  • Dr. M.A.M. Ramaswamy the Baron of Indian Racing had led in an Indian Derby winner back in 1989 as the joint owner of wonder horse Exhilaration. But the winner had not carried his famous Gold with the brown belt colours. Ultimately it was AMAZING BAY (originally named Prism) who came out and gave Dr. Ramaswamy his first taste of The McDowell lndian Derby flavour when she carried his colours to victory, ridden superbly by jockey Satish Narredu.
It was a big field of 16 that lined up to face the Starter with Amazing Bay the favourite. In fact, The Baron had as many as five amongst them sporting his colours and in the end when jockey Satish Narredu conjured up an electrifying run from the filly along the inside rails, Dr. Ramaswamy for a brief fraction thought that the winner was sporting the colours of Mr. Deepak Khaitan (gold With a red belt). For one heart stopping moment he thought he had been denied, before realising that Amazing Bay had indeed given him his greatest victory yet.
Bred at The Poonawalla Stud, Amazing Bay was a daughter of the great Riyahi out of a classic winning mare named Birthday Girl which used to race in the same colours that her daughter sported that first Sunday in February) Dr. Ramaswamy did not acquire her as a youngster from the farm where she was bred. He bought her off Mr. Deepak Khaitan after her Juvenile campaign. The rest is history. Amazing Bay had a length to spare to Cape Knight sporting the Mallya ridden horse by- Pesi Shroff and sporting the Vijay Mallya colours which had once again placed bridesmaid.
