenbacks to get that high mid sound on Van Halen 1. On the Van Halen 2, he only used the greenbacks hence the change in sound.
I'm actually one (of a few?) that thinks VHII has a more natural sounding Marshall guitar tone, but hey - that's my opinon... 🤘
@CherryBerries2009 Well, it is more natural sounding because he used just the amps and cabinets. On VH1 and from W&CF, he used the load box method.
@@ivorharden I knew it but now I know it! Less distorted on VHII... Thanks!
I have the recently plugin version of this and it is truly excellent.
NUX plexi crunch is pretty good.
My back loves this
I have the Dream 65’ but I guessed wrong. These pedals are getting ridiculous 😅 ( Edit: It’s borderline criminal you get such a good sound so easy) 😂😳
Wicked playing by Pete , made the pedal look even better
That's my Christmas present sorted.
You want Danish Pete all wrapped up in festive wrapping paper ?
@digitalchris6681 perish the thought 🤣
@ Ah, so you're a Lee groupie !
@@digitalchris6681 No. Are you a digital Jon fanboy?
@@davidturner7863 I fancy the studio carpet more.
I recently picked up the OX cab stomp box and it absolutely blows away my other IR loaders (boss TAE, captor X and fractal FM3 dyna-cabs).
I was on the fence with this pedal but that last bit at the very end with the clean tone did me in 😅
Seriously, being able to toggle between that and a cranked high gain lead AND have a boost toggle switch is such a simple but complete setup as I can get reverb and delay from the OC stomp, send a DI signal from the stomp to a Duncan power stage and can behind me and a cab sim signal to the house.
Holy shit. I watched the beginning twice and said the first one was definently the amp because it sounded thicker and had a woof sound to it like a marshall does. I was wrong.
What are you guys hearing in the room? The resultant sound through some Full Range Monitors connected to the PC?
I actually liked the 1st clip. 😮
I also like Lee's Rolex Submariner in the pedal shots. Nice taste in watches mate.
awesome!!!! sounds great!
I'm with Pete! I prefer the sound of the pedal. Awesome! At 10:00 it actually sounds like an old Marshall about to blow up.
Can you defeat/bypass the internal cabs?
Yes
I actually preferred the amp but I also like the Lion.
Same…the difference wasn’t as big as I thought it would be but the actual amp was definitely more full sounding and harmonically rich.
With DREAM 65 i sold Axe FX) Super pedal for my pedalboard when need to play in PA)
Amp into OX Box sounds best ❤
When Pete rolls the volume back on the Tele....☺
I got this thing and it honestly sounds great
I've got UA's Dream 65 and I love it - it's perfect for what I do.
I have to give it to James Santiago he really nailed it something special here!
You know everyone wants to hear a comparison with the Friedman IR-X. Let's do it!
John Nathan Cordy did this. They both sound great.
@@FastRedPonyCar He didn't because he used IRs for the Lion and that removes a key component from the Lion.
Sounds great with the Tele: but too much raspy gain with the LP but I guess this is easily adjustable with a bit of tweaking
A great alternative to the UAFX Lion, which I bought a few days ago and which costs only half the price of the Lion, is the "Rodenberg BL800 Gold", hand-built in Germany, which sounds fantastic to my ears and comes very close to a JCM 800!
Musical greetings from Germany
Mic 🙂
I’m a die hard vintage guy. I usually play 1965 AC-30 with a strat from the same year. I bought the dream, it’s that good it’s not even funny
@Andertons Music Co Tomorrow can you do this test with the UA Lion into like a 50 watt and 100 watt Marshalls And maybe a Laney and a Magnatone
INSTEAD of straight into the board?! Pretty Please?
Straight into the fender ifr or a katana artist pre-amp would be awesome too
I use the Dream 65 with the Twin setting with JBL cabs into the effects loop of a solid state Blues Cube.
Can’t wait for the ampeg b15 next!
Sounds good !
Wow more petals
The Brown sound should be combined with the GB/JBL cab 😊
I would love to see how this pedal works with an amp like a Marshall DSL. Could it give it a more vintage sound or different qualities?
The difference is... Newer generations arnuaedbto hearing things digitally. If your an old head like me that toured for 10 years with w JCM 800 half stacks this won't hit. For, pretty much anyone else... This will nail it. For the record.... I'm buying one
The Quilter Superblock UK does the Marshall sound with real tube/valve into any amp.
Great job 👏
So, you’re plugged into the desk? When I go to a rehearsal room or a gig what power amp do I bring?
Any FRFR wedge or monitor would do. Headrush, line6, mission, etc
Might just as well bring a proper valve Amp then. @@greenrivergear
Do a video about Lee's desk. He talks about it all the time. Is it brown?
The box of this pedal looks to be CNC milled from a solid piece of aluminum. Looks beautiful.
Which one sounds better? Yes. Also, love my Softtube Marshall emulation on the UAD Apollo.
The higher frequencies are always the challenge for digital emulations and so they are here.
I agree with Pete. The pedal sounded wide open and the amp sounded compressed.
Tbh I 100% want really cool dedicated amp pedals to collect - it’s a luxury thing - but I want PERFECT amp clones, that I can collect and put in a small display case.
It’s a niche luxury want, but there is a market for collectors. As long ad we recognise that collecting gear is as much of a hobby as playing guitar - AND THAT’S OKAY
if you want near perfect amp tones you can get them for free downloaded off the internet these days, so it’s best to make something affordable, physical and useful my grubby hands can grab and twist
What are you guys hearing in the room for “sound”? If the amp goes into the OX, to board, and Lion to board, what are you guys listening to live in the room? The Studio speakers from the board? Or do they both come through a cab? Would love to know how this is routed- thanks
Listening to both through the Genelec 8040 speakers
@@andertonsThanks!!! Keep up the great vids!
@@andertonsBet that sounds pretty sweet.. I got the Dream and sounds sick with tiny Tascam active speakers
Would like to see a UA version of the Roland JC120 😊
The amp sounds so much better than the pedal. No contest.
I'm surprised you guys didn't think to switch to the JBL/Greenback speaker mode with a bit of EP boost for the Brown Sound.
If your song sucks it doesn’t matter which you use. 🎉
Pedal sounds better than the actual amp!
Seems The Edge used all these pedals at The Sphere in Vegas pretty recently, in stead of his amp collection. I think that says it all.
I thought the 2nd was 28:53 the pedal...it sounds fuller and more gain, I prefer the amp from where I am listening. The brown sound here sounds really buzzy and harsh.
Great pedal. Wish it had a headphone Jack but still has great sound
WHYYY .... UAFX doesnt put a headphone connection on this pedals ..... PLEASEEEEE .... these amps-in-a-box need a headphones connection for Home practicing ... PLEEEASSSEEEE ....
