Here's a question from one of our viewers who suggested that my interpretation of balloon wall framing was creating problems with terms used currently and in the past. Watch the video and let us know what you think in the comment area. Are there different terms used by construction workers all over the world that make it difficult to know for sure if they should still be used today.
I am familiar with this, and have done many additions on old bollon framed homes. I am actually on one right now where i converted an attic by blowing out the roof for a long dormer. Every tem you mentioned is exactly what im used to calling them. Great vid.
Awesome and sometimes construction terminology can be confusing.
I worked on one balloon framed house, like old one. The studs were continuous from the foundation up to the second story. As an electrician, this was awesome, as fishing wire was easy, especially once the homeowner declared the lath and plaster a loss (there was no saving it). Removed a lot of knob and tube from that house. I'm in knoxville tennessee so that was Probably first built in the early 1900s or possibly up until the 30s from what i i know of the neighborhood. What's really neat is you could tell the house had been done in four stages, all still old real 2x4 with incredible growth rings. From a fire point of view though, EEEK!! I told the guy to add fire blocking lol but who knows if he did. I'm just a sparky, what do I know lol
Thanks for the great story.
the second method you showed was used up to 1963 when the the building boom picked up and large naborhood development became and the creation of Bulk built Spec homes came about a big thing in the USA and Canada but this was the most common method was the most common method 1963 and was very common in the catalog homes
Thank you for the explanation.
You are welcome!
Ready to build.
Exactly!!!
In repairing a sill plate in the basement and a damagef ribbon on the 1st floor how would you go about changing the 1st floor studs/floor system to platform framing instead of going straight to foundation wall?
Hey Greg I've learned a lot from your vids. Thanks! I'm considering balloon framing (properly fire blocked) in my house build - 12:12 roof sitting on a 3 or 4 foot wall upstairs, that is part of continuous 2x6 would be stronger than a 3 or 4 foot platform wall on top of the upstairs floor, no?
I do have examples of that in one of my garage framing playlists.
You say tomato (tomayto) and I say tomato (tomahto) ....
I totally agree that a variety of terms exist for the same thing!
Yes, Tomatto, toeh-mah-toe, tuh-mey-toh, toma-to, to-may-toe :)

Glad you like it and thanks again.
