  • Thanks for joining me today. We will continue our study of Mark's Gospel. Our last study brought the first section of this Gospel to a close. Mark's Gospel outlines a clear progression of Christ's ministry from baptism to the cross. Chapters 1 - 3 lay out Christ's authority to preach and heal, His wide acceptance and growing popularity amongst tax collectors and sinners (pun intended), and the mounting opposition by religious and political leaders. The following section from chapter 3:7 - 6:6a showcases the authority of the Messiah; however, per the commentary outline, the focus is the disciple-family of the Messiah and those outside.
This section is flanked by the disciples growing closer and closer to Christ while those who, all things considered, would've been expected to be close to the Messiah increasingly reject Him and His teaching. Christ was rejected by the religious leaders, His family, and the people of His hometown. Knowing this makes Christ's warning to His followers to "count the cost" all the more critical. No matter how much people attempt to separate their hate for the followers of Christ from the person of Christ, the fact remains that Christ warns His followers that the hatred directed at His followers is due to the truth of His word. It is not about us; however, we are in the best company. The attacks on religious liberty that will continue to mount are due to the desire of people to live out the desires of their hearts. Even if most believers say nothing, the light found in the few who will speak or stand for truth will be attacked. If the Bible were not the truth, no one would waste time attacking it or the followers of it; however, the truth is too salty to ignore. It's as if you've received a plate of food that has been severely oversalted; even if you desire it, you can't ignore the pungent taste of the salt. That is why people can't just ignore the Bible or the followers of it; they must try hard to silence those who share it.
Today, our focus is verses 13 - 19 of chapter 3.
