- The Merry Men of Ridley Scott's Robin Hood discuss their on and off the screen friendship and play a few songs on the lute, including a new HitFix jingle requested by Drew McWeeny.

Little bit of trivia: Alan Doyle wouldn't respond to his original character name, so they had to switch it to Allen A'Dayle so they would get his attention during filming.
Also, it's Doyle's first "big role". He was originally the lead singer of Great Big Sea (A Canadian Folk band from Newfoundland) and that's how he met Crowe and the other boys. Crowe actually got Doyle onto the set after the band broke up, and helped Doyle kick off his acting career. Since then, Doyle and the boys above (Duran and Grimes) can be seen in a few episodes of the Canadian television show Republic of Doyle together, and Crowe has helped Doyle with his solo career as a singer.

Thanks for posting that information. It is interesting how these actors connected. I had no idea who Alan Doyle is. It was obvious from this interview that he was more than an actor. He is very talented…and funny. Now I want to watch the movie again just to see these guys interact on screen together. I had just watched one of my favorite scenes where Russel Crowe introduces his merry men to Cate Blanchett. It’s the one where the three women they had had an “historic evening” with came out of the hut.
The chemistry between all the actors in this movie is what made it one of my favorites.
What was his original character? As Allan a’dale is an actual character in the tales of Robin Hood

When I first heard that Alan was going to be in the movie, I thought "Wouldn't it be funny if he were cast as Alan a Dale?"

Wow! None of them are actually British! Had no idea. Well, they did a great job of making us believe.
Well one is welsh and the other 2 are Scottish robins the only English one except from northern England in the movie so if you confuse Scott’s welsh or Irish for English boys

Would love to hear you guys do Asoalin In the Peter Paul and Mary style. If you have a listen of them playing it, the guitars sound a lot like lute.
Sarah, Great Big Sea is not there. Alan is the front man for GBS, but the rest of the band was not in this video. Alan produced an album for Russell and played with him. Alan came to Russell's mind for this role and he auditioned.
James Bond theme played on this instrument would be kinky fantastic :)

My favorite part was when they mentioned how well Alan fit the role because they were friends. They didn't however mention HE HAS THE SAME DAMN NAME!
