I bought a "blemished" guitar without a blemish. The Yamaha Revstar RSE20

  • Here's my thoughts after 24 hours of setting up and playing the Yamaha Revstar RSE20 - I bought what I thought was a blemished guitar but after careful inspection, the only thing that was wrong with it was the set-up. It was a customer return and I'm assuming someone made some adjustments without knowing what they were doing and after making it unplayable, returned it to the dealer. It was a pretty easy fix and I'm very happy with the result.

    I just received a new RSE20. For $500 it's a steal. The workmanship is quite good & it plays really well. I love the way the chambered body resonates. Thanks for the video.

      I’m really happy with mine. Considering buying one of the higher level models just for comparison.

    Hi there. I bought one of the earlier models, the Black with gold flecks RS420. Aside from a set up, all I've done is sand the gloss off the neck. It plays and sounds great, really comfortable on the strap. Took a while to get used to the neck, but now I love it. A real quality feel to the construction. Probably a tad brighter than other twin humbucker mahogany guitars out there, and certainly lighter. They have sure put some thought into this design, and I love the fact that it is an original shape. Very happy with mine.😊

      Absolutely love the fact that it doesn’t really look like anything else. It’s not trying to be anything other than what it is!

    I have the Standard with P90, made in Indonesia too, same color. The factory setup was very good on mine.
    Great finish, very easy to play, great sounds (10 very distinct sounds).
    I love this guitar, as much as I love my Gibson SG that costs twice and LP Classic that costs 3 times the price of this Revstar RSS02T.

      Yeah I am very impressed with mine. Since it was a customer return, I can’t really blame the factory for the bad set up. I’m guessing the bad adjustments were probably made by the original purchaser who apparently didn’t know what they were doing.

      @@olddogguitars23 On the other hand, I almost returned the Revstar the same day I received it. The sound was lifeless, the guitar had no soul. By chance I replaced the original Elixir strings with David Gimour GHS Boomer in 10.5 - 52 (the ones he uses on his P90 Les Paul) and the miracle happened, the guitar started to sing !

      @@jeanm.8344 - That doesn't make sense. I've never heard of strings making that much of a difference. Especially when you're getting rid of a HIGH quality string like Elixirs

    Yeah I just got one in yellow shipped for 400 mint condition. I'm blown away. Not my choice of color but I'm going to black out all the hardware / pickguard (plus will install a Duesenberg trem). In my case the setup was beyond anything I've played in my 30+ years of playing. I didn't think action could get that low without consequence but no buzzing even on bends I can't believe how buttery smooth fast runs are. My only gripe is the 3 way switch. The 5 way on the standard/pro models gives a nice quack in the in between positions and I love that. I'm not entirely sure how to wire this myself for that type of thing having only dealt with strat re-wiring and I can't find much online for these Yamahas

    • @olddogguitars23
      @olddogguitars23  5 месяцев назад +1

      Yeah I think it's a pretty standard PCB switch that would be replaced with a nicer Switchcraft or something similar. I've been trying to figure out the push/pull tone switch because I't obviously NOT a coil split but seems to give a similar tone.
      I'm sure the yellow is a great looking guitar!

    • @ikigai47
      @ikigai47 5 месяцев назад

      @@olddogguitars23 Yeah I'm a bit surprised I can find nothing online to help me wire this properly. If you search in RUclips 'revstar mod' there are a few vids but they're focused on the 5 way switch models. One is pretty interesting called "Fixing the flaws." That guy is very picky, and very smart. Yeah the yellow's okay to my taste, just not beautiful. I always like yellow and black though so making everything but the body black I think it will suit my taste more

    I have experienced a lot of realy bad setups from Indonesia. My RSE20 made no exeption, the setup was terrible.
    The bridge sky high and the neck dead straight, tension a lot of tension. Well that tension are to go somewhere and as these necks are not of premium stuff something where to give in, it snaped over to an backbow.
    That took me an week to sort out and as for know the neck is relifed as much as it gets and in steps I am to tighten it.
    Not the first Indonesian made that came in that way and it may work in some parts of the world but not around here where the weather conditions are like riding a Roller coaster.
    But in overall a very well crafted guitar maybe the best one in the span 100-700 dollar, lot of premium tutch to it.
    I also got a Yamaha Pacifica 012 that put me in the direction of Yamaha. Also a very well made guitar for its low price.

      Yeah, I really like this one once I got it set up. I can see why the original buyer returned it if he didn’t know how to make truss rod and bridge adjustments. Overall an amazing instrument for the price.

    Thank you for your video.

    Do you think this guitar could work? Thank you

      I initially commented with a different reply because I thought this was on a different video. Yamaha are 100% gigable guitars. I think humbuckers are the safest bet for live performances because you never know what kind of environment you’re going to be playing in. as I said in the other comment, the reality is with an EQ pedal you can get nearly any tone you’re looking for from nearly any guitar. It’s just a matter of finding something you connect with.

      Lots of people order things online just to try them and then return them.
      That’s why some stores now charge for returns.
